Hi ,
I am putting a DA 100 w/ stock mufflers on my yak genII. It is on a new fuse.
Anyway, do I have to baffel the engine top and bottom of the cylinders? just top?
How much of the bottom of the cowl did you cut up?
any pictures?
Do I have to open the cannister area to increase the airflow to cool the engine?

Jim

Hi Jim,

Check this thread out on our forum http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4809120/anchors_4809953/mpage_1/key_baffle/anchor/tm.htm#4809953
You don't need to open the bottom of the fuse as if you were to use cans.

Hope this helps,
Reza

Hi Rezagh,
How is this configuration for the top of the motor?
I will raise the lower baffelle to half way up the motor.
Did you cut alot of the bottom of the cowl or estimate 2.5 times and cut that much??

Thank you for your help.

Jim
This is in the original fuse.
I am installing a DA 100 in the new fuse.

WOW! Jim this seems to be alot of work. Good job! Howmuch weight have you added?

I would say the opening 1to2 should suffice but bigger the better ofcourse!
I did not cut a lot of the bottom but I did open the square pan.

For a DA100 you are more than good!

Try not to add much weight because you are right at the nose and might have a hard time balancing.

Good job. Please post some pictures of the completed baffling and couple of words how you did it in that thread for others to see.

Regards,
Reza

The materials used are 1/8" light ply for top plate. 1/64" aircraft ply for curved ducting. For the bottom plate I am thinking 1/64th" with 3/4 oz fiberglass cloth. I do not believe much weight was added. I have a motor mount machined for me but you can run the top plate off the top of the engine box. I do not have a scale at the house at the moment.

Now here is the question of the hour. I can attach a plate to the muffler with silicon and that would match the cutout of the cowl so the whole cylinder is exposed to the opening of the cowl. Do you think this will provide sufficient cooling? Should I block more of the cowl opening?
I also cut the front of the cowl just in-line with the spark plugs to allow air to cool the top of the cylinders
For the bottom plate I cut out the muffler slot and silicon the wood in place. I use some cloth to stiffen the ply.

Here is my choke setup. I only use some red nyrod, a piece of wood for the support, one screw 2-56 to use as a knob and Sullivan quick link for 2-56 threaded rod. This allows you to bring out the choke anywhere on the plane and the person holding the plane can operate the choke. It is a lot lighter than a servo. I used a little glue where the nyrod went through the fuse.

Jim,
How about spending a little more time sanding those parts! Geez, some people might actually look at this thread! The Quad State Crew doesn't want any bad raps here!

How about a picture with the cowl on from the front so we can see where in the slot the engine sits, may help determine if the lower baffle is required. Besides thats a DA not a BME that requires a lot of cooling.

Mike? Jim S? Mike Jr ?

Great Job Man! Looks really awesome. Is there anyway you can have a little more space on the bottom baffle. It's really over kill for DA. I am running some live testing and in flight information on engine temp. I will give you guys more details hopefully this weekend.

I have been doing it on a 3W 212 4 cylinder that is for a friend of mine but will do it on my DA100 this weekend if I get a chance.

I can tell you that his rear cylinders were running 100 degrees hotter without baffling, say 330-350F without and 230-240F with so I know how effective baffling can be and yours should kick ...!

Regards,
Reza

Yea, I thought the master taught you how to sand, I guess after losing a very nice plane ( Lots of sanding ) it just was not worth your time anymore

He will sand it when he sure he doesnt crash it LoL So he will prob fly it 10 to 20 times then decide to pretty it up... sand things and add the better graphics maybe a new landing gear then the very next flight BAMMO out jumps the High tention wire tower.
