Hey All,

I just posted a new drag video from my trip to Minnesota! Was a fun time!

I have a bunch of drag videos if you haven't seen em.. make sure to check them all out!

I don't think I can post a link to the version on youtube.. here's the direct link
to the video section.. hope that's ok. It's the top video with the picture of Mike Ogle's 1/4 scale!

Big Squid RC Drag Video Here

Hope that works.

I had no idea!
There is more carnage in drag racing than monster truck bashing....alot of out of control vehicles too. looks like fun!

Glad you like the vids.

If you are asking about the crashing in the Minnesota video.. I think there was hardly any. There was maybe one destroyed vehicle.. that rail/dragster.. the other crashes were just bumps and bruises. Keep in mind that at the MN shoot.. I had 2 hours of footage from a 8 hour day.. and packed it into 5 minutes. So the crashes make some of the highlights.

As for some of the other videos.. it's kinda the same thing.. after a TON of shooting, the crashes always make good footage. (is there another reason to watch nascar highlights? don't answer that...)

One of the things, at least up here it seems.. these cars can get out of control. A lot of people(spectators) think these guys have
total control over their vehciles, when they really dont. Your talking about somthing that is hitting the 60mph mark in 1 second! If things get a little squirly, or you start heading towards a wall, there is NO reaction time. You don't have time to steer, or brake.. it's more close your eyes and hope for the best. Obviously I'm exaggerating a little, but not by much. A lot of the electric drag cars dont' have a speed control. They have a switch. It's ON or OFF. The click the switch.. it puts ALL the battery power directly into the motor and that's it. There is no break. They can hit another switch to short the motor.. and sometimes that does not work so well.. so the car keeps going.

I have had the King Squid for over a year now.. bounced off a few walls.. haven't broken anything that has kept me from racing it.

Ah, I C. I thought they just didnt hit the brakes because of a failure or something but there are no brakes. Thats very interesting about the "lack" of a speed control. Are there little chutes that could slow down a dragster or is it just too much weight?

There have been some attempts at chutes.. but nothing really in mass production.. mostly some out of the garage stuff. Nitro Rage RC makes some.. but I don't think they have done any in a while. It is some extra weight as well so....

Brian is Right Some Elect Drag cars dont have Brakes... But Most RC Drag Cars Do.. ALL Nitro RC Drag Cars have Brakes mainly Disc Brakes...Guys a 1/10th scale Drag Strip is 132 feet and ya need at least another 130+ feet to stop the cars safely....The Quickest and Fastest 1/10th scale Runs I know of are 1.403 ET and 108 MPH...in 132 feet{{ 10th scale 1/4 mile}} Both by the same guy but on diffrant Runs... Of course The Larger Scale Drag cars run a Lil slower and not quite as Quick...But are more stable than the 10th scale cars..But no matter what scale you Run Its Loads of Fun and EZ to get into to start RC Drag Racing...Check out some Cars and Stuff on www.bigsquidrc.com in the fourms...Look for Midwest RC Drag Racing Series... Join the Fun Guys!!!!!! Hope ta see you there.... John.

Ditto on the closing of the eyes part. When things go bad you just don't have time to think or do anything. By the time you have processed that something is happening its all over but the crying. I broke my rail in half 3 times. Twice were hits that you wouldn't think would do anything but they ended up being the worst. One time it dug a nice sized hole. Once it bounced up over the net did a bank shot off a tin building then augered in. I never did find the wheelie bar off that car. The wreck I tore up the most stuff ended up getting me a trophy and some bucks That car was almost a total write off as it bent everything on the car. The rear plate was twisted even. I think I ended up with the motor engine mounts servo stand offs and the rear wing mounts. The rest was totaled. On the other hand I've seen some wrecks you'd swear would ruin the car and they are back on the track in less than an hour easy. Its not for the timid. If you are scared to total a car you won't do that well in drag racing. On the video front I have my multi camera rig all tuned up now and I'll be heading down to San Antonio to video the Labor Day money race as well as the IMDRA World Finals. Maybe more but those two for sure. Lots of big races coming up here in the fall so I'm gonna be busy. One other drag racing event I want to try and get too is the final for the Texas Twister series at the Autorama in Houston. That should be a cool event.

At the risk of getting a little off-thread here, we'll add our 2cents on electric car braking. Sorry, Brian, we'll steer back onto the thread at the end, promise.

Team AHR43 is one of the few brushed rails running an ESC. That gives us braking ability, which we like, UNLESS we lose a pinion or spur gear, or throw a drive belt. At present, braking on brushed electric relies wholly on the motor and keeping it in the drive loop. Braking for brushless (BL) MAY be a different matter. Near as we know all BL are using a controller (BL equivalent of an ESC), but are unsure of how braking is programmed into them. Not too well from what we have seen. Most of the Extreme Class cars use the safety catch net as a braking system. Kinda hard on bodies we would think.

So, that brings us to alternate braking systems for electric cars. Most don't need them, and the conventional slam-switch set up works O.K. for the speeds they generate. UNLESS, of course, you're a real hot dog and can use braking strategy in the speed traps to prevent a break-out in bracket class. BTW-Team AHR43 is not on that hot-dog list...

For those of us using an ESC, again, we have that - as we see it - desirable feature. Comes down to car control. It's a nice thing to have. There IS driving involved in RC drag racing, in spite of what some may think. We do agree with both Brian and Griz that things really happen fast in critical situations, and we as drivers are usually OBE (an old military expression: Overcome By Events).

For a variety of reasons, parachutes don't work well for fast RC cars. Slash, Paul Songas, and we here at Team AHR43 went over that very ground not a week ago. What that does leave the RC electric racer with is the OPTION of developing a rear axle braking system for the very fastest cars, e.g., Extreme, Top Fuel Electric and F/C, maybe some of the hot-dog ProMods fall in there too. Anyway, we here at Team AHR43 are looking into a rear axle braking system should we go with a Top Fuel Electric car in RY 2008. Again, to us it's a personal preference about controlling the car instead of just aiming for the catch net.

Anyway, check out the vids. It's not all crash-and-burn like ESPN2 NHRA drag racing coverage - there's some tuning info there if you watch closely. Never can get enough information...

If you are going to get up close you need to use the manual focus. Your slow motion filter isn't up to slowing down the video as much as you are trying to do. It gets choppy when you have exceeded the program's capability. Timewarp available in Liquid 7 or Adobe after effects is the best slo-mo filter out there as it synthesizes the missing frames to make the slo-mo smooth. And above all deinterlace your footage before your final encode. It will sharpen up everything especially motion. You can use dscaler or avisynth both freeware programs to deinterlace your video. The only time you wouldn't deinterlace video is if it were going to be played on an old SD television. Most if not all HD sets have a progressive or non-interlaced mode and all computer monitors are non-interlaces these days. If you want the best results deinterlace. Check out this pic. The top shows one frame of an interlaced video. The bottom is the same frame deinterlaced. As they say one picture is worth a thousand words.

Keep it up the world needs more drag racing footage

I have too master my dragracing skills yet with my FLM Rustler. Very hard to control that thing at high speeds. I do use brushless and braking is programmable. You can lock the tires in a instant if you wanted too. The trick is to use a motor with a strong sintered rotor. Braking is improved and alot stronger.
