Well i've been wanting to build a really cheap plane that i don't have to worry about beating up, so the other day someone at the field showed up with a homemade spad, it was all made out of cardboard and other stuff, and it flew reasonably well, at the time i didn't think anything of it but when i got home i started thinking about making one of these, so i figured this would be a good place to post! So i have a few questions about making one,

-what matierials are most common and cheap
-where to get plans to make one, i don't really care how it looks (just so it flies) i want something i can put an os 40la in,

thanks in advance

acarter - check out www.spadworld.net - lotta good info there.

Source for coroplast could be election signs or check with some of your local plastic supply shops. Runs roughly $13-15 a 4x8 sheet.

put on your fastest tennis shoes and hop on down to your local gas station or liquor store with a pair of dykes. many off the most common outside signs are coroplast as are political signs. you can swipe em if your quick just kidding but often they will let you have em for free when they are done. white is the most common color and also seems to be the stiffest. peel off any stuck on letters and acetone off ink and magic marker (unless you like the pattern!). after the next election you'll never need any more the guy that refined the PBF is a total rc nut and flys better asleep than i can on a good day so build it just as his plans show and you won't go wrong. they fly VERY DIFFERENT than conventional planes so read up on technique... there is plenty of that on this web site so just search pizza box flyer. have a ball with it, many people love em. the funniest question i ever saw on pizza boxes was "has anyone ever landed one of these intentionally?"

All Lowe's (or other hardware stores) has is small coro "FOR SALE" signs. Look in the yellow pages for a sign shop or Regal Plastics. When you go to the sign shop, tell them you'd like some 4mil coro to make an airplane with, and show them a picture or two of some SPADs. Otherwise, they will think you are making signs out of it and stealing their business. It will make the difference between spending $12 for a 4'x8' sheet, and $80-$120 for the same thing. Also, ask them for some scrap sign vinyl to trim your plane with. My local guy has bins of it he throws away, but will save some for me.

Let us know how it comes out for you!

Blue skies,

DL

P.S. Asking for old signs at your local convenience store will bring less trouble than "absconding" with them, and if you make them a plane from it, they'll usually save you signs just to see what you'll build next!

the plastics supplier are the best but you might just order some from Harbor Sales. You will need to research the dimensions you want for a specific plane and which direction the 'flutes' should run on each piece.
Good luck. I got my first coroplast by ordering from Harbor, having it shipped to San Diego, and from there it came to La Paz on a motor yacht and I off loaded it in the marina!!!!

ok, so i got the good old trusty yellow book out and wow, there was about 20 sign shops, so i called every single one, and all but one had corroplast. The place they really differ is the prices, i had a price range from 12 to 48 bucks for a 4' by 8' 4 mm thick sheet of corroplast, so i should be going down to the shop some time this week to pick some up, I'll keep everyone posted on the build

See if you can get some 2mm as well. The RNAF wing is really the only way to go. It's such a better airfoil than a 4mm one IMO. I found a sign shop supplier in my area that I buy from, you might look for one of those too.

Good Luck

Well, i actually just went down to the shop this morning, so i probably won't be getting 2mm, and plus i don't think that shop had any 2mm, because they didn't ask me what size when i picked it up. What about doing an airfoil with 4mm, weight shouldn't be an issue, because i'm using a os 40la

Just to make sure we're on the same page, I assume you're an experienced flyer? A pizza box is not for a beginner. It is absolutely a blast to fly, but not something to fly lazy ovals around the field with.

Well, i haven't been doing it for real long, but i would consider myself a pretty desect pilot, I'm not really worried about it, i'm not saying i won't crash it i'm just saying that even if i do, there isn't a whole lot of stuff to break other than the corroplast which i have plenty of

I got the spine done and fastened it, looks great and very strong. I also installed the rudder using wing bolts like they suggested on spadtothebone, and it worked very well. I'm going away this weekend, but when i get back i should get the engine installed, then order the electronics!
