I READ ABOUT THE WIRING, BLACK SCREENS, BROKEN ANTENNA, ETC.

AND TO THIS DATE NONE OF THESE THINGS HAVE HAPPENED AT OUR FIELD, MOST FLY AIRTRONICS,
WE HAVE ONE MEMBER , QUITE OLD, WHO IS ALWAYS MESSING WITH HIS RADIO, HE'S QUITE OLD AND WE ARE ALWAYS
REVERSEING HIS CONTROLS, OR GOING BACK FROM HELI MODE ETC.
NEVER HAVE WE HAD THESE PROBLEMS, THE TEMP. HERE IN FLORIDA IN THE SUN USUALLY BY NOON IS
120 - 140 DEGREES.
WE ALWAYS COVER OUR EQUIPMENT OR PLACE IN THE SHADE, AS IT'S TO HOT TO HANDLE.
WHAT DOES AIRTRONICS SAY ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS..

I've been flying the RDS8000 for over a year now in Hawaii. The temps here vary from 70'f to 90'f depending on what time of year it is and the time of day. the screen on my Tx, goes black if I let the sun hit the screen...and if I cover the screen with a clean towel, the screen stays readable.

Is there a fix for this...?

Soft Landings Always,

I know the black screen problem isn't just Airtronics. I've seen it on all radios, watches, whatever has an LCD screen. Strange though if it really goes black at 70* in the shade. I doubt that a replacement screen would fix it though.

I have the RDS8000 in a Top Flite Stinson reliant and have a flap-elevator mixing problem. When I set up the radio gear I had to reverse the flap throw to get the flaps to work properly,ie, UP,50%, and full. After the test flight we found that some down elevator should be mixed in and following the manual we tried to do it. It appears that with the flap servo reversed you cannot get the elevator down function to work. We reversed the servo throw and changed the control arm on the servo so we could get the full up position and then added EPA to about 68% to get flap from full up to down travel. The problem lies in the fact that I lost the mid function on the flap switch.
I'm thinking that we might have went past the servo limits on throws and I'm now totally confused. This is not unusual-LOL. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a programming issue on my RDS8000 as well...it has to do with the throttle channel.  When the throttle is down, the trim adjustment does nothing.  When the throttle is full up, the trim adjustment works normally.  I've checked everything on the throttle channel I can think of  - centering at 0, epa low = 100%, epa hi = 100%.  This is very strange...is there some other adjustment that might affect the way the throttle trim works?
Regards,
Mike

I think my RDS8000 TX battery is giving out already. I have 2 Futaba's with 8-9 year old batteries which still seem to work fine, and my Airtronix is less than 2 years old. I'm getting about an hour of flight and have to recharge at the field.
In general, I was wondering if 2.4 GHz uses more power than FM. Has anyone tried a NiMH battery or other off-brand in their's?

Well I got my flap/elevator problem squared away this morning. The servo EPA was messed up and wouldn't allow the sevo to travel properly. Zeroed everything according to the manual in the p-f mode and adjusted EPA and my linkage. Seems to be okay now.

As far as transmitter batteries go- I got rid of the original and put in a eenloop from Hangtime hobbies and really like it. I played around on the transmitter yesterday for about an hour and was using it off and on for another hour or so toady. Still reads 10.4 volt. They are a little expensive but ,I think, worth it

You wouldn't be able to post a link to the battery you chose, would you. My batt is dying and I need a replacement. Thank you in advance.

I've got a 9.6v NIMH pack in my RDS8000 and it works just fine.  It uses a standard plug and I found a short adapter for the Airtronics transmitter receptacle.  Keeps a charge much longer than the 800mah standard pack.

My factory Tx battery went bad after a couple of years. I replaced it, and have had excellent service, with a Sanyo Eneloop NiMh battery custom made by Canuck Engineering. The price was reasonable and I received it about 5 days after placing the order. The Eneloop battery has about 3 times the capacity of the original NiCd and holds a charge for weeks or months. Highly recommended!

http://www.canuckengineering.com/new/content/96v-tx-battery-pack-square

Note: I did have to change the connector to the old Airtronics type. You could also use an adapter plug cable.

adamic39, I got mine from: www.hangtimes.com/txpacks.html and it's about a third of the way down the page. They are a nice looking battery.

Thank you all! I might have to avoid Canuck batteries as I am a Los Angeles Kings fan. 

Hi Guys,

I lost my beloved Raptor helicopter last weekend due to what I believe to be this exact failure. Roll control was lost mid-flight and she augered in from about 15m up and beat hell out of herself. I take great pride in thoroughly pre-flighting my aircraft and as a result I have NEVER lost a bird to a failure in over 25 years of flying.

To say I am gutted is an understatement. The helicopter will need a rekit plus a full set of Servos.

Wireless,

Sorry to hear about the loss of your Beloved Raptor...it is always painful to watch a cherished airframe tear itself apart and feel powerless to stop it from happening.  What exact failure were you referring to? I went back and read the last few pages of this thread and a number of issues were talked about...perhaps you can provide more specific details about what happened in your case, and then we might be able to learn as a group what may have happened/what we may be able to do as users of this radio to prevent it from happening in the future.  Again, sorry for your loss.

-Mike

Apologies Mike, I should have been clearer. My failure was that of an orange wire connecting to the back of the gimbal for the right-hand stick in my RDS8000 Tx.

I just spoke to Airtronics in California who confirmed that a small number of early radios are affected by this problem. This rings true as I pre-ordered my RDS8000 combo through Tower Hobbies before they were released so it's an early unit for sure.

I popped the back off my Tx and took this photo. I highlighted the offending wire.

Kind Regards,

Rup

Sorry about your bird going in.  I was almost bitten by this bug.
Just wanted to drop you note on fixing it.  Replace the wire with servo extension(s).  Notice that the little dap of goop placed as a strain relief is very hard.  I believe this cuts the wire like a knife in the radios that have the tight wire issue.  Anyways if you do not replace all the gimble wires be sure to put some silicone or other soft adhisive on there to function as the strain relief so it has some give.
Or do what i did go get SD10.

Again sorry that you lost your heli.

Glad no one got hit/hurt

Thanks for the info parpar1,

I might well replace the wire myself. I guess I am going to be down for a good month plus if I send my radio back to Aitronics in CA for repair as I live in Switzerland. I am a proficient and experienced solderer so no problem replacing the wires for me. I see what you mean about the strain relief. I'll modify that to ensure it doesn't happen again.

I'll look into this - I guess my repair will be every bit as good as that of Airtronics.

Rup

After seeing that picture I pulled the back off my tx and checked my wires. They all have a strain relief with a blob of silicone or sometning to keep it from pulling free. On another note, I realized that since I'm using duel elevator mixing, I can't get my left elevator to work on the fail safe function. That's not good at all. No way do I want to go back to a y-harness.

All radios have strain relief and some silicone type stuff, but that isn't keeping them from failing. You may still want to add a tad more flexible silicone up the wires a bit. And still keep a close eye on it. IMO.
