Thanks for the buddy box info. Just ordered the VG400 trainer box from Hobby People. Said it came with a cord, but didn't show the cord number. Assuming it's the new one. $36.99 is great price for a box and cord...

Thanks for the help !!

The trainer box has a built-in cord. It plugs into your radio, no problem.

It's a nice box because it also has some adjustment of its own.

Hey All, I have not posted in this forum in a while. I've been busy flying with my RDS 8000. I am using the RDS in 3 airplanes. A Dual Ace 46, a Tiger 60, and a Senior Telemaster. As I said in earlier posts, I replaced a Futaba 6XAS with the RDS, and I can say that I LOVE MY RDS!!!!
As for twin engine operation, I tried to use different channels on my Dual Ace. I could never quite get the engines matched. So I just went back to doing it the old and reliable way of using a y harness. It takes much ground time and many flights to get every thing set but once it's there, it works great. As for the other mixes, they appear to work great. Specifically I use the Flaperon mix, Elevator to flap mix, Aileron Differential, Dual Elevator and of course I use throttle cut. All work great. The dual elevator mode makes dual servos a snap.
For those who fly Multi engine birds or HEAVY Warbirds that require you to use the throttles to control you rate of descent during final will probably frown when you discover that the throttle channel does not have expo. However, by moving the CENTER function up (+%) you can soften the bottom response for a expo feel. Seems to work good. The program navigation for the RDS is definitely different than that of Futaba. But it is easy to get use to, and once you start using it it makes since. One example, ( but there are many) is on the Futaba, dual aileron servos use ch 1 and 6. You use the both channels ATV to set differential. On the RDS you use ch 2 & 6. to program diff, you go to channel 2 under AL-DIF and you can adjust from -100 to +100%. This effects both channels. If you think about it, ,,,,,,,,makes since, huh? This is only one example. There are a few. All in All this is a great radio and I HIGHLY recommend it.

I agree, its a great radio. As far as mixing goes, I mixed the rudder with channel 7 on the nose wheel. It works ok, but the switch is still active, so if the switch is in the wrong position, the airplane makes a sharp left turn. I need a way to disable the switch.

I know in some of the more usual mixing modes the switch is automatically disable, but not in this mode.

Ethan

PS I hope my spelling is ok

The 10 channel will have expandable memory. There's other things going on with the memory, model switching, etc. too. But, we're way ahead of ourselves here.

You'll start seeing more about the radio later this year. Remember, it's an 09 release, not an 08!

SWITCH DISABLE: You can actually physically remove the chrome lever! The switch will still be there but the chrome lever will come off of the switch (gently pull on the switch, the slightest of wiggles, and then you should feel it start to move.. then simply pull it off!)

No rewiring, etc... And if you want to use the switch for other models, just slide the lever back onto the switch.

Mike

Mike, the removable switch idea is great, tell the engineers to make a little compartment in the radio to house the switches, I'll loose them.

Hey Ethan, I have an airplane that could use less sensitivity on the nose wheel. Perhaps I'll do some playing around with the mixes...
Then I saw Mikes post about removing the switch arm. Good idea, but I am reluctant to remove it though. I'm confident I'll lose it.. I'll let yo know what I figure out with the mix.... Skip D

Regarding...

I started flying RC when programmable radios were something only a handful of sponsored competition fliers or rich dudes owned, so I learned how to use basic geometry to get "expo" response from a linear input. Just putting the control horn on the servo a bit off of center, or using a bent control horn can give you a nice curve in your throttle response.

That said, lack of expo and dual rates on all channels is pretty much the main reason I might have to *not* buy the airtronics, and go for something more expensive. I think I'll end up with the airtronics and then spend more time with the physical setup as I always have, but it would be nice to be able to position the control arms and actuator geometry for convenience and strength, then use the radio to program in the right response curves. It probably takes about the same amount of time to do it right the first time (either with actuator geometry or programmable radio) but a programmable radio lets you change the curves without taking everything apart which can be challenging especially with tight or cowled engine installations.

Thanks for the tip on disabling the switch. Works great. I found I could store the plastic lever in the battery box at the bottom of the battery between the two small pices of foam.

Hey flensr , I have been flying a while myself. Since 81ish or 82ish?? You definately hit the nail on the head when you said a programmable radio lets you change or fine tune your setup. Matter of fact, I generally offset the horns on my aileron servos to get differential mechanically.
