Alright...I am about ready to make this thing fly for real...off the roof of my house!! I cannot..I repeat..CANNOT tame the tail! It doesn't matter what I set the gyro (csm180) at or the setting on my radio (hitec eclipse), it just wants to piroette from the time it spools up till i drop the throttle. I thought it might be the tail pushrod flexing, so I changed it to a 2x56 rod. That didn't help. So does anyone have any suggestions or comments taht will maybe help me out a little before I just throw this thing away!!!

The tail of the Hornet is both the hardest part, and the most important part, to set up properly. I'll admit it took me a while, but when I finally arrived, it was worth the journey. Once the tail is working well, you will simply love flying this thing! There are a few basic tips that if followed carefully, will consistently result in a good tail:

1. Make sure that the gears are not slipping on the T/R output shaft or the T/R drive shaft. A VERY small drop of CA applied with the tip of a pin will insure no slippage, and if applied moderately, will also allow easy disassembly.

2. Make sure that you have greased the threads on the hub and that you have enlarged the clevis pin holes by jiggling them on the posts untill they work VERY freely when the heli is running. Detach the T/R pushrod from the clevis at the servo and run up the heli (sans blades) in your hand while moving the pushrod with your other hand. If it works freely, you're good to go, if not, keep trying until it does.

3. Make sure that you have 30mm of pitch as stated in the manual, and make triple-sure that the pitch is in the correct direction. Note which way the rotor and T/R turn, then make sure your blades are mounded correctly for rotation in that direction, then note which way the pitch needs to be to counteract the torque of the head. Then fold the blades and set them to 30mm.

4. Once you have set the blade pitch, make sure that there is room for your tail pitch slider to move in both directions. If it is running into the hub or the gear box, then adjust the output shaft (slide it in the appropriate direction) to give you more room in the needed direction. Properly adjusted, the arm of the bellcrank will be perpendicular to the boom at neutral, and the blades will have 30mm of pitch in the correct direction.

5. Make sure the hub isn't slipping on the output shaft and that it is square to the shaft. Ensure that the distance from the blade holder/hub to the boom is the same on heach side by measuring, rotating the T/R 180 degrees, then measuring again to the same point on the boom.

6. Make sure the T/R hub is balanced.

7. Make sure your servo isn't reversed.

8. Make sure your gyro doesn't need to be flipped/reversed (i.e., that it is operating in the correct direction).

9. Make sure that your T/R gears and T/R drive gears are properly meshed. If you are using the stock gears, you'll note that they are not true. Match the high side of one gear with the low side of the other gear, then mesh them as close as possible while still running smooth. You want as little lash as possible at both the T/R greabox and at the conical drive gear.

All these tips can be found in greater detail at:

I take no credit for them. Thank Walt Ferar.

Mine had the tail rotor shaft spinning inside the tail rotor assembly. I removed the tail rotor and put some epoxy on the shaft and reinstalled the tail rotor. Problem solved
