I've got a very small amount and it seems to roll very straight however every time I take it out it's either too windy to get it checked correctly or I end up having too much fun flying and end up "goofing around" for the flight. More often the later but it sure puts a grin on your face.

Just check my Tx settings and it's 10% differential ... if you need the degree I'll have to measure the ailerons.

Thanks Propchief

You confirmed my theory that differential ailerons is needed.
I had a doubt because a friend at the field has a YAK 88" and my impression is that my extra "track" better but his yak roll more axial.

I'll be glad if any one can give me some "start point" about surface deflection, just to compare.....

Thanks
JTF

Hey guys,

HEATWAVE IN THE HEARTLAND in Tulsa weekend of July 24th. We usually have between 80 and 100 Pilots(+ 3,000 spectators), and many will be arriving early for some weekday hucking, get there soon for a good spot! The event is for all big planes, so if it's big and has wings, bring it!
More info. at www.tulsagluedobbers.com

This will be the first event that I will have participated in and will be representing my Extreme Flight Extra

Youtube video of the 2006 and 2007 Heatwave. I cant find the video for the 2008.

Had my canopy blow off in flight the other day!

Later examination leads me to believe one of the screws vibrated loose, and the resultant flutter caused the structure on the other side to fail. It scared the crap out of me at first, as I initially thought I lost either the rudder or one of the stabs. It was a ways out and pretty high at the time. I just kept flying it, and when I got it straight and level, I could see it was the canopy. I landed without any issues, and actually beat the canopy to the ground! It fluttered down like a leaf, and didn't receive any damage from the fall. Fortunately someone watched it come down for me, so we knew exactly where it landed...

Should be an easy repair job... going to try to get to it this afternoon...

That would scare the crap out of me if that happened to me. Glad that you got it down with no problem.

One of my screws vibrated loose too. When the screw finally fell out somebody watching me fly heard a pop which I think was one side of the canopy lifting. I landed and had a little crack to the canopy from lifting only on one side. Fixed it with canopy glue and some same color covering over the tiny crack. Can't even see it. In fact I forgot about it until I read your post. Now I use a little blue lock tite on my canopy screws. Probably not necessary but it makes you paranoid after these things happen. A new canopy shipped is not cheap.

Try using a 10-24 nylon bolt for the canopy. You can drill/tap the existing holes and don't have to worry about them comming loose. I have them on mine and no problems ... in fact the last three gassers without any loosening.

I guess that's why they use Nylon bolts for the wingsless prone to back out ?

I haven't had any problems with the factory bolt and bonded washer.

I'm not sure if that's the reason but they work great. Also the profile of the nylon bolts is about the same as the bolts with the washers.

The outer ones.

Yes, I got the best results with the cables crossed with a 4" SWB offset arm.

You're welcome. I'm still running the old style tail wheel on my plane. Here is a picture of the one on my 110" Yak. Hope this helps.

Put the tail wheel bracket as far back on the fuse as you can and the T bar as far forward on the rudder as you can....but make sure they don't hit each other at each end of deflection. That worked for me. This is the 88" Yak but same assembly.

Well, the inevitable happened, and I experienced a simultaneous lack of airspeed and altitude...

The damage was limited to the canopy, cowl, and motor box, and the top of the rudder. The wings and stabs didn't get a scratch. Unfortunately, it basically sheared the whole motor box off the firewall:

This is my first big gasser, and I'm a little worried about the strength of a repair in this area. The sides of the motor box are continuations of ply pieces that run all the way back past the wing tube, and I'm wondering if a repair will hold up.
I'm considering using carbon strips to 'splint' the pieces back on, and use triangular pieces in front of the firewall as braces. What do y'all think?

I really hate to have to buy a new fuse, because this is the only damage, and with the cowl, canopy and shipping, it will push the cost of the crash to nearly the level of a new airframe...

Fix it !!! If you know a guy who has built kits and done repairs get him to give you tips how to fix it. I did this and was amazed at the advice he gave me. Basically you can double the shear points with new ply and probably glass and /or CF. My guess is that it will add less than a half pound and be way stronger. Getting it straight will be the trick. Again, a kit guy is your best friend right now. He knows how to make straight planes out of sticks.

Easy to fix, especially if you have the original parts to put back into place. Then it's a matter of getting the joints spliced to provide strength. Ask around and you'll find someone out there that can walk you through it.

i think you need to epoxy another front bulkhead over this useless piece of wood and make up a good strong engine box to suit.

Show us a pick of the other half. Also how did so much exhaust oil get all over the engine box?

Wassup?

Between work, my son, and vacation I got out today for the first time in over 4 weeks. Despite the windy conditions I put in 3 good flights. Dialed my expo down from 10% to 5% and it seemed to be just a little shy of rolling completely axial. I'll try 7% next time out. The plane really grooves and I spent a lot of time going from inverted flats spins to inverted harrier. Trying to work them lower! The plane makes it easy and looks really sharp.

James - I have the red/white/blue one so I can't help with the colors. I'm sure a quick e-mail to EF will get you the answer.

John
