Anyone converted their XLS .15 to a remote needle valve, the original is pretty close to the prop

T-bone, the best thing to do is leave it there and do all NV adjusting pre-Margerita ingestion. Fingers and finger nails stay in tact fine....

I did, I cant find the same size and thread that the needle is (like Tony said before). I just left it like it is. It dont look so bad once I mounted it on the bat and put a prop on it. I think its gonna prob break during a mid air or lawn dart landing.
We'll see , I'll have it ready sunday.

Laters... Tbone

I've been smashing the Mag .15s in to things for years. I've never broken off a needle valve, but it's pretty common to have the carb rock back and break out the front of the crankcase, where the carb mounts. You can fix this with JB weld. You can also reduce the chances of it happening by adding a fillet of JB weld around the carb mount area in advance, and rotate the carb, moving the needle back, until the carb touches the crankcase, then it's braced and can't move back as much or as easily. Works for me.

I saw a RNV set up this weekend at our Mile Hi contest on one of Buttercup's rigs. How'd you do it, Bob?

I'm pretty sure Carlos broke his needle valve on his XLS in a mid air or lawn dart landing a month or two ago? Thats when Tony and I were talking about plugging the needle valve threads and adding a remote needle valve. I figured the threads were like 1/4 by 20 or 28 fine threads, but there not!

Oh, I forgot, if you really want a remote, you can probably get a cap that fits from Global Hobbies. I haven't tried it, but Magnum is pretty good about parts fitting between engine sizes. So, you can probably unscrew the needle seat from the carb, screw on a cap, and then screw the needle assembly in to a remote mount.

I think the part you want is the last part on this page:
http://www.hobbypeople.net/part/210627.asp

The carb plug. It says 32-91, but it IS the same part on the .25 and .28, and the .15 looks the same, but I've never tried it, so you're on your own there.

The parts index is here:
http://www.hobbypeople.net/part/partsndx.asp

and you can find the Mag .15 and all it's parts.

Another option (and one that I think some guys are doing) is to cut the needle off the Mag needle and then screw the needle valve all the way in. This turns it in to a plug. Then use an OS remote needle from the .15LA. The OS needles are finer than the Magnum ones. Though the new Mag .15XLS has a much finer needle with broader adjustment. But I don't know if any of the parts are interchangeable there, the carb is a totally new design.

Ah, the threads are almost certainly metric. It is a chinese engine, after all.

How do you guys go about breaking this engine in?

Is a towerpower glow plug Ok to run in this engine?

Generally the best way to break an engine in is to set it a couple of clicks rich and launch it. Put it under a realistic flight load and let the air keep it cool. Oughta work with this one if it works with anything else!

I break in my Mag .15's using the heat cycle method. I use a MAS 7x4 prop as well.

Now, do you have the new Mag with the blue head, or the old Mag? The old one didn't like turning at low rpm with the 8x3 prop, so using the 7x4 allowed the piston/liner to get to the right temp quickly, while still allowing enough oil for the conrod. That's the key.

The problem with just setting the needle rich is that you wear out the piston/conrod fit sooner than you have to. Running the engine in a way that causes the piston and liner to not heat up to normal temp causes them to wear. Then when you do try to get max rpm, it's not there.

On the new Mags, they turn the 8x3 prop just fine, so I don't think it's going to be a big deal, but I still did mine with the 7x4 to let the engine rev with out putting strain on it.

Same here. I have never broken a needle valve assembly on a Magnum.

get the carb plug for the Mag 28, 32, or 36 XL RNV engines. you can get it from Global for only a buck or so, and the shipping on small parts is only $3 or $4. Remove the NVA from the 15 carb (it's either a 7 or 8mm hex, can't recall) and then screw in the carb plug. Then use a remote NVA like the OS. The best one, I think, is the RNV body from the 40/46LA (the latest version that mounts to a separate metal bracket, NOT
