I just received a Fma Cellpro 4s charger and was wondering if I could use an old car battery charger that I found as the power source. It had an output of 12 volts at 10 amps. Is it safe to connect the alligator clips from the car battery charger to the alligator clips on the Cellpro? I tested the voltage and it stays very close to 12 volts and doesn't move around at all. Can I use this or should I spend some money on a good power supply?

Car battery chargers are a constant current charger. What you'll find is that if you try to connect it directly to the CellPro 4S is that the voltage will be much higher, and the CellPro will give you an error code. If you connect the car battery charger to a 12 volt battery, however, the 12 volt battery will act to stabilize the voltage, and the CellPro will work perfectly. Just make sure the 12 volt battery you're connected to is capable of handling the current selected on the car battery charger.

The way I use my CellPro is to connect it to my field battery (7 AmpHour Battery) and connect the field battery to its charger. The CellPro works just fine in this configuration.

Thank you very much for the info. I could only find one 12 volt battery (7 mah) but that didn't work because the battery is dead. Ill have to get a new battery somewhere.

if you put the battery in parallel with the charger and the cellpro, as long as the battery is not completely dead, that will do the trick. It'll keep the voltage where it needs to be by the battery either absorbing some if it goes too high, or by the battery giving some if the charger can't put out the right voltage.

hehe, I guess I didn't read the whole post but bkdavy already mentioned this

Car battery chargers are NOT constant current chargers. They are usually peak voltage limited/limited current chargers and most will not be good for directly powering your chargers as they usually have highly pulsating DC output voltages often with no filtering whatsoever.

I had an old 300W power supply for my computer sitting around that i modified for around 10 bucks or so. 12v rail works well with my triton plus if you have need for 3.3 or 5 volts you can tap into those rails.
