I just recently moved to hawaii and was searching around for a good feild to fly at since I am not AMA(I know, I know I will be soon). Found a great feild. Huge and never seems to be any people there. Being that I'm in hawaii, the feild is up in the mountains, inbetween two deep valleys spaced about 5 miles apart. The first day I flew it was pretty windy so I only flew for a couple minutes and called it a day. The second day seemed to be great. Not very much wind (on the ground anyway). Good take off, got up to about 250 feet, made a couple passes, then all of a sudden the pt-40 flipped around like crazy. I recovered and leveled out. Scared poopless...lol..I quickly landed with NO problem. I check over the whole plane again and went through my normal pre-flight checks including a range check with the antenna down at about 100 feet. NO PROBLEMS. So I decided to fly again and figure out the problem. Figured at about 250 to 300 feet I could recover from anything. Well same great take off and made another couple passes when the plane AGAIN barrell rolled and looped and flipped violently. The more I think about it, there is no way I could repeat that on my own, not enough throw. So I recovered and it happend again but this time the wings folded and now my avistar is an avi-bomb! heading for a group of houses! I killed the engine and hoped for the best(not to kill anyone!!!!) I found my plane planted into some ladies roof like a dart. Killed the engine, gas tank, receiver, 2 servos. Totaled!!! Wings slowly flipped to the ground. Could this have been swirling wind high above(say around 250 feet) =====@@@@@======<-swirling wind!...lol
lessons learned:
1. GET AMA and fly at FLYING FEILDS, not parks!!!!!!
2. LOTS of PADDING on your electronics!
3. Stay away from houses and people, I could have killed someone!

anytime you have moutains in the area expect turbulance.

this goes for trees, houses, whatever.

at our field if you watch the planes you can see the layer of tubulance that comes off the tree tops... the plane will be flying find in the wind... then when it gets to about tree top level it will rock be buffeted... then after it clears that its calm by the ground.

also you are right about the AMA/flying field bit. it might not seem much but a .40 size plane can kill someone easy. this is a dangerous hobby and should be treated as such.

I fly in wind constantly and have only had a plane buffed around never rolling or looping it.
I would check to see how near a regular flying field is. It sounds more like you are getting hit by another trans signal after you get up to where the other radio waves are traveling almost on the other side of the hills from where you are flying and the valley you are flying in is protecting you from them signals until you get up there.
I would suggest for one get some AMA coverage and also contact any local flying clubs and try to fly where there is some sort of frequency control.
just my 2 cents

By the way what is/was your plane you said PT-40 and Avistar?

There is a military base right next to that feild. Maybe that could be it. My plane WAS an avistar. I thought pt-40 was a generic term for that style of plane. Maybe I'm wrong. I am did find an AMA feild to fly at. I am going to get my AMA before i fly again so I can fly there.

I also have a H9- .60 p-51, WM P-51, and an H9 Easyfly 40. I used the avistar to try out the feild, good thing huh.

Turbulence like this is far more powerful than you realize, we fly right next to a 400 foot cliff and when the wind comes over it and the sharp edge we have rotors that travel down the field, one point can be still, one have 20 mph wind one way, the next bit 20mph down flow, then 20 mph the other way, then 20mph upwards. this gets very interesting in landing and prophang as the rotor flows down the field.
you can normally punch through and get high in the smoother air which is very buoyant, but landing is a nightmare. I've had my shrike sucked from the ground and blown at me by such rotors.
it's possible you got hit, but the wind is more likely. at least you've found somewhere to try Dynamic Slope soaring
Composite gliders can explode at speeds above 150mph as they hit the shear layers in these areas
