VintageMA -> Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 2:55 AM)

I've owned and spent a ton of $$$ on a RC18MT, Losi mLST, and Losi Mini-t Pro and have to say having just bought and put together a XRAY M18T, that it is THE BEST, HIGHEST QUALITY mini car I've bought to date.

I have probably put and extra $300 in each of the cars before the xray car to make the car stable and driveble on a 2S Lipo/Brushless motor system. The RC18MT was downgraded to a RC18T with on road tire, a lot of aluminum, tons of upgrades on the suspension and chassis, and the inevitable steering slop issues inherent to that car. The Losi Mini-T - which was (and still is) a nice little car - but on a 2S/BL system all is wants to do it back flip most of the time. The mLST which was just a disaster - viscous diffs, new suspension, lots of steering type upgrades - and eventually giving up because it is just a car with too high of a CG that it will just bounce all over the place with any speed given to it.

Soooo..... having read tons on how good xray was - I took all of the best electronics from the above 1/18's and purchased a kit for the M18T.

The build is as follows:
M18T kit - totally stock except for all option nickel coated pivot balls.
Custom painted body - nothing fancy, just blue pearl metallica spray paint.
Receiver - Novak XXtra sysnthesized FM
Servo - XRAY XMS01MG Micro Servo
ESC - Mamba 25
Motor - Lehner (LMT) 1015/12 (6667 rpm / volt)
Battery - Apogee 2S 2200mAh LiPo
Gearing - 14 pinion / 54 stock spur (geared for about 30 - 35mph and based on passing traffic it was about right on mark)

It took about 5 hours to complete the entire build, plus a few more hours tweaking the build just driving it around indoors on the steering and suspension and tweaking the Mamba25 on the computer with the CastleLink.

Just got to take it outdoors today to a nearby parking lot, and I have to share the this little truck is amazing. The steering and suspension are right on. Zero slop in the steering yet the servo saver totally compensates for any bad bumps. The tracking is straight on and except for trying to turn at almost full speed I wasn't able to get a traction roll even if I tried.

This little buggy is solid - it probably flipped about 10 times and lanedd upright on every flip except for one.

I have the aluminum CVD's on the way, but with the way this littel guy performed today I don't know if I will even install then until I have a breakage with the plastic ones - more weight = less power.

I guess I am just hoping that someone trying to figure out which truck to get reads this and saves themselves the expense of getting the wrong truck and dumping tons of $$$ into just to get it driveable.

I already had all of the parts because of my past purchases - but if I could return all of the cr*p I have bought over the past 1 1/2 years and recover the wasted $$$ I would so go with my setup above with no question.

The Mini-T is 2WD so that is just a characteristic of all 2WD cars. I'm thinking about getting one of these for racing and doing speed runs... how durable are these?

-Inverted- -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 3:28 AM)

Throw a graphite chassis on that bad boy!

VintageMA -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 3:36 AM)

re: the Mini-T - in regards to the 2WD, I do understand that and I actually still have the mini-T. I really like this little car, but just not enough control in general when you put a lot of power into it.

When you ask about durable are you referring to the mini-t or the xray?

hard to speak on the long term reliability of the x-ray because it's very new, but seems like one hell of a durable car.

the mini-t pro - I have beat the hell out of the poor little car running it at times with a TP 2000mAh 3s lipo on a mamba 6800 pack. The only parts I have broken/repaired are - aluminum steering blocks front and aluminum blocks rear, upgraded the ball diff to MIP. If you have the electronics I would say definitely get the pro version and not the rtr one. The shocks on the pro version are TiNi coated and are so silky smooth it's amazing - just put slightly harder springs on them than stock.

.....only had the car for week or so now..... give me a chance to break a few parts [;)][:D]

Frozen72 -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 3:40 AM)

I was asking about the X-ray my friend has a 800 powered Mini-T and it's a handful to drive.

VintageMA -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 3:54 AM)

Frozen072 - check out some of the vids on youtube, they are pretty impressive the beating they take. Out of the box I am very impressed with the build of the xray - I gave it a couple of pretty big mutliple cartwheels on ashpalts that would've definetely popped ball cups on the other cars and this thing didn't skip a beat.

I had the car on some dutsy dirt and there was a little conern about the open pinion/spur setup being open to the dust spraying up - I did get a little piece of dirst in the spur a few times - but they all cleared themselves without me having to dig them out with a blade.

I will eventually put one of my 3S in and then we'll see what it's really made of - but I think anything 1/18 on 3S is asking for major repairs.

Its an Xray, of course your gonna love it!

texaschilidog -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 4:21 AM)

It looks real meann!!

Mini_Me -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 4:39 AM)

Glad you like it. :)

rschoi_75 -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 5:13 AM)

nice ride.

btw, where'd you get the lehner?

VintageMA -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 3:15 PM)

Thx - I got the Lehner from Chris Fine over at FDM.

http://www.finedesignrc.com/cars-trucks-motors.asp

The motor was back-ordered so it took about 6-8 weeks to actually get it. It also has a 1/8 shaft, so it uses standard 1/10 scale 48 pitch pinions as well.

I love LMT, their motors are so well built and powerful. You can see the difference if you hold a mamba and LMT side-by-side right away. At $150 it is a bit pricey, but if it lasts as long as 2 or 3 mamba 6800 motors I'll be happy.

rschoi_75 -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 6:57 PM)

dude, I've been trying to get a lehner from Chris for so long... I guess its time to email him again. Thanks for the info.

