Guys:

Guess I need to be more thankfull of the Castle AFB air museum down the road about a mile. Stopping every month or so is a must for me, almost like a old girlfriend calling thingy. I lived in Marysville, Ca in the early 60's, home of Beale AFB. Did not hear any rumors about the SR-71 prior to seeing one doing toutch and gos. Almost drove off the road into a ditch. I flew F-86's while in AFROTC in 1955 which I consider almost pure junk. Now, to walk around an 71 and touch at will is great. We also have the British "Vulcan" wing bomber, a beautiful thing from all angles I would like to build and fly while I can. So much to do, so little time. ENJOY

If you had an airworthy “junk” Sabre in your hanger nowadays you would be a wealthy man!!!

I got a little distracted last week with some work im doing on the side... I hope to have more pictures posted soon. If this one flies ok, ill work on packaging it into some sort of short kit for people to build. Hopefully, I'll have this thing flying in June or July.

Just wanted to check in. Ive been busy with work and about to move in two weeks so I haven't been getting much done on the SR-71. I hope to pick up work soon after the move!

That's it no Christmas presents for you...

Thanks for the news and good luck with your move, they can be quite disruptive.

just wanted to make a quick post. This summer has been nuts with having to pack and move and dodging hurricanes. The last one caught us square on the chin tearing up the neighborhood pretty good. My place was ok except not having power until yesterday. Hopefully, I will get settled again and start back on the Blackbird. Hopefully, I'll have some more posts soon...sorry for the long pause

I was just thinking about you and your Blackbird. Good to hear that you're going back into production mode.I learned one thing with my .074 powered Blackbird, it does very gracefull flat spins and tight loops off of the hand launch if the CG is too far back. The forward fuselage area does factor into the wing area somehow.

CP,

I think that Kelly Johnson really had some BWB ideas in mind when he designed it. While from the side view it brings to mind the shape of an X-15 nose on the thing looks like a flying saucer.
An awesome design for the time it was built when you think about it. Given that the only thing that I know for sure could outrun it was the X-15, and that thing just barley had what you could call wings. Now that they are "retired" I have got to wonder what it's replacement looks like.
Yes they sat there is no replacement, but I wonder...
I really do not think that they did not do something else after the originals were flying in the 60's, other than build variants.
I have to think that all of the data from NASA's high speed fight testing in the 60's and 70's never went anywhere at all.
The stuff in orbit has limits to where it can be.

Funkworks,
Great to hear you are ok after the storm.
Can not wait to see some post I missed seeing your work and ideas.

love the design of your blackbird. My son just bought me a ARF kit of the SR-71 from Fly-boy models. Turned out pretty good with a few mods. It's a pusher too. The balance point on this one is pretty dead on. The instructions are pretty vague but can be looked at on flyboy.com. Wish I could be there to see yours go. mine is supposed to be powered by a 46 but I had a HB-50 that seemed to fit. got any suggestions on good props for speed. The prop on this plane is enclosed in the wing so I can't go any bigger than a 10 inch. As for the question about the nose and cabin of this design adding lift I can tell you that it does. It acts more like a flying wing than a wing and a fuse. Good luck with yours. I look foward to hearing of your success.

Rene saw your post on another thread. At least we know you're alive, you haven't posted anywhere for six months. What's happening with this project?

im ok Jim...just super busy workin... I havent been flying in forever either... Sorry for the long pause guys... Too many things had me distracted... I just started pulling out my gear last month so I can get going again. I decided to get my first Blackbird flying again to do more testing as I finish construction on number two. I'd like to get the CG dialed in a little better before turning my second prototype into the wind. The good thing is that #1 had only minor damage after flipping on its back when one main collapsed on touchdown.

The things I learned from #1:

1. It flies!
2. I think I have the control mix set up down more or less...
3. I got close with the CG... I tried to go for a nose heavy set up and that's what I got. The hot landing was a result of the extra speed I needed to carry to maintain control.
4. twins sound cool.

Thanks for being patient. This has been a fun and challenging project. I'll try to post more stuff soon of both prototypes...

So how soon will we be able to either get the plans or the kit? I still want one very badly and yours is the only one that fits my bill. Though I would prefer the bigger one that you have on the table.

That's a good question. I wish I had a better time frame to give you. Right now, my goal would be to have a set of prints available for next winters building season. Im not sure I will release plans for the smaller version. Maybe after I finish the drawings for the larger one. The basic drawings for the larger one are done. It's just a matter of making sure it flies and then adding the details and any changes after the test flights.

sounds fair enough but don't get lost again there's a lot of us out here that would love to have your bigger version. I have several ST40 that need a home and I also have a few of TT40 that are very reliable and a lot lighter than the ST40s that need a good home also. Keep us posted on your progress.

...hang on to those lighter TT 40's...Those would be pretty well suited for the airframe. I really like the TT.36's because they put out about the same power with a lower weight... The engines are close enough to the CG so weight isn't differences are not so critical... Thanks for hanging in with me

Oh I'll be here a long while and by the way I have six of these TT 40 and have flown quite a few planes I even had them on a B-17 once and made hamburger of a fellow flyers finger when he forgo number one engine was running and tryed to tweek out number two. There wasn't enough meat left to stich so they just wrapped it. Quite an experience for him plus the learning curve LOL

ouch! Thats a tough learning curve...

Ok...finally an UPDATE!

I got some work done over the weekend. I dont have much to show but I would say the smaller prototype has just a few more hours of work left before its ready to fly again... All the major repairs are done... All thats left is installing both engines and setting up the throttle linkages. I also need to cover the repair areas and install the Rx and battery. Ive decided not to fix any cosmetic damage and just make it airworthy...The idea is to use it to work out any other bugs before flying the larger one. One change I made is in the set up of the rear flight surfaces...they are basically split elevons. Four surfaces with two on each side... I have them tied into the reciever as elevons but I set them up mechanically to move at different rates...The inner surfaces have more deflection as the outter ones and Im hoping this will make the model less twichy along the roll axis...Im also going to move the CG back a little since I remember flying with a good amount of back presure just to keep the nose level... I'll try to post a photo soon...
