well its over kill for sure but thats not always a bad thing. The main prob may be wasted power and way overstressing the airframe in high G 3D manuvers, that DA 85 is nuts so throttle managemet would be key. As long as you keep that in mind.... sure it would work, as far as wing loading it would be increased, the net effect of that I am not sure, others at RCU will know.

Gents,

I was looking at the far right picture on page 18 post 448 ( looking at how batteries and rx's have been mounted) and noticed something a little different from my EF Extra 300..

The laser cut lightening holes on mine are cut differently (the top horizontal ply plates on mine have a zig zag pattern adding more strength...possibly?) and some of the crossmembers in the fuse appear to be located in a different location (mine has an additional supporting crossmember if my eyes are correct). Humm... Could it be there is a generation 2 of this plane

My apology if this has already been discussed as I missed it..

I will try and post pics tomorrow.

Shawn

If your are going to use A123's wouldn't if be benificial to run the Kodiak switch. I think that it will help you monitor how much current your battery has used.

Rush, I did look at the Kodiac switch but decided against due to the vertical switch toggle along with the fact that is drains a little power in the off position..

I don't think the Badger switches do but correct me if I am wrong..

Cheers! Shawn

hi guys i'm am building the EF Extra and I got a DA-85 from an estate auction for under 500.00. I was wondering if anyone is using this engine in the EF extra. My immediate concernes are increased wing loading and CG issues. What do you guys think, is a DA -85 a bad way to go ?

Thanks

I would highly recommend against it. The airframe is not designed to be that overpowered.. it is built very light.

People are 3Ding the heck out 26 pound planes with an 85.. on a 18 pound plane it would be rediculous.

By the way Jake. It is good to see that you got #2 up and running. I think when this one expires I will have to get me a #2. These things are just so much dang fun. They even make me look like a decent pilot.

Mine seems to be coming out at 7.125 just to get level flight. I am concerned. I have checked flight surfaces and incedence (wing at 0. elv at 0, motor at 0)and all is ok. So I am not sure why I am having to go so far back. Also having a left wing drop issue.
will be doing more testing over the weekend. Any one else have ideas?

Remember to check deflection as well, the control surfaces should move the same amount throughout there arc of motion, they should always be equal to eachother. = Especially the elevators if they are unequal they will create a yaw moment when to pitch up or down depending on where they are unequal in the throw arc

Regarding the wing drop if it occurs at high speed with a sudden pitch up it is likely an accelerated stall where 1 wing looses lift a split second before the other. This is a characteristic of most aircraft its just something you have to learn to control when you make fast pitch ups.

As fas as your CG did you change the size of your gas tank ? is it more forward than ususal ? As long as it balances at any CG it should fly level once properly trimmed. Try putting your ignition battery farther forward ; with the flight packs set a few inches behind the wing tube . When I had my CG at 6.25 the ignition battery was on top of the motor box and I had 2 flight packs 1 on either side of the rudder servo secured with wire ties.

Have you flown it with the CG that far back ? how was it ?

I hear what you are saying, I have programed my servos to match using the high tech programmmer and they are are perfect match and all geomery is good as well.
In fact most of the time spent building this bird is spent on control set up.

Ah gas tank!!! yes,, I am using my same tank that I had in my 88 yak. A 22 oz vers the supplied 20oz (did not notice the extra tank was smaller). Now I dont feel so bad about being so far back for level flight.
I am at 7.125 right now after benching the CG again. soon as I can get to the feild I will see how it flies

At this point I am just adding weight to the tail until I find the sweet spot. Then I will start moving things around. Last flight I moved everything off the motor box and in to the fuse.
Ounce I nail the cg I find good homes for the gear and dump the tail weights.

Wing drop happens in up lines and hovers. I am laterially balanced. Do I need more right thrust? or maybe a warped rudder? will have to look at that.

Thanks

I was searching threads for Vess prop info & found this topic, only 6250 on a DA50??!! I have 18.4 lb Double Vision(empty)DA50/Zinger Pro 22X10=more than 7K RPM. I've used this prop since new too, might be getting more now. This combo hovers & pulls out just fine, could it be an altitude thing or are you somehow getting beer into the system???

I think I have posted this before, but just in case you have not seen it I'll post again. The best way to properly dial in the CG of your aircraft is the 45 degree line test. The provided CG in the manual is a starting point to get you safely through the first flights. Fine tuning should be performed after the initial flights. The 45 degree line test is used by top competition pilots. It goes like this:
Fly the airplane straight and level at full throttle from left to right or right to left, whichever you are most comfortable with. Pull the aircraft into a 45 degree vertical line and establish this line. Roll the aircraft inverted maintaining the 45 degree attitude. Release the elevator and pay close attention to what happens. If the aircraft immediately drops the nose and begins to dive inverted you are nose heavy. If the aircraft climbs inverted you are tail heavy. Ideally the aircraft should continue to track on the 45 degree line for several hundred feet before slowly starting to level off.

Most hardware stores or home improvement stores (Lowes, Home Depot) carry the bonded sealing washers. Also the specialty hobby hardware guys like Microfasteners carry them.
