I've only been in gas engines a little less that two years and since then I have bought right many Hitec metal gear servos. At first, I had trouble with the screws that hold the arms (metal) backing out but I solved that by using Loctite. My problem now is, how do you get the screws out after Loctite? I have several servos (5645 mg) that I was trying to use in a new plane but couldn't get the darned screws out!

Is there someplace you can send these (relatively new) servos to have the arms removed?

If Red Loctite has been used, then only way to break the compound is the use of heat which will damage your servo. In this instance, use a drill bit the same diameter, or a fraction larger, as the shaft of the screw and drill out center of the screw head which will detach so arm can be removed. Remove case top and output gear. Heat gear evenly, preferably in an oven. Pliers may then be used to unscrew remainder of screw. Check there has been no distortion before refitting gear or replace gear set. MG servos are provided with a little star washer which, if used and tightened correctly, should prevent screws from backing out. However, all star/split washers should be replaced regularily as, if removed and tightened repeatedly, they flatten and loose grip. In need, suggest only Blue loctite be used for modelling purposes, refer How can I remove Loctite Threadlockers? be used in future, preferably Liquid Thread Lock, after noting the clear warning "Do Not use this on plastic, as it will melt the plastic!"

Yeah if it's red LocTite, you've got a problem...

Alan gave you the answer for that, but I'd suggest going a bit further so you don't repeat the problem.

1. Get rid of the factory screws and replace them with socket heads. I can't figure out why they don't provide the high performance servos with them anyway.

2. If you still have problems with those getting loose even with new star washers, use only a removable type thread locker and VERY sparingly.

3. If you don't replace the screws, and it's probably a worthwhile purchase anyway, get yourself a set of JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screw drivers for them. Those screws in the servos look like Phillips heads, but they're actually JIS and when you try the fit of a JIS in the screws vs. a Phillips you can immediately tell the difference.

Good luck...

Thanks, Alan and Zeeb.

I used blue Loctite but obviously too much of it. I'm going to look for some socket head screws for these servos...do you have a suggestion where I might find?

One servo had a molded plastic arm and I was able to cut away the arm with a Dremel and then got the screw out. Another one has a metal arm and the screw is rounded out. I think I will try filing this one down until I get the arm off then I can deal with the screw. Two others with metal arms I was able to get out after much difficulty.

Thanks again for you response, you've been a big help to me.

Here's the one I've been using;

http://www.microfasteners.com/

There are others like McMaster Carr and some I've seen but can't remember the names and don't have links for them, but the Micro Fasteners folks have been good to deal with for me.

Here at the shop I have had pretty good luck with using the tip of the soldering iron to heat up the screw enough to break it loose from the loctite. On occasion I have had to use a pair of wire cutters to grab the head of the screw and break it loose.

Might I suggest hot glue? Totally reversible.

Thanks, all, for your responces/help.

I was able to file the screw head off the second stuck servo. I ordered new socket-head screws from Airwild and I really like them better. Hopefully, I will not make the same mistake of using too much Loctite again.
