Tim, am I glad I found you guys tonight. Got my 1st heli, V2 three weeks ago, had 1st battery tonight and really got to grips with it, for a change I was master. This was flight 40, over 8 1/2 hours with no shunts and I was feeling over the moon. 2nd battery 5 minutes into the flight and suddenly the motor screamed and she fell out of the air. At that point it was only about 4 feet up and I got away with it. On inspection the belt had climbed onto the LH side of the pulley (looking from the top rear) and jammed itself up against the housing effectively seizing the tail pulley.
Everything was set meticulously to the book, I can only assume that there was not enough belt tension so allowing the belt to climb off the teeth. Interestingly the belt has frayed BOTH sides. Everthing seems to line up ok and is free. I agree with you Tim, I think there must be a duff batch of belts about and I for one am going to let Align know about it! Finding this thread has cooled me down a bit, it's good to know I am not alone with this one. Gary. p.s. this should be the last thing to wear out, look how long cambelts last, 50,000 miles?

Gary,

Glad to hear that your incident turned out to be pretty minor. I'd suggest that you abandon the Align belts and go with the Gates. I've been through several Align belts and the tension has been correct. I think that the belts just aren't consistent from Align. Who knows, the pitch could be off just a touch which develops into a clicking and the belt quickly frays and deteriorates under that condition. I have just switched to the Gates myself and am so far pretty happy ~25 flights.
As far as letting Align know about it, I tried working with AlignUSA to address some parts that came in my V2 kit un-machined and a defective Align 35x ESC and they basically couldn't have cared less. They stated that as the warranty only covered defects in workmanship for the first 30days that the dealer has the item in the shelf. So if the kit sits sealed on the shelf and goes unsold for 30days there is no warranty from Align. Nice. I decided to move on and got the Gates belt. Does anyone know if the Thunder Power Extreme 450 uses a belt driven tail??

Thanks for the info Eric, I assume that Gates is a US manufacturer. As a matter of interest we have a guy living near to us who together with his buddies buy quite a lot of stuff from Align direct. He has a couple of genuine Align belts with the part number HT 1003T which is supposed to be an upgrade belt apparently. Note the T on the end. I am going down to get one this evening and will keep you posted on it's progress. It was really weird, no clicking noises, looked fine just before the flight then 1/2 way through-wham. It all happened so quickly that when the belt seized against the housing it grabbed so tight it almost stopped the main blades so I had no tail rotation (yaw) at all, it just dropped vertically out of the air. Thank God I am only at the hovering stage. Gary.

i dont know about these little heli's (i fly nitro's, just ordered a 450se so im hanging around this side of the forum a bit now) but things often wear out. when i first started i was expecting things to last until you crashed, however thats not the case. look at ball links for example. they dont last too long as they wear in and develop slop. maybe the belt is one of these things that just need replacaing frequently i.e. is not designed to last long. for example these are common things you have to change/check on a raptor, click here.

Well my latest belt seems to be doing very well - about 25 flights so far and no signs of wear. My previous belts were leaving rubber dust (residue) on some of the tail components, but I don't see it with this one. I have been keeping the tension set at the recommended setting, and lubing every dozen flights with silicone using a q-tip as I rotate the blades.

With the inconsistency of the Align belts I am going to get some Gates belts to try. Who stocks these? (mail order)

Thanks for all the feedback - I'll keep you guys posted on the lifespan of this belt. I'm glad it hasn't snapped as I have gotten over the hover hurdle (nose in especially) and now I am flying out and around, faster and higher. These thing are real fun!!!

Thanks,

Tim Wolfe

I got mine from http://www.techmodelproducts.com. You have to dig around on the site to find them. They are in the products 450parts section and you need to scroll WAY down to find them. I have been very happy dealing with these guys too. Great service. Good luck!!

I too am a newbie, and after going through several belts....none of them getting more than 5 flights...and trying loose and tight belt tensions...I decided to tear apart the tail assembly. Upon very close inspection, the plastic tail gear was showing signs of wear...and actually some of the teeth were slightly deformed. Some of my belts were riding up over the flanged edges of the plastic tail gear and jamming the tail assembly. Some of them were simply shredding and depositing strands of material around the gear shaft. I replaced the tail gear and its shaft, and it is too early to tell the results, but I have lubed it well with silicone spray...all along its inner and outer surfaces....and after only (4) ten minute flights, it is still doing just fine...and my belt tension is "snug", as per manual. I think a loose belt would allow slippage and only induce more and faster wear.
I will be looking to find a METAL tail gear as the next replacement. The plastic one just appears to be too soft for the task.

Eric & Tim, it's obviously very akward for me to get the Jap Gates belts over here. I have now got 2 of the Align HT 1003T (upgrade) belts and had no problems on 3 flights this evening so we'll see how they go. They cost almost twice as much as the std belt but I don't mind that if I'm not going to get thrown out of the sky. The bit in red is exactly what's written on the packaging so if Align are producing this as an upgrade there must be a reason for it! Food for thought, Gary.

I had the same problem with my SE V2. Do you lube the belt? I started using silcone oil on mine and I have not had a belt shred since. You might give that a try.
