Hi:
I am just about to buy the T-rex 450SA ARF version which includes only the T-Rex and a Brushless and Esc $269.99 Package.
I'd like to know if any of you have bought the same package and what kind of components did you use.
Purpose here is to save some money and have a great flying electric heli.
Thanks.
Alfred.

I didnt get it myself but some guys in my club did. they got the algin gyro for them also along with some Hs-65 servos ( well that was supposed to the guy who odered messed up)

they seems to all fly nice, none of the guys can fly them yet, just hovering around a little bit.

Hey try this link. This is the one that I got and it is only 212.00

alfredbmor -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/18/2007 12:18:03 AM)

I forgot to mention that I already have a JR8103 DT heli version which I am planning to use, but I need to know which receiver could do it fine with it.
Another thing that I need to ask is if I need to power the servos and receiver with a different battery pack than the one that powers the motor or should I use a voltage reduction?
Thanks.

They dont post the price until you add it to your card and it was pristine when I got it. I am using a Gy401 gyro and I have the ar6200 rx to go with the DX7 that I already had (and I love it), and I just picked up a JR perfomance mini heli servo set with three DS285 servos for the cyclic and one DS3400G digital servo for the tail. I paid like 150 for all 4 servos. the part number is JRPF300H. I love my setup and in all it was pretty cheap..

212.00 for SA
150 for servos
137.00 for gyro
45.00 for rx
total bill comes to 544.00

Not too bad for a T-Rex...

Get a JR 770pcm or 790pcm receiver. Get 3 HS65HB or MGs get a Futaba 401 gyro and a Futaba 9650 tail servo. Or get the JR mini heli servo set (3 285 and a 3400G) but still get the Futaba 401 gyro. I haven't had any problems with the BEC in the Align 35X or G ESC running the four servos and the gyro.

alfredbmor -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/18/2007 12:30:16 AM)

Are you obtaining the power from the main battery for all components? Sorry but I am new into electric flight. What is the BEC purpose?

C5m7b4 -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/18/2007 12:34:25 AM)

One more question would be how much experience do you have with Helis. I was getting pretty frustrated trying to fly the Blade CP Pro but I wanted to give it one last shot and buy a T-Rex. That is why I went with the SA (price) and that is why I did not buy the most expensive servos out there. The 285 seem to be perfectly good for me. I am just hovering and getting into a little bit of forward flight now. I have 13 flights on this Rex and I love it. I could already barely hover for a while, but with just only 13 flights, I can hover a whole battery, I can do two are three piros at about 4 feet off the ground and I have been flying around my yard. I have gotten good at left and right hovering as well. the T-Rex makes learning to fly extrememly easy if you are anal about your setup.

Good luck and save, save, save, but remember you get what you pay for so dont get some S75 servos or something cheap like that or you will probably be sorry,

C5m7b4 -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/18/2007 12:37:20 AM)

Yep, all components will be powered by one battery. The larger the mAH, the longer you can fly. Be very careful with these things though, they can be dangerous. You need an 11.1 volt with around 2100 or 2200 mAH. Get a good BALANCING charger or get a Blinkie that will balance the cells. there are three cells in these type of batteries and if you overcharge one of the cells, it can catch on fire.

You are going to hook the battery up to the ESC ( Electric Speed Control) and then that will supply the proper voltage to the motor because it has a BEC (Battery eliminator Circuit) or something like that.

Looks like I am following your steps, I currently have the Blade CP pro but this little thing is hard to hover because of a not very much responsive tail or responsive in excess, any way, now I am steping up to a Trex but I will set it up like you, I am not a great heli flier I have 1 month experience and I almost can hover sucesfully my CP pro. I put my eyes on the T-rex because many people in these forums claim that this heli is very much stable and is good for beginners. I'd like to spend a fair quantity of money and have a fun heli, maybe later as my skills grow I could upgrade it.
I am taking notes of what you guys suggest. Thanks in advance. The local hobby shop carries the t-rex I will talk to them to know if I can have a good deal (Under the normal price) or go directly to the internet store that you just recommended, I'd like to know how much do they charge for shipping, that will give me a good idea on where to buy it.

C5m7b4 -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/18/2007 1:56:48 AM)

ground was calculated at 9.50 and and usps was estimated at 17.25. Not a bad deal at all. I had to wait a little longer than I would have liked for it to show up, but it was worth the wait. the first time that I spooled it up, it scared me. Really slowly I upped the throttle and when it lifted off the ground, it came almost straight up. I could not believe it. Just a little bit of trim and I havent touched the settings since except for a minor change in the throttle curves. 13 total flight so far, piros, and a little forward flight. right and left side hovering, but still working on the nose in.
These things are beautiful. Watch the finless videos for the setup and you will be in great shape!!!!

Thanks for the info C5, really is a great deal.
As I can see you are having great fun with yours.
Thanks again
Alfred.

Just my 2 cents but the Jr mini pack is top shelf and the 3400 works great with the Futaba 401.

so far I love it. I have nothing bad at all to say about the pack and it is set at a great price.

Synister -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/18/2007 4:14:29 AM)

I have the SA as well, upgraded from a CP Pro like some of you here . For now I have just hijacked the telebee gyro from my pro and am using it with a hs 81 servo. Not the greatest setup, the tail does blow out if you punch it hard or fly fast reverse. Im waiting on a logictech 2100t gyro and am going to get the brand new futaba 9257 servo to go with it. Its the same size as the 9650, its just a lot faster for the same price. People already using it seem to be pretty content. I also had my first crash on this bird not too long ago and took the opportunity to upgrade to a full-metal tail, see saw, and mixing arms, and aluminum blade grips. The tail, mixing arms, and see saw are supposed to be for the copterx 450 and are pretty good for the money. The blade grips are for the new goheebe phazer 450 and were a steal at $14 including thrust bearings. The only small downside is that these grips take a longer feathering shaft so I have to order those online. I cant wait for my gyro and servo to really complete the package, its already lightyears beyond the pro and with inverted maneuvers around the corner, the new electronics will really come into their own.

