Anyone have any ideas as to what fonts manufacturers use for theit N numbers, other than the military block style?
Thank You in advance.

The FAA doesn't mandate any specific font, though they do require that the numbers be "legible and easily readable" under all weather conditions, etc, from various differences.

For this reason you'll RARELY find one with something like a script font or what have you. It's tried from time to time, but usually the owner gets asked, politely, to change them.

In modeling various scale planes, and being a big aviation photography nut, I've noticed that most N-Numbers usually use one of the common fonts. In fact, I'd say between 5 fonts, you'll cover a VAST majority of scale N-Numbers. They are:

Arial
Arial Black
Impact
Verdana
Times New Roman

With Italicized Arial Black probably being the most common.

Federal Aviation Regulation FAR part 45 specifies the size and location of N numbers

Thanks, Tom...I had forgotten they specified a size as well as the infamous "legibility requirement".

Heading slightly off topic...has it ever amused you to note how FAR out of their way the FAA will sometimes go to give pilots/owners enough rope to hang themselves with? Can they just say "This high, this font, done"? Of course not *heh* They can't just say "Get this information" before flying...it has to be "all information pertaining to the flight"....so that way when that bird strike takes you out, it can be "pilot error" for not checking the migratory bird report for the area.

Thanks you guys. I had Custom Grafix out of Louisiana make up some N numbers for my C182, and they came out exactly the way I had hoped. Very happy.

If you want to fly low, use the small numbers and letters and place them up and down . I guess you can't do that anymore after they made us use the taller numbers
