Low ET....with the 72 MHz systems, there were frequencies for air and frequencies for surface cars and trucks, so the radios were not technically for dual purpose and this was never an issue. With the 2.4 GHZ radios, I don;t think this is an issue, but the surface radios and air radios are not compatible as far as I know. Earlier emails explain they work on different codes or something

Get someone to help you with your new plane. An unbelievable number of people have thing hooked up wrong. And make sure you get up elevator when you pull back on the right stick....

bob

i understand the air vs. surface radio stuff. i have different radios for each. this is just my first plane and high quality stick radio.

Low ET. Go to modelaircraft.org and find a local flying field! Get someone to help you! It is SO much easier!!!

Rockcrawler. When I said we, I mean not me personally. I "supervised". My car co-hort, Craig Kaplan and our service tech Minh did all the work. We''ll be using it this weekend at RCX

For those is So cal, go to my blog and see 10 reasons why RCX might be worth coming to see... ok, I know, I''m plugging this but so? It is indeed something I am very interested in and we are showing the RDS8000 as well as on a limited, non-picture basis, the 10CH mock-up for feedback! So, it is still on-topic..

Zippi - Had an order into Tower and had the same info. I called "Wings & Wheels" mentioned earlier in this thread. As a result, canceled my order with Tower.

You might consider calling them. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the info Harc. When I ordered an extra 8-Channel 2.4GHz FHSS Rx from Tower it was $79.99 and the price today on Towers site is $115.99. Thats a pretty good jump. The TX dropped to $284.99.

You mean it went up, it was $229.00. I'm glad I bought mine when I did. I hope the Rx go back down when the rush to buy them is over.

Truly, we have many dealers. If one is not supplying the stock or price you want, try another

Yep - Tower bumped up their prices. Quick check at Hobby People and they still have the original pricing so I ordered a spare receiver and got a "quick shipment" discount of ~$8. Better hurry before Hobby People increase their prices too (no, I don't work for Hobby People).

UPDATE 2008-Apr-18 - looks like Tower brought their pricing back down to the original $79.99. Gotta love the free market.

Hobby People won't be raising their prices anytime too soon. Their print advertising for the RDS8000 has the system set at $229.99 and the extra receivers at $79.99 street price.

Tower may simply be trying to stave off additional back orders from customers until after the first of May when they'll have inventory in stock and will likely be offering a lower discount. With the RDS8000 flying out the door at $194.99 w/ free shipping to Super Saver Club members, they certainly weren't making much on all of the radios they were selling.

Edit - Page 19 of the July 2008 issue of Backyard Flyer contains a full page ad for the RDS8000 radio system and the 92824 receiver. It has the $229.99 and $79.99 street prices listed. I would expect to hear fireworks before Hobby People considers a price increase on this radio system.

My expectation, however, is that Global Hobby wants to keep the street price low to keep market penetration brisk and keep gaining new users.

OK, I cracked. I saw dork blaster's update that Tower corrected the receiver pricing so I went and looked again. RDS8000s are in stock at $229.99 at Tower again before discounts. I whipped out the Platinum MC and ordered one.

The funny part is that I'm happy with my Futaba 7C 72Mhz system and don't really need to jump to 2.4Ghz. I just think it may be a while before I got the chance to buy an RDS8000 for $194.99 delivered again. Also, my 10 model memory on the 7C is full, so now I can start adding planes to the RDS8000!

Maybe I am a worrier, but with the 2.4 gHz, I think there will be more frequency problems and shoot downs than ever before. When people with a 2.4 get used to just flipping the transmitter on in the pits without worry, sooner or later there will be a brain lock up and flip on a 72 mHz the same way. I had to argue to get 2.4 gHz pins for our field.

The other problem last year was that people were bringing out their new micro helicopters etc and turning on the radio without pins. They just assumed they were on frequencies other than 72 mHz. I was checking the controls on a plane last year before take off and it was acting squirrely. Fortunately, I shut down the engine to investigate and some guy with his helicopter was on the picnic table playing with his heli on Channel 18.....and I had the pin.

The trend is the 2.4 gHz, the dam has broke and this is what most people will be flying in 5 years.

Yep Bob - the AMA brought up this very issue more than a year ago AND strongly recommended that PINS STILL BE USED! Surprised that you had to argue for that. I'm trying to remember how much pain was felt when we switched to narrowband FM, we survived however. Technology marches on! Someday we'll fly our models using only telepathy? [)]

I'm already going to indoor flying events where sometimes I'm the only pilot still on 72Mhz. I've been amazed at how rapidly spread spectrum radios have taken over at the clubs where I fly. I actually consider myself a late adopter. I'm glad I waited for the RDS8000 to come along though. I think it's the right fit and the right value for what I personally need in a radio system.