KCinNC -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/18/2007 5:57:02 AM)

is the 450SA ARF compatable with other T-Rex parts as far as replacement parts ???

i know there are many T-Rex variants out there....that would be an excellent price for me to start with...just want to be able to get replacements & upgrades..!!

stevennh -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/18/2007 1:30:17 PM)

I have my SA set up with HB65HB's on the cyclic and a Futaba 3107 on the tail with the Align 500X gyro. I have a DX6 with the Rx that came with it. I am not doing any 3D, but this setup works flawlessly for flying around the yard (FF, hovering, figure-8s). The tail is rock solid. I went from a CP-Pro to a Falcon-3d to the T-Rex and have 100's of flights on the SA (and I got it used) with no non-crash part failures yet. Parts are mostly interchangable on the T-Rex's and my LHS has them all. I learned to fly on the Blade and could hover it very solidly. Moving up in size to the Falcon-3d and then the T-Rex just made it easier (much more stable than the Blade). I could not keep the Falcon-3d in the air due to electronic and mechanical part failures, the SA has been a dream.

Has anyone had problems using 15C batteries in the summer? I have four 15C batteries and all of them have puffed up over the last couple of months. I had no problems until the temps went up outside. There are even different brands. I don't seem to have any binding or electrical problems on the T-Rex. I have two new 25C batteries that seem to be holding up fine (so far).

DrDeath -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/18/2007 2:40:36 PM)

I had a Blade CP and got so frustrated I stopped flying it. I have to say it was a piece of crap. I was at my field earlier this year and one of our heli pilots was talking to me and asked could I hover. I told him that I can do it really well on the simulator so he grabbed one of his T-Rex’s and we went over to the heli hover pad. I hovered it about 2 feet off of the ground and went out that following week and bought the 450 SA. I have been flying it since February. I have been doing forward flight, pirouettes, circuits etc and I have to say that is a very very good heli. I finally had my first crash last week with it. I highly recommend going with the 65-MG servos. I dropped the Rex from about 20 to 25 feet and all servos were fine. Anything else would have stripped. I only broke one flybar control leaver, bent flybar, blades and bent main shaft. Only about 30 bucks worth of stuff as the main shafts come in a set with extras. Here is my setup

Stock 450 SA setup (motor, speed controller)
Futaba 401 Gyro (can’t go wrong with this one)
Futaba S9650 on the tail
Hitec 65MG
JR770 PCM receiver (PCM is a must have or 2.4)

Total price was around $550 to $560. For a rock solid heli you can’t go wrong.

I see that you are using a Futaba gyro and servo combo for the tail and a JR receiver, I have read somewhere else in this forums that there is an uncompatibility between these brands (Gyro-Servo). I am planning to use my JR 8103DT Heli version Transmiter radio and also a JR receiver but was confused about using this Futaba Gyro which is very popular as I can see. Did you have any problems with the configuration?
Thanks
Alfred.

DrDeath -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/19/2007 12:28:29 AM)

Alfred,

No problem what so ever. The only thing is that there is a little tab on the servo connector for Futaba that has to be cut off. I have been flying this bird as well as others with that JR/Futaba Gyro setup. Go for it, you will enjoy it. Matter of fact, I had mine out today at the field and got some help making sure that all of my repairs where correct. I actually got it right!!!!

alfredbmor -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/22/2007 4:29:43 PM)

Thanks Doctor.
Now I have two ideas of the Trex setup with a Sport option and a 3D option:

Sport option could go with the following components:
SA version with stock motor and ESC.
Hitec, E-flite or Spectrum servos.
Align or E-flite gyro.

3D Option should contain the following components:
SA version with the stock motor and ESC.
JR digital mini servos.
JR Gyro and servo combo or Futaba Gyro and servo combo.

Sport version for beginners like me, and 3-D version for successful heli pilots.
What do you all think about it?

DrDeath -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/22/2007 4:55:09 PM)

I would advise against using the E-Flite servos, hey are crap on a T-Rex. Spend the extra money and get the Hitec servos. You can get he HB or MG version. MG will last longer, but the Karbonites are better than most. If it wasn't for the fact that I had the 65MGs I would have been either replacing servos or gears after my crash. All three of my may servos on the heli stood up to the crash from about 20 - 25 feet up. Came straight down on the spinning blades. Broke one of the arms and no damage what so ever with any of the servos. Because like me are just learning, the Hitecs will last longer then the other servos. Plus they are pretty inexpensive.

I would go with the Align over the E-flite gyro just because I have read it is a little more stable. If you plan on staying with the T-Rex for a while, I would say upgrade the gyro to a Futaba 401. EVERYONE pretty much uses that gyro, best one for the price.

Hope this helps.

LDGILLS -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/22/2007 5:41:35 PM)

Some of us do use the eflite G90 and servos, and are perfectly happy with them. Me included, my eflites servos have been no probs in the trex, and the G90 has been great.

DrDeath -> RE: Trex 450SA Building, What components? (8/22/2007 6:34:31 PM)

I have seen them strip very easily in a couple of hard landings with helis. I have had them strip easily on small foamy airplanes also. Just speaking from my experience with these servos. I am glad you have had better luck with them then I have and others at my field. But, if you are getting ready to buy some servos, I would personally spend the extra money on the Hitec servos. They are better and stronger servos overall.

I cannot speak personally, as I said only from reading Helifreak and RunRyder forums about the gyro. Again, I would spend the extra money on the 401. Just one person's opinion.
