Plan to build an electric demon using extra motor and esc from an electristar RTF. No official specs on the motor but I've been running it at 35 amps and 16-18v in the electristar with no problems and a 13x6.5 prop. Batteries will be a 5-cell A123 pack (16.5v) and about 13oz. For the demon I'm going to try a 10x7, 11x7, 12x6, and the 13x6.5 if it will fit. I already have all this in my dealings with the electristar. Do you think this would fly the demon with authority?

Would like to hear about your electric demon setups.

A6Ordie is exactly right. It's been done before and lately by a few guys including myself. My specs are over on spadworld, but I'm far from happy with the setup yet. I'll continue to post if I ever get this thing right.

Thanks guys, didn't know about spadworld.

I updated the saga of my e-demon over at Spadworld. It's in need of a lot of adjustment, but at least it's flying.

Thanks, I just got the materials today from a guy at the club and will probably start on it tomorrow. I was thinking to velcro the batteries underneath the canadian gutter instead of trying to stuff them inside. If that would work, then it would be easy to set the cg moving the batteries around.

The e-demons that I know of over on SPADWORLD have coroplast fuselages. Going to a PVC fuse will add a whole bunch of weight, so be careful on that. For an electric setup I'd really suggest going with Coro.

Finished my e-demon, used original plans. Used 2 mil coroplast for all of the wing. Had some longer yardsticks made that extend to wing tips. Canadian gutter pipe for the fuse 30". Nylon bolts and nuts to mount the wing and homemade aluminum landing gear. Three inch wheels. Mounted motor using plastic cutterboard two pieces thick with screws in the side and epoxy.

Electric motor: C-42 brushless from an Electristar .40 size trainer I had, similar to rimfire 42-50-600
Speed control: Electrifly SS45D
Batteries: 5-cell A123
Prop: 10x7 APC-E
Power: 21 amps drawn at around 15.5 to 16 volts under load
Average flight time: 6 min maybe 7
Weight: a little less than the glow version by side-by-side comparison

Flys great, plenty of power, amazed all the folks at the club, especially the guy with his glow demon.

Notes, speed control mounted on bottom of gutter pipe underneath the radio access hole with battery lead running to inside the fuse. Before final assembly it was severly tail heavy and had to rearrange the battery cells to get it to balance. My pack has four cells in a row with one doubled up at one end and pushed all the way to the front inside the fuse. Had to shift wing back half an inch and mount landing gear in original place to balance. Receiver battery mounted over CG. The nylon bolts hold well even after my first very rough landing. I will probably take this one to the field now instead of the trainer and let the trainer rest for a while.

Last minute thoughts, plan to keep components toward front of plane as much as possible, maybe even cut the radio access hole a little closer to the front.

Good going, congratulations on your success.

When you first asked about this, I thought you were building a scaled-down version like I did, so that's why I suggested staying away from PVC. Hope I didn't steer you in the wrong direction!

How about some pictures?

Here are some pictures of my e-demon. The 5 cell A123 gives me 6 minute flight times with a 15 minute recharge time. I have only flown it three times but it handled very well and very responsive. CG is 1/8th inch forward the leading spar. It's also very quiet, more quiet than my other electric planes. The PVC fuse and plastic wing don't resonate with the motor like balsa does. So what I get is only prop noise and a small turbine like sound.

Wow, that is pretty nice looking. I like the way you have the ESC mounted, good idea.

I know the sound you are talking about. My mini electric Demon makes a similar sound.

Very nice.
