They must be getting lighter. Many of the first ones were 18+ pounds with everything installed.

For grins I looked up the wing span of a full scale Extra. There are many variations of an Extra but I found two different wing spans. One was 24' 3" and the other was 26' 3". Depending on which one you use I get 28.1% and 30.4% for this ARF. I haven't been able to find anything on a 300EX which is what this is apparently modeled after.

I had one of the first 10 that arrived in the darkness of night before the first batch even arrived and 1 of the models from the 1st or 2nd batch... neither had foam core wings.

Weights are kind of like rpms

Both of mine weighed within 1/4 pound of eachother before choosing the muffler setup. There are people claiming sub 17 pounds.. aint going to happen. They are going to weigh 17.5 - 18.5 pounds no matter how you slice it.

Sorry guys
I was chatting with Joe about weights and foam wings on the old BME Edge 540..
He has the newer Edge and I have the old Edge.
He is also flying the EF 300 and the above posts were about performance and weight differences of the Edges to the EF 300.

Jake, your honesty (and accuracy) will be greatly appreciated by people who visit this thread. I had the same experience. I weighed two fuses, the heaviest part of the ARF, and one was one once lighter.

My first Extra came out to 17 3/4 lbs w/o a smoke set up or fuel. The engine was a DA50, slimline pitts muffler, Hitec 5955 TG's on all surfaces and a Hitec MG servo on throttle. I had a CF spinner and prop, 3 2600 TBM Li-ion batts, 3 MPI Regs and 2 MPI switches. I followed the set up of a guy i saw online claiming 16 1/4 LBS, I agree its most likely BS. For those who claim 16 ish pounds put your plane on a scale all set up, take a PIC of the inside and out with it on the scale, and post it on this thread. I am building a second extra after the unfortunate demise of my first, I am hoping it will come out at 17 lbs, I switched to an ES CF pipe to hopefully cut some weight.

>>>As a side note ES is making pipes with a steel inlet insert rather than aluminum to hopefully prevent any deformation of the inlet at high temps. Although Ed from ES denies that this is a problem to begin with.

I used Titianium axels, super light wheels, light bateries, CF Spinner and the works... the fact is.. even at 18 pounds with the sqs on this plane it doesnt matter. It flies light and thats just basic math. AT 28 oz wingloading for a plane this large.. thats some of the lowest wingloading you will find.

This plane is almost as big as most 33%ers that come out at 24 pounds. I have one sitting here to prove it. It just has 10" on the wings. and its 6 pounds heavier. No one is finding magic ways to save weight... look how the plane is built, there is no where left to lighten it.

I checked my scale against a calibrated lab scale at work and it was within a few grams. You can trust that anything I weigh and post here is going to be accurate......And I weigh everything. For example I wanted to strengthen my wheel pants because they got weak from being kicked and bumped. The right one was 1.2 ounces, and the left one was 1.3 ounces before the repair. Afterwards they were 1.5/1.6 ounces. These wheel pants are feather light. I would recommend glassing over those ply plates where they attach to the main gear.

As far as how this plane flies at 18 pounds......light.....and awesome. I can't wait to burn another gallon through her this weekend.

my extra is 18lbs dry, no smoke, DL50 on ES comp pipe. Still flys like a foamy...

Mine came in at a whopping 18.75 lbs with everything on it and a DA-50 with an MTW tuned pipe. Mine flies fine. Seems light enough on the wings and still has enough power to get me out of a bad situation.
So pushing 19lbs the plane is awesome. I could take the wheel pants off, take out the pilot/instrument panel and mounting hardware, changes the wheels and tires, pull the spinner off, get rid of one battery and things like that and get lighter........but why. This thing flies just fine the way it is and it is going to stay that way.
