Do want to know what I really like about it (and I don't have it yet)? The screen is at the top of the case!!!
I will be the first of about 50 guys at our field to have Airtronics anything. And, this will be my first 2.4 TX. I will put the receivers in my SPA Intruder pattern plane, and my Kyosho Edge 540. Think that might shake 'em up good?

Well, I got off of my wallet and ordered the RDS 8000 with 2 receivers from OmniModels...$204.99.
It would be nice if Airtronics would throw in a ''T'' shirt I could wear to the field! I will be the only one there not holding a Futaba or a JR/Spektrum.

I know the feeling!! but I have ordered the SD10-G now and looking forward to seeing their faces once I get it installed

I now have 15 flights with my new RDS 8000. Ease of setup is a big plus here. I was a little worried about the ratchetless throttle, but about 3 feet into my first taxi that worry was long gone. The battery likes to stay at 10.4 volts and I am satisfied with that. I am glad I waited to jump on the 2.4 wagon. My only problem is fingerprints from the guys at the field checking it out!
OK, Mike. How about that "T" shirt?

If I am going to wear something that advertises a brand name, it has to be free.

I was under 3 min. into my first flight today and the screen became completely black/illegible from exposure to sunlight. Did anyone ever find a fix to this?

I'll also echo the props to Airtronics for making this radio so incredibly easy to figure out programming-wise. They have all but eliminated Futaba from my vocabulary

All (most?)the LCD screens black out when exposed directly to sunlight. I keep my transmitter in the shade or cover with a towel. My JR transmitters do the same, but not as bad. Just be aware that is what happens and turn transmitter away from the sun or cover. This is only temporary and will return to normal when out of the direct sunlight after a little while

Mine is really, really bad. Like I said, under 3 minutes into the first flight and the screen was totally black. Completely useless while flying, and I am very good about keeping my radio out of the sun and heat. I understand this happens to a degree with all radios, but I had it looked at by other guys at the field who all agreed that something is not right.

Since I don;t fly with my reading glasses on, I can;t see the screen while flying anyway...haha. There may be an adjustment in screen intensity, which if cranked down may make it less resistant to the blackout. But I do know that if I leave mine uncovered, it turns unreadable also. If you get anything from Airtronics, let us all know

Thanks

bob

I just returned from a contest and my new RDS 8000 was "out" in the 90°+ heat for 12 hours. I was careful to keep it shaded and experienced no hint of blackout. I would be very interested to hear if Airtronics has something to say about the screens. I really do not want to send mine back-I just got it and it is great- but I guess to head off a problem I would do it.

So it is mine. The LCD has no contrast adjustment. I keep my radio in the shade all the time I am not flying, but as the day gets hotter, it only takes a few minutes for the screen to become unreadable. Don't get me wrong, I love this radio. When it comes to programming, features, and price, it is really hard to beat. But the LCD, along with the cheap battery pack that comes with the radio may be its weakest points. Some people say all LCDs do the same, but I have an Optic 6 which I have used for a few years in the same weather conditions and has never blacked out. Even my old RD6000 has never been this bad.

Any new changes for the RDS8000 in future? I have one but wished there was a newer version with more model memory , longer model names, expo on rudder. I don't need the 10 channel.

I think for longer model names Airtronics would have to change the screen!!!
You know, someone could get a model name confused with a program and crash or hurt a bystander, or themself!

Picture #1 shows the infamous black monster that covers my rds8000's LCD after only a few minutes of direct exposure to the sun. Picture #2 shows the screen almost back to normal about 30 seconds of shade cover. The last 2 pictures clearly show that my old rd6000 is not affected the same way, even though both transmitters have similar displays. I flew with the 8000 first for 9 minutes and about halfway through the flight the LCD turned completely black while the 6000 which I also exposed to direct sunlight for 9 minutes remained clear. Some people say this happens to all LCD's but this proves it does not. I also own an Optic 6 that has never turned black.

That's exactly what mine looks like. Really screws me up when I'm trying to monitor my flight times.

Yeah!!!!!!!!! Finally i'm a member of the RDS team. I bought two RDS8000's on friday! One for my son and one for me. HobbyPeople had them on sale for 149.99. Not the best deal i've seen but still pretty darn good. There are already 5 others at my field that have this radio, so now that makes 7! My son installed it in his RC car just to play with right now! He could not wait.

I noticed in the box a sheet of stickers with all sorts of Airtronics logos. Would be great if they included an iron-on transfer to put on my own shirt. That could be a cheap way to get more advertisement. Listen up Mike!
