I'm looking at my next plane. Flying the WM Ultimate 40 and really like it a lot. I'd like to give it some company and wanted to move up a bit in size.

I have not personally flown the airplane, but have heard nothing but praise from people who have purchased it. It looks like a winner.

I hope a few people who own one will share their experiences with it.

The Intruder is a Great flying plane. You won't be dissapointed. They are pulling trophies and 1st place wins at the SPA contests. What does that tell ya.......... I fly mine with an OS 91 4-Stroke laying on its side. This is the "preferred" mounting as the carb lines up good with the tank. Adjust a little negative incedence in to the rear stab and you will be very pleased.

Just curious, what does the negative incidence do to improve how the model flies, other than making it climb? TIA

With 0 incedence on the motor, wing, and tail, the elevator needs a good bit of UP trim to maintain level flight. With a little Negative on the tail the elevator will then be trimmed inline with the stab. This has been the case with at least 4 Intruders that I am familiar with.

So, that means you're jacking up the trailing edge of the stab, not the elevators, right? By how much? TIA!

I am currently putting one together. There is a set of incidence adjusters in the stab and I am wondering if 1/2 degree negative would be what you have in mind?

I am flying the Intruder as well. I put approximately 1/2 degree negative in the stab of my Intruder and it seems to be about right.

Crankpin.....most all around here are getting the Intruder from PYRAMID HOBBIES in CULLMAN, AL
Owner is Sid Austin. Sid has a DISCOUNT on it for SPA members His "orders-only" toll free number

I will try to UPLOAD a photo I shot this past weekend at the Bill Johnston Memorial SPA contest in
Prattville, AL of the INTRUDER owned and flown by Chris Tomberlin of Montgomery, AL. He outfitted
it with composite gear mounted on the fuse bottom and wheel pants. Hope I can get it to upload.
Best wishes..........BRUCE UNDERWOOD Guntersville, AL SPA 15

I like the tail dragger mods. The trike is what has kept me from buying one of these ARF's. Any idea what he had to do to convert it to a tail dragger? Also is it still SPA legal in with the modified gear?

Thanks,
Chadd

It must be still legal. I see the SPA sticker on that Intruder on the tail. It is still an intruder even though it has modified landing gear. Under SPA rules, a duck that looks like a duck, quacks like a duck must be a duck. So an intruder that looks like an intruder, flies like an intruder must be an intruder.

Is it worth the extra $$$ to go with the pumped version of the OS91?

RCNXS - The pumper does not seem to add any additional umph the .91. In fact, there are some non pumped OS .91's that are turning out more power than the pumper. I do have a pumper on my Intruder, but there are lots of folks running the std. .91 on the Intruder and they are not suffering from lack of power through the maneuvers.

To the original poster - the WM Intruder 90 is a fantastic plane and an absolute bargin. The center of gravity as listed in the instruction manual is off by quite a bit. Put the CG right on the main gear, or if you need a little more performance in the point roll maneuvers, move the CG about 1/4" behind the mains. The advice on the horizontal stab settings listed by others is good, but with the center of gravity moved back some, I reduced the amount of negative incidence in my stab to about -.25 degrees. 1/2 degree with the CG on the mains will have you feeling pretty happy and comfortable.

For anyone interested in trying some S.P.A. pattern in the novice class.. put the CG about 1/2 inch in front of the main gear (you'll need to compensate for this by flying with some "up elevator" trim or a good 1/2 degree of negative incidence in the stab). This very slightly nose heavy configuration will make the Intruder really "lock in" during the straight flight out, procedure turn, and straight flight back. By the way.. the tendency for most pilots is to let the plane climb as it is going away from us, and let dive when it's coming toward you. In the procedure turn, concentrate on not allowing the aircraft to climb through the 1st half of the turn, and then don't let it dive through the second half of the turn. The next most common mistake is to come out of the turn too soon, which means that your straight flight out is not on the correct heading. Get these maneuvers consistantly picture perfect, and you'll really be setting yourself up for success.

If you're interested in the Intruder for S.P.A. pattern above the novice class, push that CG back or you'll be fighting the plane through many of the maneuvers. One of the S.P.A expert flyers using the Intruder has his CG more than 1/2 behind the main gear to help in the 8 point rolls. Visit the Senior Pattern website at www.seniorpattern.com and check out the 2007 contest results write ups and pictures if you want to get a taste of how much fun we have at the SPA events.

If you're just wanting to great flying pattern aircraft to sport fly with.. you will still have a winner with the Intruder. She's a pleasure to fly!

Is it worth the extra $$$ to go with the pumped version of the OS91?

------------

Since the pumped setup doesn't offer any appreciable power increase (other than letting you peak the needle instead of running it fat to compensate for fuel burn-off), one can buy the standard engine and an after market regulator (Cline/Iron Bay) for less money and reap the same benefit as the more expensive pumped version of this engine. I own one of the pumped versions and one of the unpumped versions using an Iron Bay regulator. No difference except the price. Plus, if something should happen to the regulator, it is less expensive to replace. I also own the Magnum clone of the unpumped FS-91 and intend to use a regulator with that engine also.

If your fuel tank is immediately behind the firewall (not touching solid structure), you can get away without the regulator or pump, but then you do have to compensate for fuel burn-off by tuning a few clicks richer, which does reduce the top end power output slightly.

Those placing the fuel tank back on the balance point (CG) will profit by using either the pumped engine or a non pumped engine using a regulator system.

Bottom line is that if you bought the unpumped OS FS-91, or the Magnum .91, you're still not out of the game. You have the option of using the Cline or Iron Bay regulator system using muffler pressure to pressurize the fuel tank. Not to worry.