VintageMA -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 7:18 PM)

Yeah, Chris can sometimes be a bit annoying to deal with. You have to be "gently persistent" if that makes any sense.

rschoi_75 -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/30/2007 7:26 PM)

lol.... I'll try my jedi mind skills on him...

Outrageousmagic -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/31/2007 3:39 AM)

Where did your buy the Xray M18T?

Also which of the Lehner motors did you get? is there one there that will work with the MQ?

VintageMA -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/31/2007 2:38 PM)

I got the m18t from amainhobbies - I've been ordering from them for about 1 1/2 years and found their promptness with shipping and customer service to be really great.

I had gotten the LMT 1015/12 (kv=6667) when I was trying to get a motor to power the mLST because it's a very heavy truck and the mamba 5400 and 6800 kept heating up too much with all of the weight regardless of gearing.

I have never had nor seen a MQ in person so I can't speak for the right motor for it - you might want to search around here for some other threads that go into the best motors for that car (if it less that 1.5lbs the LMT above should be plenty powerful for it).

I would like to try a quark33 esc, but I can't justify the money since the Mamba25 esc is still working fine (and I just love using the Castle Link to tweak out the programming from the PC) [:D]

Outrageousmagic -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/31/2007 5:34 PM)

The MQ is about 1.6Ibs (though mine might be a bit heavier....full size servo and such)
The permax is suggested for the MQ and the GH3600 or GH4700 motors....

I like the idea that the Lehner motors last that much longer than regular motors.

VintageMA -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/31/2007 6:17 PM)

I think the Permax is a 400 size motor, no? The mamba is onyl a 280 motor, so too much weight in a vehicle is going to really make it work and heat up. You could probably try either one.

I would definitely take pause at putting sub-c sized batteries in a car that size - way too much weight, you would be adding almost a full pound to the weight of the car. Go for a 6 or 7 cell IB1400 pack. Or, if you haven't already, take the plunge into lipo's and get a decent quality pack that will fit the car. Go for a good quality 20C or higher rated 2S lipo with a ~2000mAh rating and you'll be all set to put out the amps the permax will want. Quality brands are Thunderpower, Kokam (Team Orion brand uses the Kokam cells), FlightPower have been rated as the best (but come with a corresponding $$$ price tag and can be rated up to 25C or 30C constant).

Foxy -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (7/31/2007 7:29 PM)

Out of my 7 cars, it's the only electric I own. I love it too. [:D] They are extremely durable and surprisingly stable at silly speeds.

DarkHorse -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (10/7/2007 1:05 AM)

Any more M18T's out there?[8D]

Just built mine and ran a couple of packs today :).
btw I'm new to RC cars so any tips welcome.

X-Ray M18T 1/18 scale kit only.
Himax 2015 2800rpm/v (6-12A), (totally wrong motor temporarily)
Phoenix 10
54T/23T
3xTP910 prolite packs.
JP cheap servo
RTR weight 496g [;)]

Takes off in a shot but doesn't wheelie, in about 20ft from zero it tops out about +35mph (performance like a 1:10 ThunderTiger TS4N flat out), plenty fast enough for my needs. Little brushless motor gets fairly warm to quite hot if blazing a dozen full throttle runs and using hard break stop turn arounds on the old P10 ESC (with all the standard settings). Averaging 4A, 10A peaks with a top speed of maybe 35 to 40 mph.

Rollout and top speed calculator. It's a useful 'best case' estimator that takes no
account for running weight, setup Amp draw or cell performance etc.
Eg. Xray M18T numbers:
Tire Diameter : 2.75 inches (70mm)
Pinion Size: 23T
Spur Size: 54T
Internal Ratio: 2.5 (diffs)
Battery Voltage: 11.1v (nominal loaded)
Motor Kv:2800 (rpm/v)

Results (not accounting for efficiency and other loss factors):
Rollout: ~1.472"
Speed: ~43.32mph

Mini_Me -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (10/7/2007 1:12 AM)

Mine currently is on hiatus with identity issues. It wants to become a buggy. :)

rschoi_75 -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (10/7/2007 2:06 AM)

lol... still working on the conversion huh?... Are you still planning on the jconcepts body?

This WAS my m18t... or "b" rather.
I just sold it off two weeks ago in order to fund a 1/8th scale project. I loved it, and I already miss it.... luckily I've got an M18T BG4 as well, so I guess I don't feel too bad... [;)]

Mini_Me -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (10/7/2007 7:20 AM)

Yep, thats the body I got. Though I found some things out that may or may not delay my project.

DarkHorse -> RE: Just sharing - M18T - best 1/18 car I've ever bought!!! (10/7/2007 9:40 AM)

[8D] A couple of knowledgeable posters :), I've read quite a few of your m18t information posts on here and other forums that helped me a lot, thanks for your efforts.

But I must have missed a few things...
What's best for the stock shocks, the springs seem a little weak and the shocks leak?
EDIT: ah found that bit 'Spring set for NT18T'

This buggy rash you lot are suffering, is it just for looks or does running a larger wing help handling?
Any links to post for info on the wing mods?

Although my build has turned out 50g heavier than I had planned, going to try to keep this car light benefiting from the composite parts, resist the aluminium upgrades where possible and not over power it to avoid running into gear life problems. Plus a lighter car should accelerate quicker, use less power and damage less on impacts (carrying less energy).
