Hello,
I have just graduated highschool and im looking at joing the US military after i go though college. (not decided on branch but probably the USAF) I was wondering what i should be doing to try and ensure that I am considered for flight training. Im 16 and have been training for my ppl for 3 years now because of age restrictions but should be taking my practicle on my 17th birthday. Should I continue on and train for my instrument and commercial during my gap year and through college? Will joining the Civial Air Patrol wing here help with my chances? Is there anything else I should be thinking about doing? There is at least 5 years before I join up because of completeing my degree and taking this gap year.
Thanks for your comments

Yes, don't get caught for DUI either drugs of alcohol and don't get into trouble that will give you a record. Don't get any tattoos. Nrom

flying can't hurt but the service will send you through their school anyway. ROTC good CAP, Well?

The Airforce is real picky these days due to reduction of force. Most important is good grades. Not, apparently common sense or actual intelligence) It's very hard to get flight training without being from the academy or being the top of your class with ROTC. My son just transfered to the Army because it's easier to get flight training there. Your civilian ratings won't help you much if at all, my son got his Private ticket at 17 as well and he thinks it might have hindered him. Also be prepared to use the politics of the Airforce to get ahead.
Norm is right, keep your record spotless or you won't get far.
Good luck,
Brad

I also suggest that you stay away from any apparent body piercing. Army easiest to get flight training but you had better like helicopters, Coast guard also has flight division but they may get their pilots from the Navy as does the Marines. Norm

Hm, this is all interesting. I'm also 16 and plan on going to Texas A&M on a Navy ROTC scholarship then becoming a fighter pilot for the Navy. My dad is in the Army and when he went to flight school he already had many ratings and was a helicopter pilot. It may not have advanced him ahead physically, but it sure helped him with the Army's flight school and he became top of his class because of his prior experience. I am also working on my private and should be taking my practicle on my 17th as well. I've been flying for a while but my dad tells me to get as much experience in different types of flight characteristics as possible to help with flying for the services. Example: I also have my Glider license, I have over 250 hours in various aircraft, and I fly and soon compete in aerobatics. All of this is a sort of tool to help me excell when it comes to learning with the military's flight schools. It also helps to be involved in extracurricular activities like sports, scouts, any clubs, etc. along with having good grades and a clean record. Best of luck!

SLICK

Hi Downingtown! I'm originally from Freedom, near Pittsburgh. As to your question, and as an ex-upper division and graduate level university professor, the FIRST thing you need to do is get some tutoring on your grammar, spelling and punctuation!! Your note is full of errors, and could really hurt you when applying for any posaition, military or otherwise. I'm not trying to be nasty, just want to see you get the best prep you can get. You will definitely need it, if you want to get into the Air Force Academy, which is your best entree to flight training. Incidentally, I'm ex Air Force, from about 62 years ago! Rather than go into details here, send me your email address, to robincom@bellsouth.net, and I'll be happy to give you a hand. Think positive! Lee Robinson W. Palm Beach, FL

I shot my way out of USMMA, Kings Point in 1953. Many of this Academy's have gone into flight training in the USAF and Navy.

Full Academy benefits, but NO COMMITMENT.

Hello N12932,
Heres my 2 cents worth

If it were up to me i would fly sikorsky blackhawk helicopters (way more airframes and stick time to be had than apaches and better maint./flight hr. ratio too)
rotory wing hours of experience count for fixed wing ratings but not the other way around.
The army has way more airframes than the airforce . mostly rotary wing ofcourse but some fixed wing as well.

And remember flying warrant officers fly way more than comissioned. however they almost never get commands and dont make general.

also don't over look the national guard.
good pilots who want to continue to fly but don't want to stay active duty go there.
for example, MN ARNG has at least one pilot with over 15,000 Hrs. WA ARNG has many with over 5,000 Hr. and some with over 10,000.

Like i said,,, just my 2 cents worth.

K.r.

I second 100% of Robinaire's comments. Effective communication is vital. If I had had the opportunity to take flight lessons during my college years, I believe the academics would have suffered.
