Hi Tim et-al

I am trying to test my Nicd’s and I am having some problems . First of all my batteries are old 3 to 4 years old but I have not had had any issues (yet). I use a KO-PROPO BX-212, yes I know its 6 months older than dirt, but it works. For the most part my batteries are 6 volt 1800 mAh. I have 1 4.8 1800 mAh battery for ignition.

Here is my problem I cannot seem to get more that 500 to 600 mAh after charging/discharging 4 to 5 cycles. Again, I realize the batteries are old but I do test after each flight with an ESV meter with .5 amp load and they hold up. BTW I ordered new batteries just in case. Admittedly with the KO-PROPO I only add 450 to 600 mAh when I charge. My flying sessions are 2 to three times a week with 10-15 minute flights. No 3D just cruising. The planes are G62 types and 25 lbs planes.

I also have a similar problem with the 4.8 volt battery it only cycles up and indicates 600~ mAh on cycling, different profile. The 4.8 is 2 mos. old.

Here are my settings: for the 6 volt batteries.

Settings for SuperBrain

Profile 8
NICD Charge-mode
5 cell
1800 mAh
1.00 amp Charge rate

NICD Discharge-mode
5 cell
1800 MAh
1.20 amp Discharge rate
cutoff peak V 6 and/or 7
cutoff V 1.20
Cutoff temp 140

Trickle
Amp 0.20
Time 5.00
CYC 4

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated did not mean to go on so long.

Thanks

John

I think you are operating on the top half of the battery (batt is getting full, but not empty) Sometimes it's hard to telll if it's the top half or the bottom half.

The displayed capacity will be higher if the cut-off voltage is dropped to .9 volts per cell. I'm not a real big fan of "cycling" and perhaps you can do a nice slow c/10 charge for 15 hrs to make sure it's full and then do a manual discharge while checking the capacity. Discharge down to .8-1 volt per cell.

It's also possible to have a bad/weak cell or cells that are way out of balance causing this.

Thanks for the information. I dropped the charge and discharge rates down and the capacity increased. I will drop the cutoff voltage on the next test. At least the 4.8 volt 1800 mAh came up. I will try the 6 volt batteries next.

Sorry for the delay in my reply, I was away at a trade shopw and just got back to work today. Guver is right, try dropping the cut off to either 0.9 volts or 1.0 volts. Also the lower rates will help also. Cycling the battery once or twice slowly will help alleviate any "memory" effect that might build up over time in the NiCds. Also, if you had batteries sit for a long period of time, cycling sometimes helps bring these back. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Tim, et al

A couple of question (maybe) I have 4 new NICD 6V 2400 mHa batteries and I am try to form them. I have made 2 observations the timer max display is 999 minutes during the auto cycle (charge) the timer exceed 999 it cycled to zero then counted the seconds until it reach 60 but did not carryover to minutes. It continued until it finished the charge. Next when I started the second battery the charger would not start discharge (it always started charging) until I unplugged the charger and re-started. The auto cycle was selected. Are there any special instructions for the larger capacity batteries?

The discharge was set to 1 amp and the charge was set to 300 mAh (nothing between 20 and 30). The first time I got 2500 mAh which I thought was excellent on the second cycle I got 1500 mAh. Cut off peak mV was set to 6; cut off V was set to 1. I have since set the discharge to 600 mAh to see what happens.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong or if my settings are incorrect, I am currently checking battery number 3.

Thanks

John

I'm not quite sure about the timer, I've never actually watched it roll over. I can ask my engineer and get back to you on that one. I would 0.8 amps for the charge and discharge and see how it works. Also, set the cut-off for 0.9 volts.

Hi Tim, well things are finally working I used the settings you suggested and set the cut off peak to 7. I hope that is not too high. Since I got it working I did not want to change things. I am now trying one of my old batteries to see what happens.

Have you check on the timer issue I mentioned in the last post?

Also, is it the batteries make-up that makes the settings somewhat difficult to dial in? And, it would be nice to have a little better manual for those of us that are not as versed in battery architecture as others. Just some thoughts!

Thanks for the help.

John M.

Every battery is a different from the next. Even if you have 2 batteries of equal rating, they're still different from each other. Each battery has it own peak voltage, internal resistance, charge rate, discharge rate, etc...Also with new batteries it may take a couple of cycles to get the full capacity and peak voltage out of them.
The timer should go to the 199 minutes and then roll over. The problem is, there is a limited amount of space on a LCD screen, so I think that this is all we could fit. With the manual, there is always a battle of too much information can be confusing, but too little and well, you know. We’re currently working on either a revised manual or a FAQ page for it. Either way I’ll post to let everyone know.

Please include the stop codes if possible. I have a few and they seem to be from c.0. to maybe c.8.? Maybe you could post them here if they're not a secret.

Sorry guys, I was out for a few days. I'll try to get them all written down from my engineer and post them.
