Thanks guys!

I got a little slowed down for a bit because I ran out of flat black monokote. I finally got some more and will be back at it tonight. The top will take about 95% of my covering time since there are so many curves...The nacelles are the hardest, but the bottom is totally flat. I plan on using a large white stripe or cross on the underside to help with orientation. I hope to get most of the top done this weekend.

So the whole thing is a true flat bottom airfoil? I could see from construction pics that the tips are flat plate, but I didn't know you had left off details on the under side of the fuse and chines. I'm interested to see how that behaves at high speed and at high AOA.

the whole thing is built on top of 1/4'' balsa. In the front section the bottom was shaped a little like a very shallow "V". This shape got blended where it meets the delta where the underside is beveled back about an inch. In some of the earlier pics you can notice the thick balsa along the edge of the chine and leading edge. In the more recent pics you will notice the edge is more defined. I did it this way to keep this model simple and quicker to build. Ive got about one degree of downthrust and the engine are pointing inwards about one degree too.

Got alot done last night. Trying to finish the covering before our club meeting on thursday night. Overall, Im happy with the model. Ive got most of the top covered now except the forward area ahead of the delta. Covering the delta and nacelles was a pain to put it mildly... Im not a big fan of Monokote right now. I had some flat black left over from another project so I used it up before buying more. I got some more and the color of the new one is differnent. They are both monokote flat black but the new one almost looks like a dark charcoal grey. Its really noticable where the two colors meet. Im not about to recover the other sections either. I think Im going to hit the older Monokote with some steel wool to maybe knock off some of the blackness... I'll post some more pictures soon..

I got the same type deal with some neon green Ucote. My plane changed into two diffrent colors after a few hours in the sun at the field.
At 200mph who cares right?

Hey FW,

This is really cool. Having spent a several years keeping the real deal in the air its refreshing to see someone model it. Anyway, looks awesome.

BTW: The real one balances out at station line 615 which is just forward of the front main trunion bearing (just before takeoff fuel is transferred aft to ensure this aft C.G). It gets real light on the nose gear for a big honkin' chunk-o-titanium.

I'd really like to see some video -- awesome.

Robert

Thank you for your service Robert!

Thanks for the tip. The planform on mine is highly modified from the original. I've added more wingarea and reduced the rear sweep of the delta and tried to hide it the best I could. The leading edge of the outter panel is not in line with the main delta but actually a little forward to add wingarea. The nacelle between the panels breaks up the line well and gives the illusion of a delta wing. Ive got the CG figured to be about where the engine cylinder heads are on the model. The internal structure lead me to place the main gear more aft than I would have liked.

My uncle was an instructor out at Beale several years ago. I got a chance to see one takeoff. I'll never forget it. That thing took off like a mad cat!

I figured you did that for prop clearance. When was your uncle out at Beale? I spent some time there myself between 83-89 with a few jaunts here and there as well.

Anyway there was a bunch in my area that was trying to kit this thing in the mid-80s for DF. As I remember their success was pretty limited because the aircraft had troubles rotating on takeoff. This thing flies like a surfboard and its angle of attack is about 7.5 degrees nose up in normal flight. There is a distinctive incidence change in the outboard wings that helps this dramatically. Actually its a droop on the leading edge that runs almost to the hinge line of the outboard elevon. I have included a 3-view from one of the blackbird pubs. Its really hard to see if you are looking at photos since it blends into the wing.

I hope this helps!

Robert

Robert...You might have been there while he was there. He was Lt. Col. H. Rodriguez. I think I visited him with my parents back in the summer of '89. He gave my dad and I a tour and let us play with the simulator.

I did add some droop to the outboard leading edge. I did it to help delay any tip stalls. The larger version Im planning has a more pronounced droop. It was harder to replicate on the smaller version while keeping the structure simple. This little one is just a test rig. Im guessing the model needs to build up a good amount of speed in order to rotate properly so I made sure plenty of power and plenty of paved runway.
