Sorry to hear that Gizmo.  I'm glad you got it flying again, though.  ESC's are a touchy thing these days.  I'm flying the standard Castle ICE series (100) in my HeadHunter 550.  I'm using the stock Aligns in my 450 and 500 helicopters.  I've never had any problems with them.   On the other hand, my ICEHV 120 for my Furion 6 is in Kansas for the recall.  I don't really care that much for HobbyWings, but a lot people like them.  Boy, what a ramble of nothingness.   I have a Castle Phoenix 60 amp in my BH500.  Never had any problems with that one, either.

My esc's usually come down warm to cool.  My last flight of my Furion 6, the ESC I sent back to Kansas was outright cold.  I think you have a problem brewing with that ESC.  How's the gear mesh?  Current draw and all that can go up if the gear mesh isn't right.  Not that I'm saying yours isn't right, but it couldn't hurt to check.

Did I say it's great to be home?

Scott

hello  again guys I hope you are all well.

After a lot more thought and a little more research combined with the sentiment that this was given to me as a gift from my wife, I have decided not to give up on the little Blackhawk. You guys seem to rate them pretty highly as well.......

I am determined that it will be the next step in my learning and with a bit of help from you guys, this is actually a pretty good place to start.

Is there any chance that when I bound the radio to the rx I plugged a servo in to the wrong point? For example when I use the throttle control on the Tx the pitch on the blades changes. I assumed this to be right because when I throttle up it looks as though they are changing to simply add more lift?

Hmmm, somehow I missed the last few posts on here for some reason. Didn't show any new posts when I logged in.

Anyhow, David, you are correct. When you move the throttle stick up, the motor speed will increase depending on the throttle curve programmed in the TX, and the blade pitch will increase also. Unlike a fixed pitch helicopter, the blade pitch on a CP helicopter changes in relation to the throttle stick input. Motor speed and main rotor blade pitch are both controlled by the throttle stick. As far as binding with a servo plugged in the wrong place, it should make no difference. I generally bind a new receiver to my transmitter as soon as I get it with no servos or gyro plugged in to it. I just re-bind after I get the helicopter built and all the settings programmed into the radio to make sure all is well with the Spektrum "fail-safe".

Gizmo, I use a cheap HobbyWing 40A esc in my BH450 and it works great. I use the programming card to program it. It barely gets warm after a 5 min flight. Three of my Gaui helicopters have stock Gaui esc's, and two of my Gaui helicopters have stock Align esc's , and so far I have never had an issue with any of them. Can't offer any comment on other brands as I haven't used them. My stock esc in my BH450 worked great till the stock motor shorted out, and took the esc out with it.

Ok so I have been searching the web and have, like many not been able to find parts.
Can you please get me off to a bit of a start on the motor and esc I should look at using? What fits? Do they have have to be compatable amps etc?
For example can I just get a stock TREX 450 motor and esc?

I had a bit of a look back through this thread but could not find specifics.

Sorry if I have missed it.

Regards,

Brooka

The motor is a 3500kv motor.  An align motor should work great.  I would have no problem using an Align ESC with it, either.

Here's a site with parts... some are out of stock...

http://www.xheli.com/sppahe45.html

Gizmo has stated he doesn't like that company, but if you search for the part numbers of the parts you need, you can probably find alternatives.  Many of the parts used in 500 can be used in the 450, for example... head parts.  So there's another source.

I know you want to keep this helicopter because of sentimental value, but know that you're going to crash and parts support is going to be difficult.  I'm not even sure Helipro is in business anymore.  Now a bit of history... this helicopter is a rebrand with minor cosmetic changes of the Protech Zoom 425.  Their site is still up and the part numbers are the same as the Helipro parts.  They don't list any dealers, so I suspect they're out of business, too.

We'll help you all we can, though.  It's still a helicopter and the principles are pretty much the same across the board.

Scott

Hi again guys.
Hope you are all well?
Bit of an update followed by a question......

Started at the cheaper end of the potential issue and went to my local RC hobby store and bought myself the Trex 500. Halfway through a dry build at the moment and all is well.

As for the little Blackhawk.......the store had a Novatech 25a brushless ESC that they sold me cheap and I have just soldered all the connections and powered it up.
As per the instruction the speedy responded with a Do Re Mi to indicate that all is well with the forward and reverse on the trasmitter. After 4 sec you should either get a Da La which indicates that you are good to go or a DalaDal indicating the the esc is in "Brake activated' mode.
I dont get either......I get the Do Re Mi and the motor twitches for a milli second but then nothing.........

Any thoughts?

Oh also bought the Real Flight sim. Just awesome and I hope a real money saver in the long term

Dave

Sorry for the late reply, have not been on here much lately.
On the ESC, a 25A is likely too small as I think the Blackhawk comes with a 30A or 35A stock.

Also, are you certain that the Novatech esc is not made for a car or truck, instead of an aircraft. I am not 100% sure, but I think car esc's are programmed at center throttle stick, so you have forward and reverse motor directions. If so, it will not work in a helicopter. Might want to ask the guy you bought it from to be sure, as I have no knowledge about 4 wheeled RC vehicles.

If you'd like I'll sell you my whole copter, with replacement parts. I don't think I have a spare belt, but the belt I have on it is still in good working condition. It would be everything minus the servos (I upgraded to HS-65's and am going to keep those) plus whatever replacement parts I have. I'll post what I've got if you or anyone else is interested.

Edit: Mine is a SE (metal edition)

Edit 2: On second thought, I'd be willing to part with it with the HS-65's in place.
