The Futaba GY240 is the one recommended by Heli-Max. Having said that i am sure there are some folks out there that have wired other gyros into their helis. I did some research on the GY240 over the weekend. It seems to do exactly what it was designed for and has gotten many good reviews.
Tower Hobbies is selling the GY240 for $119. That seems to be the same price as the competition. You will also need an electronic speed control (ESC) Tower Hobbies has the Electrifly C12 for $24. Then you'll need a couple of Deans plugs and some plastic wire ties.

Like I said, I just ordered mine this weekend, so if you'd like I'll let you know how it installs and how it works.
Look around on the internet, you may be able to find a really nice price for everything you need.

Maybe do a pictorial if you can of the install. Step by step with pictures. If you can. I think it would be greatly appreciated.

I might be able to do it this comming weekend. I have to do some work on my Mustang. If I can finish the Mustang on Saturday, I'll do the gyro install on Sunday, after church of course.
I don't mind taking pictures of the work, but I have no idea how to post it to the web site.
If you guys can figure that out and let me know, I'll do everything I can to make it happen.

Thanks.

I hope I can get everything done on the Mustang. I have to do oil, filter, plugs, trans filter and intake and exhaust gaskets. I should be able to get done in 3/4 of a day. It has to take priority this weekend, no matter what. I have a car show near the end of the month and this will be my last free weekend till' the show.

I'll keep you all posted.

Ted

Hey fellas. I did this mod is is probably one of the best things I could have done. It makes flying so much easier because you don't have to focus on controlling the tail as much as going stock. Here is the link from Heli-Max that gives a PDF step by step. It's pretty easy to do and only took about 30mins tops.

I got all the parts needed to perform the Gyro upgrade. I may stay late at work to install it. I won't be able to fly though until Friday. After I ordered everything I had a crash and I need to replace my twisted and bent tail boom. Whats the point of putting all these parts on if the tail boom and tail motor mount are outta whack. So, once I get the tail boom and mount installed I'll be ready to fly either Friday or Saturday. I'll snap off some pictures of everything I do to post on the forum tomorrow night.
Take Care.

Well, I installed the gyro today and took some pictures while doing it. Unfortunately my photography skills aren't all that great, but here are the pictures:

Down the road, I'll get some ultra deans plugs, better heat shrink and solder it all together again. Just so you know, I used the aligator clip as a heat sink to keep from melting the wires.

I flew the heli this after noon. The first flight was great. During the second flight the tail began to wag, so I spent that battery trying to adjust the wag out of it. Third was pretty fun. I had a lot of fun with a sustained/under control hover for about 2 1/2 minutes. My best time so far.
I hope this helps.

Ted

Nice pics. I am glad you posted them if for no other reason then for me to see the alligator clip for heat transfer. Now I know what people refer to when mentioning this.
A suggestion, if you have a dremel tool or similar, take the heat sink off of the main motor and trim the top of the fins so that it will slide up into the frame and expose the slots in the motor. Or, cut the bottom front off to expose the motor slots. That should help the motor run cooler. You will need to get a tube of heat sink stuff (not the right name but Radio Shack has it and would know what I am talking about).
It will be interesting to see how much faster you advance your abilities by using a gyro vs. no gyro. Keep us posted as you go along and let us know how you feel it helps you improve.

Unfortunately I don't solder all that often so it still takes me a while to heat things up. When I was
