Hey all.

I test flew my 52" fusion this morning and it flew great, zero trim required. But on the third pass I opened up the YS63 and within a couple seconds both wings fluttered bad. I lost the right aileron servo but was able to coach her in. I have Hitec 325 Karbonite servos in the wings which is what I run on most of the 40 size profiles. There is minimal gap (almost none) between ail and wing. Not sure what happened. Maybe it needs some metal geared servos? On my fusion90 with YS 1.10, it hasnt shown even a hint of flutter. Maybe I just need to beef it up some on servos.

One thing you might check. When I put mine together the doubler came loose around one of the aile servos. This left only the sheeting holding the servo in place. I do not think the MG servo is the problem. The MG might save the servo under a flutter condition but shold not cause the problem.

Thanks I will check for that. I hope I can find what caused it, it isnt that many times a plane survives a violent flutter, I got lucky.

My favorite quote from the plans on an old Yoshioka (Japan) kit:

"Wiggly of wing make day not happy to fly!!"

Zman...what exactly fluttered here? The wing or the ailerons? The kit Fusion uses basswood rails interlocked with the ribs to form the servo rails. Not much chance they'd come loose. I have no idea how they have the servo mounting arranged in the ARF version, but as others have said...I'd take a close look there.

As for the wing, unless the guide pin holes in the wing root were all hogged out...I'm not sure how you'd have a problem.

RC,
It was actually both wings that fluttered, looked like a bird for a second! I replaced the servos and checked things over again. Not sure what else to do except try it.

Z,

Never do full speed pasess with the Fusions or pretty much any profile for that matter. Given the pwer to weight of the setups we have now more than likely the tails are prone to flutter. I've seen this on just about every profile out there alll brands. There are some that have been designed with stronger tails such as the new Edge V3 profile for more durabiity but of course more structure means more weight. Anyway I'm not sure what caused the initial flutter on the wings but flutter is very bad news as we all know and it is imparative you double check all glue joints in the wings before you fly again. As David mentions check the servo mounts and make sure they are solid. Check the wing tube sockets now and make sure nothing vibrated loose. Drip thin CA down through the root opening onto various joints if you are not sure. Say like the wing tube mounts in the ribs and the joints between the wing tube sockets and the shear webs (must be glued). Also maybe check all the hinges and make sure they are all tight. DO a pull test on the ailerons and make sure nothing came loose. When you have it all back together check the servo play and linkages. With the radio on see how much you can move the aileron up and down. You should little to no play. That's about all I can think of right now.
