I am planning to replace the windows with 1/32 balsa, painted blue. If I make that detachable (or omit it), maybe I can get the electrics out the front. Why not have long wires between the Rx and servos?
And juice? How can I power the Rx board and servos without the weight of the 6 2/3 AAA Ni metal hydrides that came with the Cox Micro Warbird? Maybe solder some of those little silver colored things together?

David,

I am curious, what Laumer model are you making? I know that there are two, that are very close to the picture that you posted. Is it the Pushup?

Have you considered going to LiPo's to solve your battery problem? Suggest a two cell (7.4 volts) at 300 ma.

I am making Pushup from the book and a plan posted here. Making and fixing furniture has spoiled me. I had forgotten what real wood working is like. He keeps saying to bend things farther than the wood from my local hobby shop will bend without steam.
I have a two cell lipo, but it weighs 1 3/4 oz., twice as much as the engine, for 800 mAh. It doesn't seem the Rx and servos would need anything like that. 9 volt dry cells are heavy too.

Hi Chuck, Allan Laycock is one of our local SAM 83 guys. He is overseas at the moment but when he gets back I'll ask if has the airfoils.

Thanks for the info on the airfoils. Been busy with grape harvest (lots and lots of overtime!!) on this side of pond, but harvest is winding down down and it's time to resume building. By the way, are you going to join our little Keith Laumer thread and build one?

By the way, one thing good about all the OT I've been working is the extra money: Got on Ebay and bolstered my Cox collection by five more plus one Ok Cub!

Now, I am thinking two watch size disposable Li cells to power the "battery eliminator circuit". One would probably do, but with two I would see a change in voltage long before it stopped working. Do most modelers who do fuel RC use Li polymers? Do they make them in very small sizes? How much power do these things draw?
For access to the electrics, the bottom is to be covered only with paper, so that seems a good possibility. I can put the battery right behind the engine to balance the RC tail.
The aerodynamic compensation made the balsa thin with wrong grain, so I reinforced it with wire.

I am a little concerned about the grain direction of the wood used, especially for the rudder and the elevator. Has anyone else noticed?

Yes, that is part of why I used 1/32 music wire as reinforcement, as well as to connect the parts of the elevator.

Yes, that's a 4 ounce tank side-saddle in there. And yes, of course it's a K.L. design!
The original was an 020 free-flight design, I only have the plans, but no
pix or construction text. The hatch was a necessary mod, makes the wing removable, gives me
access to radio, and the tank if necessary (I always make access to the tank possible somehow,
something always seems to go wrong with them eventually.)
Planning 3 HS81 servos & a 250mah pack.
I see I am going to have to "open up" the elevators to allow more rudder throw though.
