was running my avalanche xp yesterday untill the motor locked up[:@]. took it apart only to find that the wrist pin clip had came out and scared the piston and sleeve. [:@]. has anyone had this problem before

rclynx -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 5:24:16 PM)

Haven't seen anything on that at all in the last months, but it does happen.............if its fairly new I would try for warranty or at least engine exchange[&o]

nightwolf1969c -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 5:38:24 PM)

yes i have had it for less than a month . it has only 10 tanks on it

Chubbysdad -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 5:48:15 PM)

motors dont have a warranty. Once fuel is put in it, its over. you can do the exchange or even rebuild it your self cheaper.

nightwolf1969c -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 7:33:16 PM)

i would rebuild it but redcat is out of piston and sleeves . thinking about just gettng a different motor what would be a good motors?

Kemo -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 7:58:24 PM)

Most engine manufacturers come with a warranty. Redcats engines do not... except for the SH engine that does come with it, it SHOULD be warrantied by the manufacturer.

So the SH motors have a warrenty? If so, then he should have no problems the avalanche comes with the SH .28 in it.

Kemo -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 8:06:51 PM)

unless they have changed policy in the past 3 years...

It might have to go to global hobby, but here is the issue. They might not take it because it was not purchased through them. So, this being said, if Redcat themselves will not warranty it, then you might not be able to be honored the warranty.

shengine@ms36.hinet.net

Email them and see what they will do for you. Make sure you mention what you bought and what engine came with it. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it comes with the PT2802B-P3 SH engine.

nightwolf1969c -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 9:06:00 PM)

sent a claim to redcat and they sent this back to me "I have never heard of that happening before and I have been doing this for alot of years.

The only thing that we can do to fix this is the engine warranty program or you can buy a new piston and sleeve.

Thank You,
Nick Lindholm"

Kemo -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 9:08:54 PM)

thats 100% bogus.

Ask how long he has worked for redcat. Engine failures like that happen all the time... its not the first time in history that it happened.

Redcat Nick -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 9:29:36 PM)

I have been with Redcat for 2 years and been in the hobby for almost 9. All that I said was that I haven't heard of wrist pins coming out while still inside the engine.

how would redcat know if the engine wasnt run too lean? Overheated, maybe the rc ran out of control and hit high rpms or something. You cant really say how an engine was run.

What does how long someone has worked for redcat have to do with anything?

I have been in the hobby for many years and never seen a wrist pin come out, i have seen alot of broken connection rods, lol. I am not saying anyone is at fault so dont get me wrong, just that this is a hobby and anyting is possible but its hard to hold someone responsible.

Kemo -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 10:15:02 PM)

the ONLY reason a pin is going to come out is due to an issue with manufacturing. It wont happen due to overheating, running too lean.. and so on.

You have a CLIP that is supposed to hold that in. And when that clip fails, so does the engine shortly after.

Manufacturer error, not user error.

HimotoRacingUSA -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 10:24:51 PM)

i know what holds the pin in, lol. That pin could get weak if it gets hot, its under pressure and could fail, just like any metal in the engine, i am not saying thats what happened but who knows? If manufacturers replaced engines every time one fails they would be out of business in no time, i tried to do a warranty on an os .18 and they said it was end user error, run to lean, sorry we cant help you. I had an os with less than a gallon thru it and it lost compression, it was like 2 months old, they say it has a 2 year warranty on it, lol. Yeah the warranty was you can buy a new piston and sleeve from one of our distrubitors, tower.

Kemo -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 10:26:35 PM)

this guy dropped his savage off a jump and it landed on the cooling head. The crankcase split into 2, the only thing holding the other half of the engine on was the piston in the sleeve.

HPI sent him a new engine.

A company will do whatever they can to keep their customers happy.

Glowplugs are the lie detectors of nitro. If that engine was overheated, it would have failed long before the clip holding the pin in.

HimotoRacingUSA -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 10:31:27 PM)

wow, he was lucky, no??? i mean think about it, if you sold a car to someone and they returned it, scratches on the head and the crank case broken in half, would you replace it? I would be like, what did you do, hit this with a hammer, lol. I think redcat has a pretty good engine replacement program, 1/2 retail, its alot better than traxxas, they want $130 or the 3.3 and $100 for the 2.5, i think i can buy them cheaper from my lhs than that, its a real joke, not to mention you have to pay for shipping your engine to them. Paying 1/2 retail is a good deal.

Kemo -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 10:52:25 PM)

if you were driving your new car/truck off the dealership lot and it broke a circlip wouldn't you be a little angry if they made you pay for it instead of covering it under warranty?

lets say you buy a dodge but it has a mitsubishi engine in it. one of the 2 companies is going to eat the part and labor.

The odds of that clip failing due to user error is less than 1% when new from box or bolted in an RTR.

HimotoRacingUSA -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 10:59:06 PM)

there is a big difference between a car engine and these engines, #1 is there is oil in the crank case, no?? There is also a difference in price, a few thousand. New car manufacturers give you a warranty, if you look, redcat does not once there is fuel in the engine. only the radio system for the first 30 days. What do you think dodge would do if you flipped your car on its roof during a roll over and the engine broke? do you think they would replace it, what if you were jumping your new dodge ram 20ft. in the air and the engine broke? do you think they would replace it? i know its apples and oranges but?!?!?!?!? Believe me, i know where your coming from.

how many tanks you have thru that engine bro, looks kinda black on the ports and the top outside ring.

nightwolf1969c -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 11:30:22 PM)

it wasn't the pin that faled it was the clip that came loose and scared the piston and sleeve and caused it to lock up

nightwolf1969c -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 11:31:33 PM)

8 plus breakin and had high and low side neddles set at 3 turns each

HimotoRacingUSA -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 11:38:09 PM)

i know bro, and dont take offence to anything i am saying, i am not blaming you, these engines are real touchy and under alot of stress and anything is possible, you are the first person i have ever seen this happening to. Its probably manufacturer defect but its hard to tell.

so 5 for break in and 8 running, 13 tanks? If it was the first tank then you would have a good case, but 13 tanks is a little more, it shouldnt have happened but, what can you do, put an sts in it, like the .30!!!!! Or if you want a good reliable engine get the os .30

nightwolf1969c -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/10/2007 11:49:49 PM)

thinking about getting a sts 30 or d28m

rclynx -> RE: wrist pin clip (8/11/2007 12:08:55 AM)

XTM 6 port or SH pro are good alternatives[:D]
