In the Drug store, ask for quantity like one gallon - it would be the best price, in range of 15 Euro per gallong
or better visit some factories where they make some products out of it - then price is about 4x lower;
For type of products and factories you can check this:

A good racing castor will have additives to reduce ash and varnish. Check a motorcycle shop. That is where they are commonly available in the US. Castrol M is not available here.

I've been using Castrol M for about 50 years and I can tell you it's good stuff!! And it should be too because Castrol started making it 100 years ago in England. Even their name comes from castor oil. I get it for $8 a litre which is a bit over 3GBP.

the pope -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (9/20/2007 10:07:29 AM)

Hey downunder , where do you get your castor from? From memory the place I get my methonal and nitro from (Scothers at Wingfield) was selling castrol castor for about $55 for 4.5 litres. I have been buying castor from a model shop buy the litre but this caster has additives to protect against varnish etc. Do you know what these are and are they any better than using just straight castor? cheers the pope

downunder -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (9/20/2007 3:10:38 PM)

Hey pope,
I get my castor from a guy in our club (Holdfast) who mixes fuel for ModelFlight and gets it in bulk. Scotchers has very good prices for methanol but if you know where the Noarlunga field is (turn left at the first set of lights when you get on South Road from the Vic Harbor road) then there's a Caltex fuel depot a few hundred metres along Seaford Rd (8386 1055). They've always had Castrol M there too but the price tends to vary a bit. Anyway, it might save you a trip right across town :).

I'd be wary of any castor that's supposed to cut down varnish because that's its last ditch protection against lean runs.

Good point about the protection part.

Thanks for the info Downunder I know where you are talking about as I used to live in the area ( Morphett Vale ) I will call in and see about the caster next time I am in town. I have stopped in at holdfast once to have a look but I havent been to Noarlunga yet for a look. From what ive been told its a pretty pokey place to fly. Maybe Iam just spoiled by the wide open space of Strath. Do you ever come done and fly at strath ? Thanks again for the info. Cheers the pope

downunder -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (9/22/2007 4:16:25 PM)

Yep, Noarlunga is pretty pokey to fly from and you have to be careful of the full size strip and hangars close by. The best thing about it is all the roos that gather in the field alongside in the evenings....the worst thing is the calling cards the roos leave on the flight line each night :).

But an update on methanol from that depot near the field. My son got some the other day and it was $50 for 20 litres so you're better off going the extra distance to Scotchers.

Will it mix with kerosene without the need for ether?

the pope -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (9/24/2007 10:29:26 AM)

Hey downunder the price for the methanol does seem pretty pricey, I paid $63 for 2 litres of nitro and $14 litres of methanol and from memory the nitro was $20 p/l. As for the kangaroos I bet they bugger off when you bring out the barb-e-que.[:-] Cheers the pope.

the pope -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (9/25/2007 7:41:53 AM)

Holy crap, downunder I just rang to see if the fuel depot had any castor and was quoted $83 bucks for a can of castor. After picking myself off the floor I`ve decided to go electric ( just kidding) now if any body knows where I can get castor anywhere in the Adelaide area reasonably cheap I would love to know. Cheers the pope

downunder -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (9/25/2007 2:22:39 PM)

I gather that's $83 for 5 litres? Phew! I'll check my local supplier and see if it's still $40 for 5 litres...I need some anyway :).

AMB -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (9/25/2007 11:12:33 PM)

Downunder you guys will have to Potty train the roos , hi from wet Florida martin

the pope -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (9/26/2007 6:54:10 AM)

Howdy Dan, with the price of castor oil I wont be feeding them castor thats for sure.Imagine trying to pick that mess up[:-] Cheers the pope.

holy moley -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (11/17/2007 4:42:22 AM)

Just thought I would post a note about using Castor Oil in RC airplane engines. I purchased a used Thunder Tiger .61 GP engine and was having one heck of a time getting it to run smoothly. The motor looked like new so I guessed it was still tight and not broken in as it was very hard to turn on compression stroke. Even the electric starter would hardly turn it over. Out of desperation I purchased pure Castor Oil in the 2 oz. bottle for $3.75 (Yikes) at our local drug store and added it to a new gallon of Omega 15% nitro fuel. The fuel states castor/synithic mix but the castor oil percent was lower than the manufacture recommendations. Boys, you sould see that engine run now! It took a few turns to get the fuel into the carburetor but it made all the difference in the world! The temp. outside was 75 Degrees so it was not a very hot day. I ran that engine for the full gallon and no trouble.

I switched back to the normal Omega 10% nitro and you guessed it, ran ok for short time and than trouble. Engine would not run smooth so another trip to the drug store (they are getting rich on Castor Oil sales) and now she runs like a dream. I have six 2 stroke engine planes and two 4 stroke planes, all in the .61 to .91 size class and never encountered a problem like this. I'm running 2 oz. castor oil in every gallon of 2 stroke fuel both 10% & 15% nitro. I have not tried it in the four strokes yet but I hear that the lower RPM and ringed pistons of four strokes don't require as much castor oil.
I still will run 18% oil (castor/syn) in my four strokes. I found that you can buy 16 oz. of castor oil for the price of 4 oz. (at my drug store) at Tower Hobbies[>:].

Anybody want to buy some Castor Oil company stock? hee hee [;)]

blw -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (11/17/2007 4:52:47 PM)

I add 2 oz to my Omega 15% for all of my engines.

downunder -> RE: Castor oil, castrol M (11/18/2007 3:38:14 AM)

When I first started reading forums like this it took me maybe a year to figure out that 15% fuel wasn't referring to how much oil was in the fuel. It took me much longer to figure out that an ounce of oil added didn't mean you weighed it. That's what happens in countries where nitro isn't used all that much and an ounce is added to balance a model :D.
