These are a few pictures that I took during calibration of two video cameras for a 3D PIV system being used at NASA for post research on the Deep Impact mission of July 2005. They were shot on 8/1 of this year, and were part of a 90-some image capture while the work was being performed.

The woman in the pictures is wearing safety goggles and dropping some fine sand through a laser sheet being projected above the floor of the chamber. The cameras were mounted above the chamber and viewing through glass ports. I was also wearing goggles and as such the laser was not visible to my eyes. These images were tough for many reasons - The exposure was slow, typically 1/3- or 1/4-second, there was no room in the doorway for a tripod or monopod, and also the fact that the camera was able to focus on the sand contacting the laser sheet, but I was not able to see it until the image was taken. (Unlike compact digital cameras, a digital SLR does not have a live image on the display during shooting. The image must be viewed through the viewfinder.)

Anyway, without going into a bunch of detail on the work, I just thought some people would enjoy these pictures. I can answer questions if necessary.

So the sand is actually bouncing off the the lasers? I thought lasers where only beams of light that could not be "touched" or "act on other objects" other then heat them up.

Help me understand lol

I think there is a sheet of laser light and when the sand passes through it it lights up, just like when you put a laser light or torch on your finger or in your mouth.

Then God said let there be light..... illuminated sand!!! lol

Yes, the sand is passing through the laser sheet. In a couple of the shots, there is some sand bouncing up from the bucket underneath.

In this shot it actually looks like the sand is bouncing off the light.
