Greetings to All,

Noob (Dave) here with permishion from the Little Mrs. to purchase a kit (want to build). I own and am flying one of the Hong Kong Esky HBK2 units at present. It took a month of fixing and setting up to get it working acceptable and way too much $. The LHS Dude (a 20 year heli guy) said the type of heli I get doesn't matter. I don't see to many HDE helis around and want your intput please. I am a sport flyer at best. Hovering, and casual, realistic scale heli flying and landing around the house is what I'm about, have no interest in 3D. The XL and S models are about the same price here in the US, one is metal frame and one is plastic. Everything else looks the same, correct? Thanks for your input. Dave

Hey Dave,
I am not an expert by any means but I can give you my opinion and experience. I dont think it really matters which T-Rex you buy. They are all good quality helis. I just got the 450SA and I am completely satisfied. 7 battery packs in the last two days and no crashes. I took 2 1/5 days to put it together and I am awed by its stability. I bought the kit for 212.00 from myrcsupply.com and then a few S285 servos anda 3400 on the tail. Gyro has to be Gy401 and get as many batteries as you can afford. I have three and plan on buying two more on payday. I would like to have about 7-10 bats so I can fly. This is such an addicting hobby. Best of luck with your upgrade and keep us posted.

oh by the way,
running the DX7 and the AR6200 which has an extra antenna which is pretty cool. I wish the connectors were on the end instead of straight up though.

Dave.......... I bought my RTF setup from helihobby.com.......500 bucks for a XL CDE with DX6 and servos, gyro.....the works. I had a small issue with shipping on a Replacment ESC but when it was all said and done.....a good deal and as long as you deal with the right person at helihobby, they will treat you good.

If you are 100% sure you want to stick with helis for the long term, then I would suggest you get an SE or SEv2. The metal parts aren't just 'bling'. They are strong and precise, and will last a long time.

The other models S, SA, XL are all good choices also, just not as good as the SE. I would go for the S or SA over the XL, but that doesn't mean the XL is a bad heli. I do like the frames on the S series better, however...

The only reason to get an HDE would be if you already had a transmitter which was not CCPM capable. Since your radio is CCPM capable, then you should go with that IMO.

I currently own 1 450SE and 1 450XL CCPM. The XL is fully upgraded with the exception of the frame (Which will be upgraded to the CF SE frame at some point, making it 100% SE). Both fly very nicely, but the SE is a bit smoother and lighter. I do prefer it over the XL.

I used to have an XL HDE which was completely stock. It flew quite well also.

If you do get an XL or S series, you should go ahead and get the metal belt pulleys and install them from the get go. The plastic pulleys are the only real 'weak link' in the whole system. They have a high failure rate, and having one of those fail in mid flight is no fun, let me tell ya!

Whatever you decide, you will be SHOCKED at how much better it fles than your current heli. The first time I flew my first T-REX, I put my BCP on a shelf, and it still sits there to this day with a bunch of dust collecting on it

Good luck!

I still run a HDE and TO be honest havent stripped one servo which I cant say the same for people I know that run CCPM, I guess this is the advantage, ive also found the plastic frames really strong, I have mashed mine into the ground at speed several times and only replaced the frame once

Why would you recommend to somebody that has already stated that they are not into 3d a machine that is built mostly for 3d? Whats the point of having parts that are designed to take more abuse (not to mention heavier) than their composite conterparts (like those on the SA). The price difference between an SA and an SE/SEv2 is not something you can shake a stick at, especially if you are only going to be doing scale flying.

I'd recommend the S or SA. The older XLs and HDE are great too but remeber that Align has a habit of suddenly making parts for their older helis scarce. The S & SA can use all the parts off an SE/SEv2. Plus you can bag an SA ARF for less than $280, the money you save over the SE/SEv2 can be put towards electrics

Thanks for the reply guys. I ordered the 450S (want to build it) last week. Many words of wisdom, I appreciate them all. Not like 20 years ago, when someone decided to try the hobby, and the only people to get help from was the LHS Dude who just wanted your money or the guys at the flying field. I feel I did screw up by getting that HBK2 before I did more research, i.e. parts availablity...lack of here in the States, vice the Align. Every LHS in the region has parts, and mods for the 450's. Dave

Dave: Did you got a good deal?
Where did you buy it?
How much you had to pay?
Please tell me if that is possible or send me a PM.

I am into the same and I'd like to have a great deal on a Trex SA

Thanks

Alfred.

For the record (because I love mine) you can get HBKII parts at Helidirect and RChelicoptershop.com for pretty cheap.

I love my Trex, but I still have fun with the HBKII and the Belt CP. I can fly the HBKII in the house, the Trex flat out destroys crap when I fly it inside.

I do intend to keep the HBK2, don't know about flying it in the house though...it's not a super micro or a Fisher Price toy. I suppose if I get it trimmed and balanced REAL good, I do have a spare bedroom...would have to keep it within a 4' radius.
