Does anyone know who makes this J-3 - I think it is the alternate covering version H9 did years ago, but not sure - bought it from a guy that had it thrown in a barn - never flown much, I am refurbishing it, took off 108 2C and putting on OS 120 4C - 86" wingspan.

I am not sure but it looks like it could be a Sig clip wing 1/4 scale kit built J3 Cub....I have the 1/4 scale with the regular wing and it has about a 104" span . If it is the Sig Kit Plane you have a real nice plane to work with....I have an OS 120 four stroke on mine and it has lots of power...

I had assumed it was an ARF, mainly because I thought I had seen the color scheme somewhere. But now that I look at it closer, I think you are right - it may be a Sig clipped wing to 86" - going to get it redone in the next few weeks, will get pic up when done. Not going to completely redo all covering, but recover problem areas and repower with a OS 120. I have a few other Cubs including the one shown below -

I am going to get this ARF, mind you I usually build my airplanes, but this looks like a great plane to have. I am looking at the engines for this and really not sure were to go. Some of the engines might require adding nose weight others may require cutting more from the cowling. I will also be using this on floats from time to time.

1-Zenoah 20ccEI - $339.99 - 1.20 cu-in - 41.6 oz
2-Zenoah 26cc - $324.99 - 1.55 cu-in - 59.6 oz
3-OS GT-22 - $409.99 - 1.35 cu-in - 26.8 oz
4-DLE20 - $249.00 - 1.22 cu-in - 29.2 oz
5-DLE30 - $279.95 - 1.86 cu-in - 32.0 oz
6-Saito FG-21 - $504.99 - 1.26 cu-in - 31.2 oz

What would you choose?

I have an Evolution 26GT in mine (which Horizon seems to have discontinued!?) and fly it exclusively off floats. Other than take off, I rarely fly about 1/2 throttle. Even at take off, I can usually get off the water at about 2/3 throttle. With the stock tank, I can get close to 30 minutes of flying time. Love the combination.

Winglift, I have the 1/4 Hanger 9 J-3 Cub with the DLE 20 installed. It is the perfect engine if you want gas. See post #1377 above. I mistated about the Jtek muffler, it is stock muffler. No added weight in nose and weighs about 14#.
It flys awesome and is not underpowered at all. I fly it about 1/2 throttle or less most of the time.

Thanks,
Eddie

Discontinued? Must have been recently, as I bought one this fall for my H9 Tiger Moth.
Probably is true, tho. Just my luck.

Mine has a CRRC 26, which I had a lot of trouble with initially. Turns an 18x6 wood and flies very scale-ish. I have it on floats and it is adequately powered. It needed no nose weight to balance at all.

Wnglift,

I put he FG-30B in mine and love it. Like the guys have said, 1/3-1/2 power for cruising looks about right. I thought about the 21, but really enjoy excess power, just in case. Additionally I wanted to be able to slap floats on it without a second thought.

I really hate the sound of the gas two strokes and didn't want my Cub experience diminished by an annoying sound. The 30 is so quiet and scale sounding that it draws compliments every time it heads to the field. The other nice thing about gas is that I have about three to four hours on the plane and still am using my first gallon of gas. I set my timer for 30 min, and still land with a 1/3 tank...those gas four strokes are silly efficient.

The one thing to note is that the latest Saito instructions clearly say the motor does not need to be choked, and while that may be true if you use a starter, I find that with a simple choke tool I can easily hand-start the plane. I can explain more if anyone is interested

Dave

I also think that the 4 stroke sounds much better and Saito sure makes rock solid engines. They are a bit pricey $640 for the FG30. I also like the idea of reserve power, but I am still curious to know if the FG21 would do on this plane w/ floats since cannonball200 stated that he has plenty of power?

cannonball200
Have you flown this with floats?

bucho
I searched for this engine and found them going for $940 (Chiefaircraft & Tower). Where did you see this at $450? I am leaning to gas anyway, but was curious about the engine.

I also found a Mintor 33 engine at Chiefaircraft at $325. This is a beautifully made engine, 2.0 cu-in 33.6 oz, using a reed valve. The recomended prop is 19". Does anyone know about these engines?

Winglift,

cannonball200 here, no, I don't have floats on my J-3. The Dle 20 I think would fly it however with floats. The guy's are right about the Saito 4 strokes sounding realistic. The gas 4 stroke would be awesome. I just cannot afford one though. In retirement, my pay check went down and cuts me out of some of my cadilac hobby wants!

Good luck on your J-3 Piper Cub adventure! They are awesome. My son & I bought one in 2006 in Feb and sold it in Nov same year. He is a jet pilot and really enjoyed relaxing flying the J-3 and gave me several hours on the stick too.

Eddie,
I too am/was a full scale pilot, cfii, however have not flown for many years......way too expensive, so now I fly RC. I too am retired, but save my pennies until I can afford to buy the things that I want. In this case I will probably go for the Saito as it is an engine that will last and in the long run will save money.

Bucho,
I just cannot see spending $940 for an engine on this, which is the price at tower and chiefaircraft. Where did you get this for $450? Link?

Winglift,
The way I read his statement, this is available on RCUniverse. It might have been in the clasifieds, being sold as used.

Been flying mine for almost a year now and the tailwheel is loosing effectiveness. I tightened the stock springs twice and lately replaced them with some stiffer ones from ACE Hardware but the tail wheel still doesn't move as freely and with as much authority as I'd like for taxiing.

Anybody else have this problem and a fix?

BTW, agree with cannonball about the DLE-20. Perfect gas engine for this model. More than enough power and can fly 40min. on a tank of gas with no added nose weight. Mine came in at just over #14 with 5in. Dubro tires.
