Hey guys, after a month of deliberation i have decided to convert my raze to electric power, I just couldnt keep ur with maintenece for the nitro motor, so Im converting over to electric than finaly to brushless. Time to put my 15 year old mind to the test!! all suggestions welcome.

ok i have a few questions for u guys...
1. Should I use mechanical brakes or the esc's brake?

2. What motor and speed control should i use? ( i was looking a feigao 9xl)

3. What pinion size should i run?

I NEED ASSISTANCE WITH THIS PROJECT, ANY AND ALL HELP IS ACCEPTED

donations of pinion/battery building kits would be awesome. lmk what you guys think

I'm very much into electric 1/8's and I've raced against an E-Raze.

1. Use ESC brakes. The Raze is heavy enough as it is. You don't need the extra weight and ESC brakes work great. In fact, you will have to dial some of the brakes out.
2. Until the Mamba Monster Max comes out, the only economical choice is the Mamba Max. Get one at Bishop Power Products for $112.00. The motor you picked will get you by, but I can't recommend it. I've seen several problems with Feigao motors when used with this application. They are priced nice, but I can only recommend the Neu line of motors. I use the Neu 1512 2D/F.
3. I'm geared 11/46. You will need to find a plastic spur gear for your center diff. I use a Kyosho center diff in my Mugen because Mugen has no plastic spur.

As for donations, good luck. Pinions are $8 - $13 each and you won't need any battery building stuff. You will have to run LiPo or your Raze will be an 11-pound pig.

Use the ESC brake, Use a Mamba Max ESC and a feigao 9l motor, Start at at 11t pinion and work your way up. Me and others here on RCU will guide you through the steps.

I think the 9L (which is the one I have in my E-maxx) will run hot as it has 30% less torque than the XL motors... He should be ok with the XL.

Oh, and aren't NEU motors like HUNDEREDs of dollars? That's what I thought, and seeing as how he's on a budget, maybe the XL might be a good jump into brushless for cheap. But I realize that Neu motors are supposed to be higer quality, but then I still can't see myself paying 3x the price for one.

The raze weighs 7.7lbs w/o fuel and receiver batteries. The XL series motors are meant for car/trucks 10lbs+. It wouldnt have enough speed to satisfy anyone in a raze. I still the the 9L is your best bet.

Well, the XL is used in many other trucks and such, but if he wants a faster one I'd recommend the 6 or 7XL, they are around the same kv as the 9L but will handle more power... I mean for $10 more I think it's worth it. You can always gear up with the XL's without loading up the motor as much as you would the "L" motor.... I run the L in my E-maxx and it heats up if I gear it up to go about ~30mph.. It runs cooler but only if I gear it down so it goes about as fast as the stock motors.....

BTW rc-monster's prices are jacked up.. Here's where I got my 9L, heck they even sell a 3.2mm or 1/8th" (standard motor shaft) version of it which I ordered (no need to buy rip off $12 pinions for me!) The motors are $10 cheaper, and I used regular priority shipping and got it in 4 days for $68 total. offshoreelectrics.com

dang... $47 for an 8xl is a great deal. You should expect to pay about $80-90 retail on a normal day... Good score!

Anyways, I'm going to have to toss my 2 cents in with the XL crowd. The "L" series will get really hot. You're much better off with a 6XL or 7XL like Slo-V Flyer suggested. It will run cooler, provide more torque, and its only $10-15 more than the "L" motor.

I hate buying a motor, then wanting more power/speed two weeks later, so my philosophy is go big right from the start. You can always gear up (i.e. use a smaller pinion) if its too fast. Or even drop the voltage if you need to slow down. Its harder to gain those extra mph when you're already pushing a smaller motor to its limits.

If and When your budget becomes larger, definitely look into the Neu 1515 and Lehner 1940 series motors. They cost a lot, and rightfully so. They are top of the line motors and can't be beat in efficiency and smoothness. They are also rated for higher rpms. The feigao motors tend to fall apart (the rotors blow up) when run at extreme rpms. I think 40K rpms is the max suggested limit. the Neu's and Lehners can go much higher... My lehner 4200XL is rated at 65K rpms.

The "L" motor will run too hot and won't last long. The "XL" is better if you can get it. The weight of the vehicle is only half the issuse.
Gear ratios play a role too. That's why a certain motor works in a big MT, but it's not big enough for a 1/8 buggy. If you are building this for fun and bashing, the Feigao will be OK. If you plan to race it, get two. The Neu motor is $240.00, but it's the last motor you'll ever need.

For a motor mount, go to RC Product Designs:http://www.rcproductdesigns.com/
He doesn't have a Raze electric conversion kit listed, but I think he was working on one.

55 dolars for just a motor mount????? thats insane. and i would rather make things i have acces to tools, when i go back to school ill have acces to more things. IE band saw, lathe, mill..(robbotics team perks) but i have sufficent tools for now.

what style motor mount shouldi make, i was looking at finedesign's clamp setup, i could probablly make somthing with the same concept, what about a boat motor mount or a bent peice of aluminum
something like this
http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-drmount
so i can use the original motor mout holes.
i just want to get mockups goin.

what about mounting the motor off a flat plate attached to the center diff holders? that seems simpler

if anyone has converted an 1/8 scale buggy show me pics!!! my pics will be up by tommorow night
