AFSalmon -> 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/2/2007 12:55:02 PM)

Folks, we've got notice the next batch of Edge V3 ARFs are being shipped 6 Aug from the factory. Depending on customs, freight, and all that fun I expect to have them here around the 3rd week in Aug and shipping shortly after that. Since the first batch all sold out quickly, we are taking preorders now from the webpage.

Latest news is the planes are in the dock in LA. Next step is customs and trucking to OH. Come on customs!!!!!!!!!

AirTech -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/17/2007 8:34:52 PM)

Which are the main diferences in flying characteristics between the Edge V.3 and the Katana? I am new at 3D flying and will like to start with "3D trainer" rather than a more advance aerobat.

I have a brand new O.S. .70 Ultimate for this project and will like to know if that will be enough engine for the Edge. The specs say it will fly with up to a .80 four stroke engine and I was wondering if I should go with a larger engine. Anyone out there using the O.S. .70 Ultimate or Surpass II on one of these. Lots of power is good, but more power is better.

I also have four (4) Hitecs HS-5245's for the flying surfaces and a HS-81 MG for the throttle. Since all these servos have a smaller footprint than standard servos I will like to know if it will be difficult to mount on the existing servo mounts? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

TailTwister -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/18/2007 10:45:34 PM)

I'll comment on your question.

First, off, the best way to describe the difference is that there is a balance between stability (solid, forgiving, smooth) and aggrressive (agile, responsive, loose). The difference is where the plane sits based on that balance. The Kat is more aggressive, but can be tamed down to be a little less aggressive. The Edge is inherently more stable, and can be tuned up to be a little more aggressive.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (this is all subjective now...) With 1 being rock solid stable (but still 3D) and 10 being a Chinn Yakk (nutz crazy loose and aggressive), I'd put a normally set up Edge at a 4 and a Kat 40 at a 7. You could tune an Edge up to about a 7, but you are not likely to get the Kat back down to a 4.

Does that make sense?

As for engines, the Ultimate 70 is light, but not a powerhouse. It will be OK, but don't expect to it to be a rocket. I'd go an APC 13x4W, or a Pro Zinger 14x4. Some guys like a little more pitch speed, and will recommend a plastic Master Airscrew Scimitar 13x6.

I'm unfamiliar with the servos you mention, but I'd think you could epoxy in a piece of basswood or spruce stick in the servo pocket in one end, and mount them fine. Just be sure you are at 45, or better, ounce inches of torque. Anything better than that will likely be fine.

Tailtwister thank you much for the feedback. Your explanation made a lot of sense. I was inclined towards the Edge before and you have helped me decide on getting one. As I said before I want to learn 3D flying and don’t want a plane that’s too “loose” to start with. I am already on the pre-order list, so I may get one soon

Regarding the engine; do you think the FS .70 Ultimate will be able to hover the Edge? I was thinking a 2 stroke O.S. .55AX or .61FX may be more adequate. Which engine do you recommend?

TailTwister -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/19/2007 1:08:54 PM)

Out of what you listed, the OS 55AX first, OS Surpass 70 second, OS 70 Ultimate third, and don't even consider the OS 61FX.

I think tha 70 Ultimate will hover it, but you won't have much power left. Sometimes when you are first learning, vertical acceleration is what saves your bacon. After a while, you won't be having to launch yourself out of a bad situation, you just fly out. Then the power is less critical.

If I were you right now, the 55 would be what I put in the nose of mine, especially if you already have it.

My personal preference is to run Saitos. You can find a used Saito 72 or 82 every now and then, and those are usually prety good values, if you know who you buy from. There are a few discount places where you can find a decent price on new, but they are not allowed to advertise those prices. You ususlly have to email them and ask.

But again, the Edge V3 and an OS 55 AX would be a killer combo. I'd look at the APC 12.25x3.74 or even APC 13x4W for a prop. 10% nitro might be enough. For a 4 stroke, I like to run 30%.

RaceCity -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/19/2007 6:10:43 PM)

The Edge V3, and the OS 55AX IS a killer combo. Freak power. Absolute throttle control. Low vibration. Low fuel consumption.

Want me to keep going?

That's definitely the way to go with this airplane, and given my choice of any 4C engine out there....I'd opt for the 2C OS 55AX instead.

I like it that much.

Seems like I need to go in the market for a 55AX.............Thanks RaceCity

AFSalmon -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/20/2007 1:35:41 PM)

My Edge V3 now runs an OS 55AX. Very nice combo indeed.

The Toolman -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/22/2007 10:48:07 PM)

My brand new edge V3 has a os.55 ax, running a 13x4 zinger wood prop and it really hovers an flies great. Mine come in at 5 1/4 lbs, an is balanced at 5" back from the LE.

My servos are 4 hitec hs-635hb on the control surfaces and a hitec hs-81mg on the throttle, and a berg 7p rx.

Oh yeah, I forgot, it has brand new round wheels. [:D]

5 1/4 lbs!!! How did you gain so much weight? Mine is 4 lbs 7 oz. Running a TT Pro .46 and 5 cell 900 maH NimH pack.

I have no idea.... The hitec servos are just a tad more weight than futabas. The only thing I can think of is the os 55ax is pretty heavy with that big stock muff on it. Hell, I'm getting ready to gain some more I guess. I am putting the tet landing gear on it today, I'm sure they are heavier than the stockers too. If it isn't in the servos and engine, then it has to be in the wood of the plane.

But it does fly an hover pretty dang good though.

Salmon what is the ETA on the Edge 540 ARFs

I will also like to know........

RaceCity -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/24/2007 4:03:17 AM)

My Edge V3 / OS 55AX combo is 4lbs 8oz with a half tank of fuel. So let's call it "4,6"

Measured with a Rapala digital fishing scale.

AFSalmon -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/24/2007 12:48:23 PM)

Hey we all know fishing scales are dead accurate............aren't they. HAHA

Ok, we talked to the customs broker yesterday and the goods are still in LA awaiting clearance. John talked to him twice yesterday and cleared up some paperwork. More of that today and hopefully the ARFs will clear quickly and get shipped over here to OH next week. So far we are about a week behind our original expectation however at least we know where they are.

RaceCity -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/24/2007 6:20:22 PM)

Salmon....our club's Atomic Molecule Counter was out for calibration, so the only other option was the Rapala. Those are surprisingly accurate BTW. You can check them with a known weight, and they're pretty much right on the money. Not bad for $15.

It's the bathroom scales that lie. That's why the ladies buy them. <GGGG>

tiktock -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/24/2007 8:03:55 PM)

regarding the weight............ i've got the edge kit.... probably version 1? anyway, i've got a saito 91 on it and it weighs about 4lb 10oz, absolutely insane power. i've got a very light battery and a mini servo on the throttle so the overall weight is quite low even with the 91 on it.

this is a video of my edge

Tiktock, and why do you installed that brace between the wheels?

tiktock -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (8/25/2007 9:02:27 AM)

i never got any landing gear with my kit so i made it out of aluminum. the problem with aluminum is that there's no spring in it so i've got a rubber band attached to the bottom of the landing gear.

That's a great idea.

Where are the Edge 540s Salmon, I have been eagerly awaiting the Edge for almost a year, since I saw it at Toledo. Anyways I can't wait for it.

AFSalmon -> RE: 47" Edge V3 New Batch!!! (9/3/2007 2:45:14 PM)

Waiting for a year? Well then you missed the first batch which sold out shortly after Toledo this year. The next batch could be here as quick as end of this week. They have cleared customs and shipping to OH has been arranged.
