There a number of ways used to design a good Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum system with various timing techniques to provide a proprietary, solid link. We aren't engineering the radio here on the forum (that is a darn good thing, too, since we would never get everyone to agree, and the product would never get to market!)

FYI.....JR uses single conversion 72 mHz FM receivers while nearly all others have been dual conversion. They worked just fine. The Airtronics 2.4 gHz FHSS solution clearly works extremely well.

Lee I don’t question that the Airtronic RDS8000 is as good if not better then the other 2.4 Ghz radios on the market. I know we are not trying to engineer the system in this forum, it is already engineered, and very well it seems. But I still would like to know how many times per second it hops. I cannot believe that this little piece of information is a trade secret. After all Futaba has no problem stating to the world that there Fasst system hops every 2 milliseconds. I’m curious. Am I the only one?

BTW between my last post and this one I ordered an Airtronic RDS8000 from Tower. There are just too many good things being said about this radio to pass it up. But I’m still curious.

Can you hook the RDS8000 to a Futaba 8uaf in a trainer configuration with the 8uaf as the master?

Bob, you might not be the only one who is curious. Maybe you are.

Either way it's not particularly relevant info, IMHO. If Futaba hops faster or slower than Airtronics, does that alone make one system better or worse than the other? Of course not. RF Engineers will make arguments for either, depending upon the rest of the system. Just because Futaba stated it, doesn't mean it's useful. Sometimes product marketing folks like to toss around technical specs in their promotional literature to fill up a page with fodder. FHSS has been around for 5+ decades. Not much new being invented for our hobby, in reality. If it's relevant, I'm sure Mike will post something. If not. don't worry. Enjoy the radio!!

Nope. For one thing, Futaba cycles Ail, El, Thr, Rud while Airt cycles El, Ail, Thr, Rud. One of those little things..... [)]

I was looking at the 928242.4GHz receiver I got in and the antenna's are not as long as I thought they would be. Does anyone have any pics of the installation of the receiver in their plane? I normally mount my receivers in the middle of the fuse but it looks like the two antenna's will need to be mounted on the fuse side. I'm just trying to get an idea of how I'm going to mount the receivers in two of my planes.

Zippi,
Here are my pictures from my review of this radio. This installation is in a Kaos 60 built from RCM plans. let me know if there is anything else you'd like to see on this.

Ken

RCKen,

Thanks for the pics. It's hard to tell but it looks like some sort of tube is epoxied to the fuse side and bottom and the antenna is ran through and then held in place with tape.

Zippi,
Yes, sorry that I didn't mention that. I covered it in the review but forgot to mention it here. That is simply antenna tubing cut to hold the antennas in place. The two antenna elements need to be kept at a 90° angle to each other. I found that using the tubing helps maintain that position. Then a small piece of painters tape holds it all in place so it won't slip out.

RCKen,

Thanks for the info. Is there any distance requirement on the antenna's as to how for apart they can be. Can one be on the left side of the fuse and the other on the right side as long as they are 90 degrees to one another or do they need to be kept close to one another as pictured in the paper work that comes with the antenna?

Zippi,
Actually, the farther apart they are the better off you'll be. That way they have better diversity and get better resolution of the signal being sent to it. The were close together here because my Kaos has a pretty narrow fuselage.

RCKen,

Thanks. Looks like TH has changed there stock status on the RDS8000 from in stock with limited quantities to just in stock. I'm hoping that tomorrow my order status goes from on back order to merchandise has been shipped.

Zippi,
I sure hope you get one. I've always been an Airtronics guy, but I LOVE this radio. They really hit a homerun with this one. Now all I need to do is start buying receivers!!!

I've used Airtronics for about 20 years and can't say enough about them. The only thing I can see that the RDS8000 lacks it dual rates on the rudder.

I did note that same thing in my review as well. I read elsewhere in this thread that there is a way to get dual rates on the rudder by slaving an aux channel to the rudder, but I haven't tried it myself yet so I can't speak on it.
