M.M.,

You've got it. The wheel wells will take a lot of work to make right...I'm about to cut back into my wing to get the mounts right before I glass the wing. I've not used CJ retracts before, but I read through the whole TF 1/7 P-51 thread in the kit builders section of RCU and decided to go with these. That Worry Bird was beautifiul. Where did you get the decals of all the markings? I've been looking for suitable decals for all the nomenclature on the plane. I plan to use masks to make the stars and bars.

This is the first time I've tried anything like this, so I'm taking my time and making it up as I go.

Tim

Oosiksmith,

The marking on my Mustang were a combination of methods. I obtained some pages of data on all the small decals from a guy in Germany if I remember correctly. I can find the diagrams on my old computer, but I cannot seem to be able to transfer them to this one !! I will keep trying. There are many more markings than you would normally see on a full size..............Not all the planes had anywhere near all of the stencils it seems !? When I had selected the small decals I wanted to use, I scaled them and sent them off to a small decal marker here in Australia. I could give you this guys address, but I don't know if he would still have them and the scale would be wrong..could be adjusted I suppose. Let me know. I clearly remember how hard they were to apply !! %$#@#$%

The " Worry Bird " , I drew on paper and passed on to a local vinyl sign writer and the Stars and bars were painted using masks.

I will try to pass on the small stencils marking sheets as I said, but I think email would be easier for me providing I can recover them. Maybe someone else can provide you with the data ?

Cheers,
Merlin Man.

M.M.,

Thanks for the effort. I was hoping I could find a company that already had done the decals up. You'd figure with all the P-51s floating around out there it would be easier to find good decals of all the writing on the plane. I've already started making my own to print on decal paper from my computer.

Below is the image in its original context on the page: www.lancastermuseum.ca/engine_curtiswright.html

Rolls-Royce Merlin -224

The Battle of Britain was won by the RAF's Fighter Command and the air war then taken to the Nazis by Bomber Command. None of this would have been possible without one common factor -the Merlin, an engine that is said to have won the war. Of the 160,000 Merlin’s manufactured, 60,000 were produced by Packard in the USA.

The Merlin's first flight was also that of the Hawker Hurricane. The engine went on to power the Spitfire, Mustang, Whitley, Lancaster, Mosquito, Halifax, and many others.

The sound of the Merlin evokes great emotion to those who appreciate the sacrifices made by the aircrew of these World War II aircraft.

Specifications:
Manufactured by: Packard Motor Company
Power: 1640 h.p. @ 2650 r.p.m.
Cylinders: V-12; gear driven; liquid cooled
Displacement: 1647 cu. in.
Weight: 1450 pounds
First manufactured: 1935

Hi Spitmad ( Alan ),

Those flying shots of your Byron are magic, especially with the 4 bladed prop. Is it still flying ?

Cheers,
M.M.
