At the risk of getting a little off-thread here, we'll add our 2cents on electric car braking. Sorry, Brian, we'll steer back onto the thread at the end, promise. Team AHR43 is one of the few brushed rails running an ESC. That gives us braking ability, which we like, UNLESS we lose a pinion or spur gear, or throw a drive belt. At present, braking on brushed electric relies wholly on the motor and keeping it in the drive loop. Braking for brushless (BL) MAY be a different matter. Near as we know all BL are using a controller (BL equivalent of an ESC), but are unsure of how braking is programmed into them. Not too well from what we have seen. Most of the Extreme Class cars use the safety catch net as a braking system. Kinda hard on bodies we would think. So, that brings us to alternate braking systems for electric cars. Most don't need them, and the conventional slam-switch set up works O.K. for the speeds they generate. UNLESS, of course, you're a real hot dog and can use braking strategy in the speed traps to prevent a break-out in bracket class. BTW-Team AHR43 is not on that hot-dog list... For those of us using an ESC, again, we have that - as we see it - desirable feature. Comes down to car control. It's a nice thing to have. There IS driving involved in RC drag racing, in spite of what some may think. We do agree with both Brian and Griz that things really happen fast in critical situations, and we as drivers are usually OBE (an old military expression: Overcome By Events). For a variety of reasons, parachutes don't work well for fast RC cars. Slash, Paul Songas, and we here at Team AHR43 went over that very ground not a week ago. What that does leave the RC electric racer with is the OPTION of developing a rear axle braking system for the very fastest cars, e.g., Extreme, Top Fuel Electric and F/C, maybe some of the hot-dog ProMods fall in there too. Anyway, we here at Team AHR43 are looking into a rear axle braking system should we go with a Top Fuel Electric car in RY 2008. Again, to us it's a personal preference about controlling the car instead of just aiming for the catch net. Anyway, check out the vids. It's not all crash-and-burn like ESPN2 NHRA drag racing coverage - there's some tuning info there if you watch closely. Never can get enough information... //AC// Team AHR43
