I know its a strange question, but could you not run the ailerons and wing through table saw set at the correct angle and depth to get your bevels quickly?

I know there are some people that do that. I just can't see how with the slight taper from the inboard end to the tip. If I practiced, or had a much larger saw, I could probably get it down. I just don't want to take a chance and mess up so I carve it down close, then sand it right on. A palm sander does make things go quicker, you just need to use a finer sand paper like 200 grit. I've also seen the dremel tool planer atatchment that looks way cool for this process.

By trade I am a carpenter and I use the same method for wood paneling and wainscoating. I would think so long as you had a helper you could do it. For that matter perhaps its a posibility to do this PIOR to installing them. A simple jig of the female verions of your bevels would allow an accurate alighnment of your hinging.

Regarding the taper of the wings, I dont think it would be an issue. The portion being cut is going to be up againse the fence of the table saw. This will ensure a straight cut so long as you hold it firm againse the fence. I might trim a few pieces as an example to explain what I am talking about.

I may have to give it a try on my next one. I'm giving seriouse thought to the Dremel planer atatchment at the moment.

Come to think of it you might even be able to get away with a router table using the correct bit.

Yep, its getting closer. Looks like you did a good job on those wings! Glad to hear it flew great. I've got the right wing about rapped up. I went through some tools I had and found a long bladed sheetrock knife. This worked very good for carving the taper on the hinge line. I spent about half the time carving, and I needed very little sanding afterwards. I should have found that sooner!! I've got a strong 4.5" deflection each direction on the ailerons.

Steve,

Great to see you found a solution. I will post some pictures of my little carpentry experiment. Heck I should make a website with all the little tricks I have learned for model planes and carpentry.
