Scoubidou -> 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (8/27/2007 11:46:07 PM)

Hello
After many years flying ARFs, i decided to build my first Carden kit.

I am going to use that plane to fly IMAC intermediate in 2008 and my goal is getting 27.-27.5 lbs dry with DA-100 with tuned pipes.

The MTW RE-2 pipes are new on the market but DA tested them for a while and MTW is on 7th generation before releasing them on the market. They suppose to give the same power boost but better midrange than KS-1060 pipes. We will see but my first impressiojn is good and they weight the same of TD 75 canisters at 250g

Let me know if someone interrested to see another buiding thread or has some good ideas to help me...
Daniel

good deal

Scoubidou -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (8/28/2007 2:25:13 AM)

Hi Krazy
I have to buy a scroll saw this week to reduce weight in the engine box[>:].

Thanks to Caroline for the goodies. She put a prop cover and a Carden hat in the box[:D]

yeah one day i may have a carden to, u r on your way!

Scoubidou -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (8/28/2007 12:29:59 PM)

I have never flown a Carden but there is a reason why 80% IMAC pilots in Advance/unlimited fly Carden.[;)]

Daniel,

Good luck and we anxiously await your Build. When built straight, nothing Flys better then the Carden's, IMHO.

It's amazing to see all plywood plate are written by Denis's hand!
I hope i have not been too agressive on the scroll saw. I removed 12.5 oz from the motor box and side formers. I thought that Carden kits were more difficult to build than that.
The plan are clear and there is lot of room for personnal mods.

The landing gear weights 18 oz and Graphteck makes one at 9.3 oz for 60$. This could save about 1/2 lbs on the gear only.
More pics to come.

Daniel

Motor box completed and built square![;)]

Keep up the good work Daniel, Caroline is shipping mine in the morning[:D]

This is my 3rd Carden[:)]..My original is still flying at 4 years old and looks better than any new ARF on the market[;)]Actually still a Carden back from 1994-95 still flyable around here...I actually built it also from their original kits.[8D]

Sure like the report of those new pipes, i just may have to do that myself..[;)]

Hi Jack
Do you remember what kind of screws did you use to attach the wings to the fuse? I would like to use nylon 1/4 screws with blind nuts. Any concerns?

Daniel

wingburner -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/11/2007 2:09:22 PM)

Daniel, I have always used 8-32 bolts as suggested in the plans....But I have a 42% that uses 2 nylon bolts to hold each wing panel on and it has not caused any problems in 2 years..

I'm with you and the nylon bolts and blind nuts this time.[;)]

Very nice...Nothin holding you back[:D]

Mine hasn't been started yet..

Scoubidou -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/27/2007 2:44:03 AM)

Hey Jack
Have you already tried the Elmer carpenter glue? That's what i used for 3/8'' square balsa stick on the fuse and epoxy for the plywood. Is Elmer yellow glue enough strong? I like it because it does not smell like CA...

wingburner -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/27/2007 6:31:05 PM)

Daniel, I used in on my Dalton and it's been flying 2 years no problem.

RobT -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/29/2007 2:02:45 AM)

Scoub,

There was an article in Woodworking Magazine a couple of months back that did a glue shootout. Yellow glue came in 2nd in strength only to epoxy, and it was 99% as strong as epoxy. Stay away from the Gorilla Glue they are only around 65-70% the strength of epoxy.

wingburner -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/29/2007 2:06:48 AM)

Good info[8D] ..thnx

Scoubidou -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/29/2007 2:44:13 AM)

Thanks
I am sheeting the wings now and I plan to use 3 different types of glue for the plane:
1) Epoxy for plywood
2) Yellow carpenter glue for balsa
3) probong polyruethane for the foam.

It's a real pleasure to build that kit.

Kaos1964 -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/29/2007 4:41:21 AM)

Be careful with that probong - might end up with crooked wings. [:D]

Sounds like you've made good choices - enjoy!

RobT -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/29/2007 11:47:57 AM)

Woodworking Magazine is worth flipping though next time you are on the check out line at Homedepot!

as722 -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/29/2007 1:59:25 PM)

Scoubidou,

How are you planning on setting the wing incidence ? Reason I ask is because I saw on one of your pictures the wing bolt hold down plates already glued to the fuse sides, these are suppose to be glued later when setting the incidence.

Albert

Scoubidou -> RE: 35% Extra 260 on tuned pipes thread (9/29/2007 6:21:02 PM)

Good point Albert! Unfortunately, I have beed disturbed by my 2.5 years old daughter when i was building the fuse[:o] I glued the wing bolts plates right in the middle as per the drawing. It should be fine and i am going to add another wing bolt plate for a dowell and this one will set the incidence[>:]. If you look careffully the pics, you'll see another mistake. I glued the right side of the fuse on the left. The diagonal 3/8 thruss are opposite to the plan.
I am learning...[:D]
