Hey Mike,

Hope you guys had a good festive season and all. I'm rocking on this thing but yea progress is still oodles slower than I would have liked it to be. Got the bottom all done last night and started on the top and fuselage, think I finally got the trick with the Ultracote under control but dang I wish this stuff would have worked with the windex trick like Monokote. I tried all kinds of funnies though and there's no way. So yeah now it takes me 30 minutes to an hour to apply one stripe or trim piece instead of 5 minutes.

I'll battle on tough. Get my bird all pretty and such. Haha

For just that reason I use Ultra for the main colors and Mono for the trim.

If I had the option of Mono make no mistake I would have gone that route definitely. O well, such I life I suppose.

I started to color trim my all-white ARF version last night, and hope to post some pics today. I went to my LHS yesterday and asked about getting a YS 1.10 on order. They said they were out of stock from the supplier and wouldn't have any until late in February. Now I'm thinking about a 2 stroke, besides the fact that the 4 strokers seem to be weakening the front end of this thing due to vibration. Isn't the OS 1.20AX a little much though for this plane? I live at sea level, so thin air isn't an issue. In fact thick, humid air is more of an issue.

Nah OS 1.20 AX is a good bet. Otherwise maybe a Saito 1.25 (What I'm putting on mine). The Saito doesn't need as much nitro to run nicely as the YS from what I've read and the Saito's throttle response is definitely oodles better then the 1.20AX 2-stroke btw.

I have both the YS 110 and an OS 120 AX. I love the instant power response of the YS but the 120 AX is a tad stronger. I can swing a 17-6 prop with the 120 ax plus I run 10% nitro versus 20% in my YS. Don't discount the 120, it is a tremendous engine and by far the best value going I think for this size power plant.

We had nice weather today so I went to the field with one of my other planes, a Combat Gremlin. I told everyone I'd bring the Fusion tomorrow to show it off even though it's not complete (engine and radio). I was going through the hardware pack tonight and needless to say, it was a bit confusing. The ARF instructions don't identify any of the bolts or screws. I figured out most of them, but there are a few I'm still not sure about. Oh, and the wing alignment pins, do you glue them into the fuse or one of the wings?

Hey just ask away if you are confused on any of the hardware. The wing alignment pins should be glued into the fuse so that they are centered. Thought the manual said that. I do know some glue them into one wing panel instead but I like them in the fuse.

Didn't get it finished today, the weather was too good here, went to the local field instead. One of the many benefits of southern living! (I grew up near Ft. Wayne, IN)

hi guys, i bought the 52'' fusion last year, that plane absolutly rocked, it did every thing great, unfortunatly after 250-300 flights i had to retire it---fuel soaked fuse---several repairs to the wings(whats up with the wing tube sleeves being only glued to a balsa rib with no reinforcement?)---rehinged surfaces(too many tail touches)---broken props---bent gear legs. even after a year of very hard abuse i still loved this bird(just wished it had a one piece wing and ultracote), maybe i'll buy one of the next batch arf's and glue the wings on.

matt.

Gluing the wings on is always an option. Many folks want the two-piece wing so this way you have both options. Plus gluing the wings flat onto the fuse is much easier than sliding the wing into a giant cutout on the fuse. Advantages are the fuse is much stronger and no glue mess all over teh wing after putting the wings on. Plus the wings are automatically centered!

They are being built right now. We will have some with the same previous scheme, some with red/white/blue scheme and some in solid white so you can trim out yourself. We are shooting to have these late March.

Theres going to be a lot of stress on the wing guide tube in the fuse, I hope that area is reinforced(at least more than just balsa). The ARF comes without any hatch cover, guess you have to make your own. I was surprised I needed 2 24" servo extensions for rudd&elev. Lucky I had these unused pair intended for a Double Vision. There was no way to get at the string when using just the rear elevator servo bay, it was up front in the forward bay, had to cut covering to get it and see where the opening was for the wire. Someone should show the factory the difference between "tack" glueing & permanent, I broke the string trying to get it loose from the attachment scrap wood. I ended up fishing( literally almost)the servo wires thru twice, I misplaced the servos in the wrong bays, had to re-do it. So I used fish line tied to a nut to pass the line thru, the nut just falls out the wing opening if holding the plane inverted. All that is left is throttle servo, fin, stab & engine. It seems really light, if it comes in 7 lbs & change, with OS 1.20AX, it will be perfect for hovering all day long.

My 52" Fusion ARF has a noticeable warp to the right. So I guess, I don't have to worry about right thrust. You gotta love not having to shim the engine.

I'm putting together the Fusion 52. It seems very straight forward and easy, just gotta read those instructions. Although like some others I have an issue with some of the hardware ...

Thanks for the help Mike. So, what is this? It was in the hardware package. Is it to replace the missing attach hardware for the clevis's? I think I got all of four screws - not a problem because I probably have enough seting around to make up the difference. If not I can pick some up at the LHS. But, I am confused by this thing ... what the heck is it for?

Thanks,
john

Not sure, but I think that's the connector for the throttle connection at the servo arm.

Yes that is called an EZ-connector on most continents. Eliminates the need for Z-bends really and it's adjustable. Works exactly like a clevis, one end goed through the control horn be on the servo or surface/throttle arm and the pushrod goes through the hole and is held in place with the grub screw. Personally I hate the darn things but I'll admit on something like a throttle they can be a lifesaver...definitely better than a Z-bend there. Wouldn't use it anywhere else however except maybe on a gentle thermal gas bag. Be sure to lock the bolt holding it onto the horn afterwards with maybe a teensy weensy drop of CA or decent loctite, same goes for the grub screw.

Yeah, that's it! I had a brain flatulance (A.K.A. Fart). Hmm, "grub" screw... I've never heard it called that before. Here in the States we call them "set" screws.

DOH!

You mean like this? I use them all the time ... maybe I was just a bit surprised to see it in the hardware pack, didn't dawn on me.

Right well for anyone actually wondering (I doubt there are folks ) work on the Fusion has anything but stopped. I'm so tired of covering now it's not even funny, four weeks from start to finish but we've made it. I still need to do a final heating up of the entire plane and some sealing. I also want to use a teensy bit of CA to just glue on all the sharp points on the trim scheme but for the most part the covering is finally finished. I'm working on learning Coral draw so I can wip up the decals and lettering the vinyl cutters need to do for me so hopefully I can get those done this week also. Started last night on cutting the hinges which needs to be done before I can do a final shrinking of the dress. Landing gear's still at the painter so I'm in no rush, I'm not gonna rush my mate to get those done cause he's doing it for free.

But ya, apart from all that I got everything basically read, motor/servos/hardware/etc. Still can't believe I used 8 and a half rolls of covering to do this bird, with only small pieces left over.
