I'm a little alarmed that I will have to add about 3.5 to 4 pounds to nose of this plane to make it balance. It should bring it up to a total weight of about 27-28 pounds. Does anybody have any expereince in this matter? Will it still fly well and not land like a rocket? Anymore test flight advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

Hi

I have noticed that some aircraft take a lot of nose weight. The zero is one of them. The weight added to give you the correct CG
will make your model more forgiving upon landing than a lighter non correctly CG'ed model of the same design.

texans, corsairs, typhoons to name a few that almost always need ballast.

Good luck

Steve

Yep, I got the Yellow Zero, I'll bet I have bout the same weight your talking about, close to 4lbs in the cowl. What I did find out was she came in alittle hotter than I expected, not rocket like or too fast, but a glIder she's not. Keep some power on till you touch down. The last flight last season I was about four foot off the ground commin in for a landing and I cut the throttle. Big mistake, she dropped like a rock, If I had even a quarter throttle that would've pulled along enough to grease her in. I broke her a little, but she's all better now! :

Thanks for the info Steve and Phil!! Phil, Do you know what your total weight turned out to be? I guess I shouldn't be so concerned. I'm sure it will do fine at 28 pounds.

Thanks again!
Mark

A friend has one with a G-62 in the nose, and still had to add 6lbs of weight to balance. I am sure his plane is in the 28-30lb range. I have not landed it, but I have flown it around, and it is great flier. Feels real light on the sticks, more like a .60 size bird. i really like it.

Yeah, Mines got the G62 too. I opted for that both for power, and the weight factor, but it's still a short nose, thus the weight.
Mine rolls well, I tend to roll her slow, more scale, but she hated inverted. I needed allot of stick to keep her there. For me it was the low, full throttle, gear up passes with a P40 or F4U Corsair on my tail...........C'mon snow...melt!

Im building a Nosen P-51, I plan to decide whether to put the tail control servos under the canopy or under the tail feathers when I get farther along enough to check the balance. I have built and flown 3-.40 size airplanes, my first was a Midwest Mustang. (I learned to fly it on a buddy box) It was balanced just right but both Midwest Aerostars needed to be balanced at the front edge of the wing spar to fly right. Both tried to nose up and stall on take off, the first flight. I now am a firm believer of "tail-heavy is a earth magnet." I have only killed the Mustang and that was on the first flight of it's 3rd or 4th season. ( many errors in judgment) My second Aerostar is built with a lot of modifications to make it less of a trainer. the first Aerostar was given to a friend. I would much rather have a plane that is nose heavy than tail heavy due to the snatching and grabbing I have had to do to keep the tail heavy Aerostars from stalling on take-off. I have always been scared to float in on the landings therefore I usually come in kinda hot but I have been doing a lot of touch and go's and can land the Aerostar I fly now pretty good.

Also, putting 1.5-3 degrees of wash-out in the wing can save you from a tip stall when trying to land slow or take off as soon as the airspeed allows.

p.s. I also plan to get a used .90 Mustang arf and fly the wings off of it before I attempt to fly the Nosen.

Remember, tail heavy will kill a plane and nose heavy just makes it come in a bit hotter.

Good luck,,, James.

Thanks for all the great info guys!! Mine also has a G62 for power. I saw a couple just like mine fly at a fly in last year. The one thing that stood out to me was the speed of these planes. Very fast!! I'm sure I will be fine after the first flight or so. I love agile planes that go just where you point them!!

Thanks again!
Mark
