Has anybody started on the top flite B-25 yet? Mine is going into the backroom until I can afford to get the rest of the parts (i.e Landing gear, engines, radio, etc.)

dwr,

Keep us posted on what you come up with for the exhaust. Trying to stuff a G-26 in a .60 size cowl without the exhaust sticking out is going to be tuff.

Hello Warbird Man, the Bisson mufflers came in and it looks like they will work fine. The muffler sits in the same position as the stock unit but most
of it rises above the center line of the crank. All that is needed is to modify the bottom corner to clear the cowl radius. No problem with an aluminum muffler. Thought I might also have a clearance problem at the top outside corner but not so. The modified muffler volume will be about the same as the stock unit. I'll post a pic when the mod is done. DWR.

Hey shanksow, I'm doing the same as you but did you look at your kit thouroughly before putting it away? I've had my kit about a week now and finally got to look at it piece by piece. I found my nose compartment canopy is all cracked. I'll be contacting product support for a replacement. Just giving you a heads up. Also are your canopies nice and clear or do they have a milkiness or haze to them? Just wondering.

I think all of my clear parts were a-ok. But I'll double check them now. thanks for the tip.

EDIT: (11/27/07) - check clear plastic parts in my kit and they are A-OK.

TT, I am doing the C model with the aft top turret and no large side windows. I believe that was the version the 345th BG first went operational with in New Guinea. It is interesting that they no more than got there before they were sent back to Townsville for modification as strafers. They were set up with four 50's in the nose and a twin pack on each side for a total of eight fixed forward. I like this version as it retained the original nose profile. They just painted over the plexiglas according to the Squadron Signal book. One of the fun things about this hobby is finding out all this history. DWR.

Check this video out on youtube. The last few minutes includes footage from the Movie Catch 22. The mass takeoff is the real thing. Something like 20 airworthy 25's were assembled in Mexico to shoot the movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PoU1R4BeS0

Yes, and he dragged most of those airplanes home on weekends with the help of his kids and friends. Air and Space mag ran an article about it written by his son. There is also some pages about it in the book"Hunting Warbirds" by Carl Hoffman. That book is a must read for aviation junkies.

Took a run up to Fantasy of Flight near Orlando and took a close look at Mr. Week's great B25. I was interested in seeing the rivet detail. In general, flush rivets are used from the nose to the main spar of the wings, then standard rivets aft of the spar. This was the case on the bottom of the fuse and wings also. The forward half of the bombay door skins were flush, the aft rivets were standard.

Fantasy of flight is a great museum, many of the aircraft are airworthy and the owner, Kermit Weeks, has flown all of them from the 5000 ft. grass strip right next to the museum. Every day about 1:30 PM they do a demo flight of one of planes in the collection. Yesterday they flew a Fiestler Storch. You can also get quite close to most of the aircraft on display.

Doug, that is actually the business end of the flexible 50 cal. in the nose.
Reminds me of that Dirty Harry scene except he would have to say "Well
I think I ran the whole nine yards through this thing, dont know if there is one left in the chamber or not, so tell me buddy, do ya feel lucky, well do ya"?

Question - Was the section of cockpit glass that we see tinted green on some of todays restored B-25s standard in World War II? Best I can tell from the black and white photos that is was on some and not others. Perhaps with only the B-25Js? Anyone know the story about this?
I am painting a Ziroli B-25 and am curious if this is something I need to do on this bird. It is a B-25J with the Air Apaches in the South Pacific. The actual aircraft depicted is Miss B Haven. Any info would be appreciated!

Don I started putting the TF B25 together at the end of November. I had a KMP b25 that flew great till it ran out of fuel going slow and low. Out of the KMP I am using my Robart mains w/1/2" struts, my satio 82s w/ on board glow, I am adding Twin Sync to my engings to detect a enging out problem $145.00. I orderer a new robart 100deg. nose gear. The build is going great TF has done a great job. It is much more to scale than my KMP was. The gear doors take a little time to get right. I like the fact that I can keep the fuse and the inter wings all together no major wires or lines to hook up at the field, just slip the outer wing panells on and fly. I have around 35 hrs in it with about 30 more to go. Plan to maiden it first of april. Enjoy your B25 they are a great warbird to fly. Ron

Gidday All

Here are some pics of "Hawg Mouth" which is currently on display in Darwin Australia. I've never seen pics from this angle before with one undercarriage door removed showing the workings of the gear mount and door operating mechanism.

There appears to be one central rod with an arm coming off it which attaches to the extended ends of the door hinges. Am I seeing this right and how does this one rod open both doors? The front end of the rod appears to attach to the leg itself thru a number of swivel joints. Is this central rod operated by the movement of the gear leg? How is the sequencing of the doors to close after the leg has moved accomplished?

I'm currently working on this part of my 85% build of the Ziroli 101". Would be great to get some of this working detail into the model if possible.

Richard

Hello Bundy, all that gear linkage is a real mind bender. I plan to use a sequencing air valve on my Ziroli that opens and closes the doors at both gear up and gear down actions. A small actuating cylinder is needed on each door. The control vavle is an Ultra Precision U.P.2.. I have already set up the nose gear and tested it and it works great. You end up with only one air valve body and one servo to actuate the entire system. No separate sequencing devices needed. Their web site is http://www.up-1.com/products.html

Hi DWR

Yep I know the UP2 well using it on my first two 101" Ziroli Mitchells.

It basically does the job but I found 2 problems with the method. First is over time with so many cylinders - 8 in all - if something binds up or got slow I would have legs crashing into closed doors when things got out of sync. Maybe preventable with more maintenance but I hate too much of that!.

Second problem was using standard 1" cylinders to operate the doors. In flight they just couldn't hold the doors shut all the time especially when dropping the gear to land. When the wheel comes down and the sub door opens, the standard 1" cylinder didn't have the grunt to hold the doors shut against the airflow. Again fixable with better geometry or heavier cylinders.

My answer on this 84" version of the Ziroli I'm building is to use a servo for the gear doors , air for the retracts and go to electronic sequencing. Still unproven but I like it so far.

I've also starting building my next 101" B-25. It will be a fully composite job with work progressing on super detailing the plugs. For this one I'm building my own screw jack undercarriage with interlocking sensor switches to hopefully minimize the above problems.

If I can understand how the full size works it might be possible to use some of the ideas in the model but from these pics I can't quite see how they do it. Can anyone explain it?

Richard

Here are some pics of the test mule (old Spacewalker) set up I used for the G26's to be used in the B25. I wanted to see how the glass cowls with dummy engines and modified muffler would work in the air. The G26's required a hole to be cut in the cowl for the carb and I also wanted to test how a fairing over the carb would work in flight. The muffler is a Bisson 07124. The G26's work great in this set up. It's nice to know these engines are broken in and tweaked before they go in the B25. The prop is a 16/8 Graupner that turns 7500 RPM. Performance is great. I should add that the mufflers needed to be modified by making angle cut at the bottom and welding on a flat plate.

I wanted to share the detail work I have done thus far on my Dad's Ziroli 101" B-25. The pilots I carved and painted myself. I just couldn't find any that were suitable or realistic. I used a photograph pasted behind the pilots to simulate a fully detailed interior fuselage. Pretty easy way to add detail where there isn't room for any. Thanks for the links that you guys have put up, they have been very helpful with this project!

We have flown this in the primer stage and it flies just as you think it should. Powered by to Zenoah G-26s.
