Hi Tony,

Great craftsmanship, I look forward to buying one when available.

Any news in the project?

Doug

tony-howard -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (5/5/2008 10:21:44 PM)

The new top plug has been painted and the new bottom plug is ready to be painted as soon as a couple of parting flanges have been added. Next are the molds themselves.

Any news or pictures?

ProScaleRc -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (6/28/2008 11:27:26 AM)

Tony or Leo or anyone who knows,

What is the best muffler to use that will fit inside your cowls? I'll be running a DA50, but I'm not interested in using a Keleo scale muffler as it is far from true scale. I'd prefer a muffler that fits in the cowl and discreetly drops out the bottom.

Cheers,

James

tony-howard -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (6/29/2008 4:11:26 AM)

Sdougm - I apologize that I missed your post last week. No news to post yet, but I'm very close. Sorry.

ProScaleRc - I think there are some threads here on RCU with information about your engine and within the cowl mufflers. It appears to me the critical dimension is usually the muffler width. Since my cowl is the same width as the fuselage at the firewall, if the muffler stays within the fuselage sides, it will be OK.

(My cowl is a 1/4 deeper than the OEM cowl in the lower half and is slightly fuller at the bottom, so there is slightly more width down near the bottom of the firewall. But that extra volume is probably too deep to help with the muffler body clearance.

Closer, but nothing yet.

dvs1 -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (8/31/2008 2:22:57 AM)

Tony,
I know your a busy man but was curious how the progress goes. I'm in the progress of fiberglassing my mustang
and would sure like your cowl to help with the finishing touches.

Thanks,
Curt

tony-howard -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (9/2/2008 3:25:24 AM)

I pulled the new molds off the plugs this weekend and they are fine.

Next step is to layup a cowl and check the spinner alignment.

GSNut -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (10/12/2008 9:57:04 PM)

Tony...

Have been following along

Please add me to the list, for a complete cowl, exhaust and vent kit when your ready !

My TF Mustang GS P51 has been sitting here since I did the raise the nose modification several years ago.
So not a big problem waiting a bit longer, but will brush the dust off and get it ready to mount the G62 !

Cheers

GSNUT

tony-howard -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (10/14/2008 6:23:54 PM)

GSNUT, you may be the only one still waiting!

A second small correction to the cowl turned out to be needed since my last post. As of this morning the repainted portion of the plugs need to be polished and waxed before new molds are started.

Most of the other details are set. The instructions along with associated pictures and drawings need to be finished.

With a scale display spinner the cowl really looks good.

Hi Tony!
Any new pictures???

Doug

ChuckECM -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (10/14/2008 7:22:59 PM)

Hey Tony,

I'm still looking to get the whole p-51 Howard upgrade package, once the cowl is finished![:D]

Thanks for the come back Tony !!

I can appreciate all the time and effort that you a putting into this project and most of the time it's not for the profit but for the satisfaction of a job well and proudly done. The customer does not realize all the blood, sweat and tears that are rendered before it is all completed to ones own satisfaction.

My P-51 has been waiting for a long time now but finaly have found the missing parts that TF just couldn't come up with and you did ! I watched Byron Godberson of Byron's Orginals walk up and down the line and discard many of the parts and pieces that came off the design and mfg. line. A small blemish such as a tiny air bubble in a fiberglass fuse on a Corsair or P-51 was enough to send it to the trash bin..

Personnal Pride and a sense of acomplishment is what makes this Country and Hobby Great !

I took my latest sport aircraft design to the field today along with my newly built Tx tray for their maidens..
Well to make this a shorter story will say that I have an order for 24 Tx Trays and no less than 11 raves on the aircraft.... WOW is about all I can say.. Guess am feeling great about all the nice words still floating about in my head.

The aircraft is just a fun and great flying sport aircraft will do most anyting you want .... I call it the
Mystic 90, with a 72 inch wing and a .90 two stroke for go ! Took one click up elev. trim right from the paper to the air............... aawwhh how sweet it is...... now is the time to fine line the plans !

So Tony I will gladly wait for the final release of the Cowl and all. Thanks Again...

Cheers and Goodwill !

Flakbait -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (10/15/2008 3:02:37 PM)

I'm still waiting too............... [:D]

Keep it up Tony, It looks like it will do the ol' TF Mustang justice.
I have mine on hold waiting for the parts you are working on..........

tony-howard -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (10/15/2008 7:15:24 PM)

As requested, here's a couple of pictures of a cut away cowl with the engine installed. This was an earlier cowl that I sliced up to trace the as-built profile for my CAD drawings. However, the only changes that have been made have been done to the spinner face ... the cowl contours are unchanged. So it's an accurate contour.

This cowl was joined outside the mold since the molds were not yet seasoned. So there is some filling done on the seam.

Just as a reminder, the reason that the cowl goes clear back over the leading edge of the wing is to fair the cowl bulges properly at the top and to fair the lower cowl correctly back to the wing. Over 1/4" had to be added to the lower corners at the firewall to make it blend properly. It's only at the bulkhead ahead of the wing that it matches the fuselage.

Edit: added picture showing the forward part of the cowl bulges that accomodate the Merlin valve covers.

geh3 -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (11/2/2008 3:47:59 PM)

I'm currently building one of these and will use the Wren44 turbprop! I'm changing the airframe to resemble the "Stiletto/StilettoII" Pylon Racer style with the removed radiator and skinny canopy... should be a HOOT! It will be a sport scale type!

I might be able to use one of these cowls as well...

Taildragger -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (11/8/2008 12:05:09 PM)

Tony, I just recieved my ARC. Please let me know as soon as your cowl is available. This mod will set my tang apart from the rest around here. Thanks, Bill

The Swede -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (11/8/2008 2:13:38 PM)

Hi Tony.

Just found this little thread. Progress on my bird is going well and I have made most of the modyfied servo installations using Walt Dimick's RDS system. Was a bit tricky, especially the flaps but all is working well. Even used the RDS on the rudder... And, yepp, still waiting impatiently for your beautiful cowl with accessories... But, hey, no stress mate! I'd rather have an item that I know has been thoroughly made than a hasty knock-together piece of plastic that I wouldn't be happier with than the TF stock cowl...
And also... the price... Saw a few complaints early in this thread... Well, look at it this way: a Mercedes will always cost more than a Skoda... If you want good appearance and quality you'll have to cough up the dosh! Keep up the good work pal, I'm still on the waiting list.

Taildragger -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (11/8/2008 4:36:36 PM)

What is this RDS system? Never heard of it. Bill

The Swede -> RE: Improving the TF GS Mustang Cowl (11/8/2008 10:05:47 PM)

Hi Bill.

RDS stands for Rotary Drive System. It makes it possible to make 100% concealed drive systems on moving surfaces like ailerons, flaps and rudder. Nothing hanging out or visible, gives the model an even more scale appearance. No push rods, clevises or horns, also giving less drag. Check out this web-site for more thorough information. I can really recommend this!! :http://www.irfmachineworks.com
The good news is that it's simple, reliable and you don't have to remortgage your house to buy the components...
I am using it on rudder as well on my TF GS Mustang. As I am making an electric conversion with heavy LiPo's in the nose, a few extra gramms of servo in the tail isn't disasterous... Using Hitec programmable, digital servos all over.

Benny
