Do you remember when?

You flew IFR using "needle - ball - and airspeed" ?
And then Sperry came along with their "artificial horizon" ?
And you flew the "range" listening to the a's (dot dash) and the n's (dash dot) ?
And you flew to a homing beacon, or a broadcast station and listened to music while homing ?
And you had a loop antenna with a straight antenna, ala ADF ?
But you had to learn the "frozen loop" procedure for emergency ?

If you remember, THEN,
Dearie, you must be my age or older than I !

I'm 76, aqnd did all that. The hard part was getting a "build" or "fade" of the volume of the signal, before the ADF needle came along.

I solo-ed in the SNJ-5 in 1954..

Hi I am 81 and have been flying since 1945 and my first instrument ticket was on the old A and N circuit. I operated the 29 Palms airport as a satellite to my other FBOs in the mid 1970s and there was still a beacon light route indicator at the field. This one dated back to late 20s or early 30s. Now I fly glass cockpit but I bet I could still follow the dots and dashes. Norm

Hi Norm. We must be the same age! My b-day is 3/21/26. I recall an incident with the A/N bit in my'47 Tcraft, winter of '50-'51, I think Nov. '50 Picked up an air force buddy at Detroit City and flew to Pontiac to see another buddy at a GM school. Hit snow and got in with the "iron compass"!! On the way back, tuned to D.C. radio, and---nothing!! It was a bit hairy geting back, as landmarks were covered with snow, but we made it. Went inside and said I could not pick up radio. The guy turned up volume on a rcvr, and there it was, loud & clear! Turns out I was tuned in to something like 296, and it was at 374. Not sure if I'm remembering freqs right, but--lesson learned--KEEP YOUR CHARTS CURRENT!! It had changed about a year earlier!! Oh, I soloed in Aug, '45. Franklin J-3 with cyl blow-by problems!! Lee

Hi Lee, pretty close mine is July 11, 1926 and Tins's is Mar 19, 1926. In 1947 I was ferrying new Champs from near Boston back to Western Mass and got stuck in a white out storm just a bit below the NH Mass line. I was about to loose all visibility so I landed on a small mill pond in Harrisburg, NH. I had skiis on the Champ so it was a no brainer but stopping the plane on ice with metal skiis was quite a ride. Turns out a school on the shore saw me land and they let all the kids out to see the new fangled flying machine. I still have some of the pix the principal sent me. How I survived to be 81 is a miracle. Norm
