my Ni-Mh flight packs.

it says its voltage is 12v @ 7.0AH.

is this suitable as a field pack?
and how do i charge the sealed lead battery for further use?

depending on the size of the packs you are charging, yeah that's what most people use =)

you either use a wallwart type charger that puts out something like 700mA that is made for it and take it off the charger after about 10 hours. Or the better option is to get a 1.5 or 2 amp float charger, and just leave it on that charger all of the time when you are not at the field. This is how lead acid batteries like to be charged.

thanks mate!

im using it to charge 8.4v......1200-1400 mah packs for my artech cessna.

i was working ok but ive noticed all i get is a flashing light from my peak charger.....but when i put the charger onto mt car battery it works as normal which leads me to think the lead acid battery needs charging.

i got it off a mate and it didnt come with a charger.

is it possible to make up one to suit the lead acid?

thanks in advance

Here's a gel cell charger circuit.

I'm sure a search of the web will find many more circuits.

ive managed to borrow a swallow advance charger and it says it will charge nicd, nimh, lipo and lead acid.
the only setting i can find that may charge the l/a battery says "Pb".
would this be the setting for the lead acid battery?

yeah, that's it =)

I don't think they have walmarts down there, but pretty much any hardware store should have a float charger for automotive batteries that puts out 1.5 or 2A. That is what you want, and then you would want to leave the battery on the charger all of the time except when you don't want to use it =)

Pb is the chemical symbol for lead, from the Latin word for lead, Plumbum.

Most chargers do. You may need a higher capacity batt. to get many charges out of it. I'm using a 20 AH gell cell lead acid. Without enough capacity the batt. may be getting to low voltage to soon. Just for a test, put a voltmeter across the batt while it's charging. You can see the voltage drop as it charges.

if you get a float charger like I was saying before... it will keep your pack full and well maintained all of the time. It's alot better option than any other type of charger for these lead batteries.

As far as charging it with another charger, that would really just depend on your charger =)

Is this a discussion on charging lead-acid batteries, or charging FROM lead-acid batteries.

A "float charger" or battery maintainer is a good choice to keep your lead-acid battery in tip-top shape. These batteries are completely opposite of LiPolys in that they must be kept fully charged for best longevity.

Charging from a 7.0Ah battery, don't expect more than a couple of charges on a 3S 2100mAh battery. It's like fueling up two lawn mowers with 2 gallon tanks from a 5 gallon jug, using a very inefficient gas-powered pump to do it.

A lot depends on how big your batts are. Anything up to 2100 ma, I use a 20 AH gell cell. lasts a couple of flying cessions before needing a recharge. For the bigger batts. I use a 110 volt, 950 watt generator. One of those $150.00 chinese jobbies. Works very well. Always starts on the second pull and is very easy on gas.
