I have just ordered one of these 1/16th scale RC Tiger Tanks. It comes with all metal gear boxes. Any comments on these tanks would appreciated. I did notice that the gun mantlet is backwards(vision ports on the wrong side) hopefully I will be able to rectify this.

ya heng long versions are noted. there is a mantlet part you can buy and take your tank apart and replace it. dunno where off hand. also the comanders hatch is wrong from what i have heard. im not a percision nut so if it aint physically broke, i dont plan to fix it.

Almost. I believe the screws wont line up (easy fixed), also the LED in the mantlet (the "as-you-fire" LED) only has short leads, so you either wont be able to see it, or will have to extend the wires to fit its new position.

I will switch mine tomorrow, list the effort it took and photos etc of the differences etc.

Pzrwest, I bought the same tank in desert camo. from Matotoys. I took it to one of our forest preserves and ran it over dirt and some short vegatation with no problems getting stuck. But after two days of owning it, the left side track began to separate. After looking into it, one of the holes in a track link broke and can’t hold on to the connecting pin, so I ordered a set of replacement tracks for my HL Tiger I and while at it, I ordered a set of tracks for my HL Pershing just in case. I figured in the long run it will be cheaper to buy the Pershing’s spare tracks now along with the Tigers and save on shipping costs.
P.S. How do you attach a photo to this forum?

Pzr,

Mato carries the 'fixed' mantlet/gun bbl. Or, you can fix it your self (do a search on the RC Tanks forum for "Mantlet", lots of threads on fixin' it) by:
1) remove the topdeck from the hull, best done with treads off.
2) carefully unplug antenna and long connector between circuit board and connector on top deck.
3) un-do 3 screws in black turret ring to remove the turret from the deck ( the wires to the headlights will be a problem. I cut mine and inserted W.S. Deans plugs, so I could just unplug the lights.) unscrew the little square circuit board on the deck (top of hull) and the long female connector. Then you can easily remove the turret.
4) Take out the 5 screws which hold the turret bottom to the top shell. when you do, the gun (black part) and the mantlet/bbl will come loose and the spring between the gun and the turret top will fall out (if you look at the turret top, you will see a circle molded in the turret top where the spring goes. there is a flat spot on top of the gun. easy to figure out when re-assembling).
5) watch out for wires breaking at the solder joints and re solder them as soon as you break one, so you don't forget wher it goes.
6) note the orientation of the gun, remove the two small screws (one on each side of the gun) holding the gun to the mantlet assembly.
7) gently pull the gun off of the assembly.
8) unscrew the two screws in the mantlet assembly and seperate the back piece (with the L.E.D.s) from the barrel and mantlet front.
9) remove the L.E.D.s from the back piece by pulling off the hot glue holding them in. ( the machine gun LED is the one closest to the barrel. The warning LED is the other one. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the Loader's hatch (where the switch for the gun is) and mounted the Warning LED there.)
10) flip the mantlet/ barrel assembly over, so the two little holes in the mantlet for the gun sight will be on the left side and the machine gun LED (and the warning LED if you leave it there) will be on the right side when reassembled.
11) put the back piece back on the barrel/mantlet assembly. note that the screw holes and LED holes DO NOT LINE UP.
12) Mark where the new screw holes need to be,on the back piece, and re-drill them.
13) mark where the new hole(s) for the machine gun LED (and the warning LED, if you keep it there) need to be in the back piece and re-drill it/them. If you choose to move the warning LED, now is a good time to fill the old hole in the mantlet front with body putty.
14) place the back piece back on the mantlet front/gun barrel assembly and re-install the two screws in the new holes.
15) re-install the LED(s). I backed the machinge gun back a bit and placed a short section of cocktail straw over the led, glued that assembly into the hole for the machine gun, and then reinforced with body putty. Used plan old Testor's plastic modle glue.
16) re-attach the gun and re-install the screws on each side of the gun.
17) put the elevation spring on the molded circile in the turret top shell (it should be a squeze fit, but alittle hot glue sure makes things easier). Place the gun/mantlet assembly back on the mounts in the turret top shell, making sure to put the elevation tab on the back of the gun inside the elevation motor assembly.
18) check wiring is routed through the big hole and re-attach the turret bottom.
19) place turret back on the deck (top shell of hull) and re position the black turret ring on the three posts (it will only fit one way) making sure that the teeth on the turret ring mate correctly with the gear wheel on the turret traverse motor assembly.
20) remount the little circuit board and the female connector to the deck.
21) plug the long connector back in to the female plug and plug the antenna (black wire) back in. Now is a good time to wrap some electrical tape arround the antenna wire plug connection. Not too much, remember you will probablly be taking things apart again sometime in the future.
21b) optional, but,,,, attach battery, turn on xmitr, turn on tank, check all functions (turret traverse, gun elevation/depression, machine gun, gun switch and warning LED, fire gun).
22) re-attach deck to hull and re-install treads.

23) send '123Splat' nasty PM about how you screwed up new tank following his directions and how you would like to run over him with a real tank....
24) order new tank from mato and forget about cosmetic mods. LOL, actually, the above works, at least it did for me.

I never was successfull at removing the commander's hatch and repositioning it correctly. You'll have to get help from somebody else on that one.

While you have the turret apart is a good time to fix the pistol ports.

Good luck and have fun.

Splat

Alot of the issues are mentioned and covered in the FAQ on the main RC Tank page
