I am slowly making progres on the 104" yak. Here is how it looks so far. The hard part has been figureing out the tunnel and the gear mount. The cowl diameter will be 13". I am designing it for either a 85cc to 106cc. The engine I used for the drawing was a 3W 106 with KS header and 3W cans.

Hey Brent,

I was wondering if you have any tips on changing my wing servo mounts over?

I'm just not sure how to go about it, if you don't recall, I will just mock up the new servo mounts and see if I can figure out what to do. I need to get back in the groove and finish it.

I may just finish it with the current servo mounts, I could easily cut the covering away and do it later, it's white so I can work on the wings and stabs and just make a patch, it's not like anyone would notice.

I haven't changed mine over yet, so I don't have a picture to show you. It is pretty easy to do. Just mount the servo in the mount and place it on the wing with the servo arm in line with the control horn. The back of the mount should be up aginst the balsa stock at the hinge line (if the links are short enough). Install your control links and that will give you the distance ahead of the hinge line for the servo location. Just make sure that the back of the servo mount is parallel with the hinge line so that you have a straight pull with the control horn. One more thing I would do is after you have the 1/4"x1/4" ply mount glued in, drill some small holes centered in the mount all the way around it. 2 holes on each long side and one on each short side should be plenty. Glue in some bamboo skewers through the mount into the foam. This will help secure it into the wing. Run the skewers into the foam around 3/4 to 1". Here is the link to some pictures of my prototype yak with the servos mounted flat.

The pictures are on post #495. The servo should be mounted with the arm towards the front of the slot. In the picture you can see how many screws I used to secure the servo (which attaches to the cover) to the mount burried in the elevator and wing. Use at least 6 screws to secure it. With the cover being large there is a lot of leverage at work.

I hope this helps.

How about some pictures!

Brent

Here are a couple pictures of the servo mount on the prototype. I hope they help.

The big yak is comming along. I am just about finished with the drawings for the laser cutter. I am hoping to get the first one cut and start working on it in september. Once I have the fuse framed I will start on the plug for the canopy. I will be starting on the plug for the cowl soon as well. Here is a peek at the plane so far.

I think I have the new 100cc Yak drawings done and ready to cut. The plane ended up at 106" wing span, length 97". The wing area will be 2060 sq". I am shooting for a 26lb flying weight with contest grade balsa sheeting. That will give it a 29oz wing loading. I have found a place to have the foam parts cnc hot wire cut and have a line on a place for the laser cutting. With a little luck I should start building in october. I will be starting a new build thread for that plane. Stay tuned!
