Hi I'm in the market for a charger. I let the smoke out of my 959. Don't know what happened but some of the traces on the bottom of the main board were open. So I'm a bit wary of the MRC line. I also heard one non-specific comment that said that the 989 got some bad reviews. That said, this looks like one heck of a charger from a feature stand point. I'd like to get an overall impression of it.

I run a brushless boat on 12-14 cells nmh. (2x6 or 2x7) I may go Lipo someday but not in the near future.

Does this charger use the same peak technology as the 959? Can someone explain it briefly. I know the 959 says it has "micro peak technology" but it doesn't say what that is. I'm guessing since this is a higher end charger it will have a more detailed explanation in the manual but by then I'll have already bought it.

Just trying to make an informed decision.

Thanks.

Maybe Tim can explain the "micro-peak" tech. I can say the 989 is "better" smoother than my 959. It may or may not employ the patented micropeak. I can't find the patent right now, but it explains it quite a bit.

It is very adjustable and one of my favorite things about it is the power supply.

Sorry for the delay, I was away at a trade show until today. The “Micro-Peak” is just the circuitry/program we use to determine the peak of a battery. Yes, the 989 is the higher end charger, and it does have a higher resolution than the 959/960. So the output amperage and the peak determination is more accurate. It does have some really good features too. You can still send in the 959 to be fixed if you want, that way you have a back up. Let me know if you have any specific questions on the 989.

Hi Tim, I have a MRC 989 on order and have a quick question. I noticed that most full function chargers have a programable "total charge time" feature that is a safety for missed peak detections. Is there a similar feature built into the 989 software or is the temperature probe the only safety? Thanks, SOS.

No, there is no programmable time cut-off built into the 989. It uses either the peak detection or the temp probe.
