The hanger9 Hellcat and corsair are excellent first warbirds. They both float like a ...........well, you know what. Good luck, you will love warbirds!

Generally speaking, the P-47 Thunderbolt and the Japanese Zero are good flying models. They have big wings, long tails and wide stance landing gear. The Top Flite Thunderbolt is a great flying plane if you want to build a kit. Many companies make ARF versions of the Thunderbolt (like Hanger-9).

I have the VQ Zero and its a great flying plane. Not super-scale but a good looking job. I have heard that all the VQ planes fly well.

Also, I have flown the Hanger-9 Mustang for a friend, and it flies very well too.

Of the ones I have flown here is what I would recommend for first warbirds:

H9 P-47 - You will need to change the landing gear wire. Also DO NOT over power it. I have a YS 110 and ripped the horizontal stab off on the 1st flight. It was actually the 2nd stab I had on it. THe first one cracked when the sheeting was scored to remove the covering when gluing. Now we have had our 3rd stab and ALL three are sheeted with the wood grain running parrallel to the fuse. This puts the grain paralell to the load and thats not good. We ended up rebuilding a stab from scratch and putting some carbon fiber on it.

CMP Corsair - YES a Corsair that flies like a 4-star. Wide gear and VERY little nose over tendency. Less then any other of my warbirds actually.
